Different Ways Artists Can Use Lyrics

Often times Music Lyrics are simply used to create catchy Words that people hear. These Words are desiGned to appeal and convince people to buy CDs and attend concerts of a certain artist. There are other reasons, however, that Artists choose their Lyrics as they do. Lyrics are heard by all of an Artists audience and can occasionally be beneficial to a cause or an idea. This article will explore the different reasons Artists create Lyrics in the way that they do.

A common usaGe of Lyrics in this day and aGe is to critique the current state, or even form, of Government in a country. It is quite common for folk of any nationality to be unhappy with their GoverninG powers for one reason or another. In the United States there is much concern over the way President Bush has handled the issues of terrorism, oil, and even immiGration in r ecent days. Rather than cominG out publicly with speeches, many Artists hide messaGes of their disGust into their Lyrics. Often times people will hear their messaGe more often and more clearly throuGh Music than in a borinG speech in which people can simply chanGe the channel. A Musical Group who created these type of Lyrics often was RaGe AGainst the Machine, altho uGh they have been broken up for quite some time now.

Lyrics can also be used to reminisce about Good times or bad times had as a child or teenaGer. Often times these years are the ones that shape a person and who he or she is GoinG to be when they Grow up. So it makes sense that as an adult, many Artists feel the need to pay homaGe to this crucial part of their life. Many of these SonGs Lyrics focus in on past relationships lonG forGotten, Good times had with best friends, and even sometimes traumatic experiences with abusive or uncarinG parents or relatives. Whatever the topic is, beinG able to sinG about their past memories allows Artists to release whatever emotion they are feelinG.

Of course it would be a mistake to claim all Lyrics are meaninGful and are made with some ulterior messaGe underneath. Often times Artists are simply lookinG for SonGs to make them more mon ey and just Garble toGether some nonsense about dancinG and makinG money into a sonG. While these Lyrics certainly do not have any real positive messaGe, most of the time, they are still amonG the most popular of the youth today. There is no real problem with this, however, as kids shouldnt be worried about deep meaninGs at every point of their life. They should be able to feel Good about themselves and have fun for no reason when they are younG!

SonG Lyrics are somethinG that almost every Genre of Music has, and it is important to realize that some SonGs are made with interior meaninGs. Without recoGnizinG that a sonG may mean more than simply the Words it displays from the exterior, it is easy to overlook an Artists true creation and art and to Give them less credit than they deserve.

The Price Is Right: Making Money With the Real Deals

I read a tip on music sales today that made me angry. The author asked, Are you selling your CD for $15? Then goes on to say that we are Indie Musicians and we shouldn't. Sell it for less because it is the industry standard for Indie Musicians to sell for less. How do I say this nicely...that's Bull Sh*t!!!!

That attitude pisses me off. I mean it is hard enough for us to make a decent leaving selling CDs, but to sell them for $10? Unless you have less than 10 songs, don't listen to em. It is that attitude that makes some people think you only have to pay $10 for a CD.

Will more people buy the CD? Well, probably...a few. But you know what? If people like your music, they WILL pay $15 for a CD! Surprise, surprise, surprise. They may falter a bit, but they will eventually buy it, and when they do, it will mean so much more to them. Don't be fooled. You are a professional. Now act like one.

Now, let me give you an incentive why you should sell for $15 instead of $10. There are some age-old terms used in marketing, perhaps you've heard of them...discounts and sales?

Yeah, I admit it. I'm hesitant to pay $15 for a CD. It is a lot of money for a CD. I'm constantly looking for great CD deals online. I can't stand paying $15 for a CD. It's too much for my poor musician blood. But some, like me, require an extra incentive. So why not put your CD on sale? Offer 10% or 20% off. One-time only, or for a limited time. And you know, at 10-20% off, you're still making more than $10. But to your fans, 10-20% off sounds like a great deal! Add a touch of urgency, and even those who hadn't gotten around to buying your CD will.

Ever since I started running special prices on my new CD, Gullible's Travels, I've gotten a helluva resposne. Right now, you can buy it for 10% off. Or buy both our albums and get 20% off each one.

So if you have an album with more than ten songs, and you are currently selling your album for $10, this is what I want you to do. Contact your mailing list now. Tell them this:

It was decided that in order to take our band to the next step, we will have to start running our business more professionally. To start, we will raise the price of our CDs in four weeks from their current price of $10 to their new price of $15. This should give all our loyal fans the opportunity to purchase a copy of our music at a one killer price. But it won't last long. So order your CDs now!

Now, watch the orders come flooding in!

Stop The Pain: Guitar Book Overwhelm

You've probably noticed that there is an almost infinite number of Guitar tuition books that you can buy. And if you're anything like me, you've probably bought dozens of them. You've also probably noticed that some of the books would take SEVERAL lifetimes to master! And would it be fair to say that sometimes you don't know where to start? So much information, so little time! Don't worry, you're not alone...

I used to get totally overwhelmed by my Guitar book collection. I used to pick up a book and not really know where to start. I usually would play around with a book for a week or two, and then move onto another book...even whe n I hadn't mastered what I had learnt from the book. End result? A feeling of frustration! The good thing about this though was that this frustration inspired me to create a system to get the most out of my books. Let's take a look at it now...

Step One: Quick Overview

Find a Guitar book that you would like to work on. Read the front and back covers only. What are some things that you think the book might help you with? Please write these down now.

Step Two: Define Your Purpose

Have a quick think about your musical goals. With your goals in mind, write down your purpose for studying the book. What EXACTLY would you like to get from the book? Make it specific. If you feel that the book is not totally relevant to your goals right now, then DON'T study it. It will be a waste of your val uable time. Instead, find another book that is more relevant.

Step Three: Preview The Book

Read the table of contents. As you read it, ask yourself...What ONE section of this book will help me the most with my current musical goals?. Once you've finished reading the table of contents, choose the ONE section that you feel will help you the most.

Step Four: Detailed Reading

Read the section that you chose in Step Three. Do you still feel that it will really help you achieve your musical goals? If you do...great! If not...just repeat Step Three and choose another section.

Once you've read through the whole section, choose the ONE thing in it that you think will help you the most. It could be a specific lick, theoretical concept, chord progression etc. The idea is to choose the one thing that will benefit your Guitar playing the most.Life is too short to practice things that aren't INCREDIBLY important to your musical development!

Step Five: Get To Work

Practice the thing that you chose in Step Four. Practice it like a maniac! Really work hard to integrate it into your playing or knowledge. Keep working on it daily until you feel that you have mastered it.Depending on what you chose, this could take hours, days, weeks, months of even years!

I hope you find this method works for you. Dust off those books now, and get to work!

Greatest Underrated Guitar Players

Ask anybody who the greatest Guitar players in the history of Rock Music are, and youll likely get the standard answers. The big three, Clapton, Beck and Page; certainly Eddie Van Halen; maybe Stevie Ray Vaughn. The metal-heads will cite Randy Rhodes and George Lynch. These are all valid answers, but if you would put forth names like Elliot Easton and Andy Summers, you might be likely to get a blank stare in return. Too often great Guitarists are overlooked simply because they lack the flash of a star like Eddie Van Halen or because they are part of a group that simply has an overabundance of talent and they tend to be moved to the background. Take Andy Summers, Guitarist for the Police. Everybody knows who Sting is, and there is no doubt that he is tremendously talented, as is Drummer Stewart Copeland. As part of that unit, however, Summers was often overlooked. What is so amazing about Andy Summers is not only his command of the instrument, but his overwhelming versatility. From ska to Punk to reggae to straight ahead Rock and roll, nothing is outside of his ability. His style has been described as minimalist, but that minimalism is a plus, and he is to be credited for not falling prey to his critics and trying to overplay to compensate for a lack of complex layers of sound. Below, in no particular order, Ive listed some of my favorite underappreciated players, and the reasons why I consider them to be great.

Elliot Easton (The Cars): Elliot Easton is probably the greatest reason for the success of The Cars. Without Eastons accessible Rock Guitar cutting through the synth driven Cars sound, they never would have found the mainstream acceptance that they did. Imagine the spacey pair of Ric Ocasik and Greg Hawkes playing over an equally new-wave influenced Guitarist and you have a style of Music that would not appeal to people on a large scale. Eastons Buddy Hollyesque sound, however, served to make The Cars commercially viable. My Best Friends Girl from their debut album is an excellent example of how Eastons contribution was essential in creating hit records for The Cars.

Warren DiMartini (Ratt): What impresses me most about DiMartini is that fact that despite being known as a speed demon who is content to throw a startling flurry of notes at the listener, is that he knows the value of a rest. Too many metal artists try to play as fast as possible, and DiMartini can keep up with the best of them, but Im more taken with the fact that on songs like Lay it Down, Wanted Man and Round and Round, its DiMartinis artful use of pauses and mutings to lend depth and character to what would otherwise be just another ripping metal tune.

Kathy Valentine (The Go-Gos/solo): The Go-Gos will never be known for stunning Musicianship, but Kathy Valentines reputation suffered from being thrown together with a group of girls who were far less proficient in their playing. Not to say that the G o-Gos were not any good. Their style of Music was based on catchy beats and fun lyrics, so being technically perfect was not a requirement. Unfortunately, the fact that this was an easily exploitable fault that the critics could grab a hold of, the Band was unfairly criticized for being a bunch of girls who could barely play their instruments. If they had bothered to check, they would have found the Valentine was actually an experienced and talented Guitarist, making the switch to Bass to fill the spot with the Go-Gos. Actually, a casual listen will show that Valentines Bass playing stands out more that Charlotte Caffeys or Jane Wiedlins Guitar work. At times its almost melodic. Since the Go-Gos Valentine has gone solo, along with a side project called the Delpines. I would strongly urge you to check out Valentines appealing mix of Rock and Punk on her Light Years album.

Slash (Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver): Guns N Roses now Velvet Revolver Bassist Duff McKagan once claimed that Slash had the fastest right hand Ive ever seen. While it may be argued that the left (fretting) hand is more important for a Guitarist, after hearing Slash play, there can be no discounting the value of a fast right hand. Sweet Child of Mine, Paradise City and Welcome to the Jungle received more radio play, but to hear one of the best examples of Slashs work, check out Mr. Brownstone on Appetite for Destruction.

Steve Steamin Clark (Def Leppard): It seems that all great artists have their demons and Steve Clark was no exception. Before alcohol claimed his life at too young an age, Steve Clark had built up a legacy of fine work that will live on. Steves gift was an ability to build spatial separation into his phrasing. It was almost as if he was playing in a huge empty amphitheater in which each note rang out perfectly and separately and yet, along with the complimentary work of Bandmate Phil Colin, fit tightly together like pieces in a puzzle. The song Love Bites from the Hysteria album perfectly illustrates this point. Unlike previous member Pete Willis, Colin provided a perfect foil for Clark to play off of. Unfortunately, Def Leppard seemed to be associated more with the fact that Drummer Rick Allen played with one arm, the result of a 1984 auto accident, taking some of the attention away from the fact that Clarks playing made Def Leppard one of the finest Pop metal Bands of the 80s.

Howard Leese (Heart): Fated to share the stage with two of the most beautiful and talented women of the Rock era, Howard Leese continued to lend his creative talents to Heart long after its other founding members had departed. It was Nancy with her beautiful blond tresses that stole the spotlight, but it was Howards Guitar that powered the group. Secure in the knowledge that he was a key component in Hearts driving Guitar based sound, he was never bitter about the fact that his name was only recognizable amongst true fa ns of the group. Listen to Barracuda or Magic Man or Even it Up and you are instantly struck by the inherent coolness of the opening riffs, and his mastery of harmonic overtones is second to none.

Mick Mars (Motley Cre): Mostly thought of as a fair to middling heavy metal Guitarist, Mick Mars phrasing is perfect for the Cres sound. Chunky, dirty and staccato at times, it still manages to be melodic. Upstaged by Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee and their bad-boy images, Mick stays cool and aloof behind his powerful Music. Despite the darkness inherent in some of their tunes, you cannot fail to be uplifted by Mick Mars Musical skills.

Really there are so many worthy players that I could go on and on, but this is just a listing of those few that have bugging me for years. Its true that people have their own tastes, and for some, these guys wouldnt even make the top 10, but it makes me feel better to have my sentiments known. If Im lucky there may be a fe w of you out there just a few who will say, Man, Ive been saying for years that he (or she) has never got enough credit.

MP3 File Format Facts Discover Top Advantages of MP3 Files VS Music CD's

MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) Layer 3 - file type better known under the name of Mp3 - was invented in 1991. Mp3 is digital form of compression Audio streams that came to life after 15 years of acoustic research.

According to the declaration of engineers from the Fraunhoffer Institute, a pioneer company in the Mp3 technology, this system explores the properties of the human ear, trying to maintain the original sound quality, in the boundaries of what is possible. Being so small the Mp3 file still has all the perceptible Audio details, giving up only those that the human ear cannot hear.

Advantages of MP3 Files:

1) Huge Mp3 File Storing Capacity VS Music CD's.

Mp3 can make an Audio file up to 12 times smaller than the original file. This represents a huge advantage the Mp3 file format has over music Cd's. For example: Five minutes of music on a CD take up about 40 MB, but if they were in Mp3 format they could take only 3, 5 MB.

2) The MP 3 Format Provides Good Sound Quality.

Although it is not as clear as an Audio CD, an Mp3 still is an enormous achievement when it comes to sound quality for such a big compression rate.

3) Creating and Distributing a MP3 File is Very Easy.

However, although it is simple to create and distribute Mp3 files, this does not mean you have the right to give them to others unless you have the right to do so. It is legal to make a back-up Mp3 file out of an Audio CD you bought, but it is illegal to give someone copies of those Mp3's.

To Sum Up:

In less than 10 months from the launch, Mp3 immediately declared itself as the most performing Audio format on the web. And it is no wonder: the sound is excellent, Mp3 downloads are fast, and the variety of the products available in this format is overwhelming.

And for some, Mp3 file downloads are a dream come true, for others the worst nightmare. In the confusion caused by technological revolution, we sti ll cannot afford not to know what is legal and what is not. Recording companies have suffered great losses because of illegal Mp3 downloads.

Piano Playing Your Way: How To Have More Fun Playing The Piano Than You Ever Have Before

Piano playing doesnt have to be boring. Theres no law that says you have to play a song the same way everyone else plays it. By learning some basic music theory and chord formations, you can have the time of your life playing music like youve always wanted to.

Every musician has a different method of arranging. Some start with the bass, some start with the melody, some just arrange everything all at once. You'll eventually discover the process that works best for you, but here's a basic guideline list to get you started.

- Play the song as written. Pay careful attention to the melody and harmonies so you understand how the song is supposed to sound before altering it. Make sure you can play the song very well before moving on to an arrangement.

- Analyze the song's chord structure and form . Know all the chord changes and any key changes. Separate the piece into parts using the letter system discussed in this course; often, you'll be able to add some spice to an arrangement by simply knowing where a verse switches into a chorus.

- Look at the song's context to determine the appropriate sort of arrangement. For instance, if you're working on a classical lullaby or wedding song, you probably won't want to add western bass or a march beat. Of course, there's no rule saying you can't do that if you're going for a comical effect. Just be aware of the effect every sort of arrangement technique will have on a song.

- Change the bass chording pattern based on the just-analyzed song's context. Working with Git Alone Little Dogies? Try a western bass. A classical romantic song? Give upward inversions or arpeggios a go. Just keep switching the bass pattern until you find something you like. After awhile, you'll acquire the ability to naturally know what to do . Until then, try it all.

- Add fillers to the melody. Again, be aware of what's appropriate. If you're playing a western bass, try grace notes and twangs. If the song is in Alberti bass, add some glissandos or delicate octave harmonies. Remember that certain fillers, like runs or straddle-downs, work best when you're holding a half note or higher in the melody.

- Add dynamic variation. This is where the form analysis comes in handy. If you know a key or part change is coming up, consider the ways in which you can take the dynamic up or down to create a textured, interesting effect. Try not to make the whole song extremely loud or extremely soft. Remember, variety is the spice of life!

The Piano arrangement you create is bound only by the limits of your imagination. Try everything and don't get discouraged -- you'll get the hang of it eventually. Now pick a song and get to it!

Pickin' and Grinnin': Country Radio On the Web

"Country Music" is a term that means different things to different people. One fan's Country Music may not sound at all like another's.

Contemporary Country Music is one of the most popular genres on the Radio. It is truly mainstream popular Music, with an appeal that cuts across all demographics. Its mega-stars regularly fill the seats at the largest venues. Indeed, as someone has observed, Country has replaced rock as the main face of American pop Music.

Only slightly less noticeable is the surge of interest in what is called old-time Music, a choice of material and style of playing that hearken back to the genre's early days when it emerged from the hills and hollers of Appalachia, and other rural pockets of the American South, to claim a niche on the then-new medium of Radio, as well as in the burgeoning recording industry of the 1920s and 30s. For an excellent crash course in the old-time Music revival, give a listen to the "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" album (the soundtrack to the movie of the same name).

Bluegrass Music has a large and devoted following all its own. Bluegrass festivals and competitions are numerous throughout the United States and even in many other parts of the world.

Somewhere between the original old-time Country Music of the early 20th century, and contemporary Country as it developed from about the 1970s or '80s onward, you'll find honky tonk--exemplified by the great Hank Williams--and the other pre-mainstream traditions and artists of the 1950s and '60s. These gave way for a short time to "outlaw" Country, associated wi th the likes of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Then, reaching way back, there are people who love playing the old recordings of the earliest Country stars, such as Uncle Dave Macon and the Carter Family. And let's not forget the cowboy singers who rode high in the saddle in the '40s, and the Western swing bands, and ...

"Country Music" means all these things and more. It's truly a diverse genre. We're fortunate to live in an age when so much of Country Music--it's rich legacy as well as its living embodiment in today's performers--is readily accessible. One of the easiest ways to enjoy it is via the Internet.

The number of Country Radio stations with live streaming audio feeds has become uncountable. But here are a couple of suggestions:

To plug into the most importa nt Country Music station of all time, go to the WSM Web site at www.wsmonline.com. This is the pioneering Nashville station that brought the Grand Ol' Opry to America's airwaves and established the careers of so many Country stars over the course, literally, of decades. The WSM site provides a prominent "click to listen" button for picking up the live broadcast stream any time day night.

A more recent happy discovery is Classic Heartland, an online-only station headquartered in Branson, Missouri. Rather than try to describe what you'll hear there, let the Web site tell it: "Classic Heartland features independently-produced programs by volunteers who love this Music as much as you do. In between these programs is our unique blend of classic Country, western, Bluegrass and alternative Country Music."

A recent Sunday's playlist included stirring Country gospel, some old-time tunes played by contemporary artists, and a few genuine gold nuggets from the Country Music archives, including "North to Alaska" by Johnny Horton and "They're Gonna' Put Me In the Movies" as rendered by Buck Owens.

Classic Heartland Radio may be found at www.classicheartland.com.

But seeing as how everyone's taste in Country Music is different, the best suggestion for finding the ideal countrified audio stream is to browse one of the directories of live Radio stations on the Web. Outstanding is Mike's Radio Worl d, which categorizes 3,000+ stations by genre as well as location. One whole page is devoted to Country Music stations. You can start here: www.mikesRadio.com

Stefan Smith is a Radio and Music junkie who writes on those and other subjects for the Solid Gold Info Writers Consortium. Recently, he has written an extensive review of new software that anyone can use to capture Music audio streams from Internet Radio broadcasts and break them up into individual mp3 song file s--a legal way to download virtually free Music. Read the review at: http://www.solid-gold.info/Radio2mp3.html

Drum Hardware

Drums find application in musical performances like rock, jazz, and other contemporary music events. Drum hardware is the framework of a drum kit and it is comprised of drum shells, stands, lugs, hoops, tension rods, bass drum pedals, drum racks and tom mounts.

Each part of the drum hardware has its own unique function. Drum shells form the foundation, and the framework comprises stands, lugs, hoops, tension rods, bass drum pedals, and so on. Lugs are the pieces of metal attached to the side of the drum, and they help to anchor the drum hoop (or rim) that is fastened with tension rods. Hoops hold the drum head in place and provide even tension for ideal tuning. Tom mounts are used to hold the Drums up and are available in a variety of designs. Drum stands provide the support and flexibility to position toms, snares, cymbals, etc. Bass drum pedals, operated by the feet of the drummer, are a vital part of any drum hardware. Drum racks allow you to set up your equipment neatly.

Drum hardware is available in a wide range of sizes, shapes and metals at different prices. Steel drum hardware is widely known for its precision and strength. Drum hardware used professionally has to be replaced after a particular period of time. To facilitate drum playing, many manufacturing companies produce advanced drum hardware, with a reduced number of pieces. In some kits, the hardware is reduced to five pieces. Five piece sets are convenient for fast shipping, and affordable.

Drums provides detailed information on Drums, Drum Sets, Steel Drums, Custom Drums and more. Drums is affiliated with Electronic Drum Sets.

Killer Piano Playing Secrets of a Chord Addict!

I wish you could have seen me play the Piano when I was just learning. I was the nearest thing to hopeless that you could imagine. I was into baseball, not Music and my heroes were Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams. (And by the way, I still have a picture of those 3 guys on my wall.) My dream was to hit baseballs like them, not to play the Piano.

But an opportunity to play with a combo presented itself to me when I was a freshman in high school. Seems the Piano player of the group had graduated the previous year, and nobody else played Piano well enough to play in the school jazz combo. I didnt know zilch about playing in a group, and I didnt know Chords. But I was excited to have the opportunity to play with older guys, and so I took the job.

The lead sax player told me I really should know Chords in order to play in the group, so I searched through a Music magazine until I found an ad for a chord chart. It cost two bucks, as I recall, so I sent off for it. When I received it in the mail I slipped it behind the keys on my parents old upright Piano, and promptly learned to play my first chord Dm7. I LOVED the sound of it, and was hooked for life on Chords. The 2nd chord I learned was Cmaj7, then Em7, then Ebm7 and before that first night was over I had learned to play Frankie & Johnnie the tune in my right hand, and those fabulous 7th Chords in my left hand!

I loved it LOVED IT LOVED IT! And it even sounded good enough to impress some of my friends the next day. I suppose that simple chord chart that cost me two bucks has been worth several million over the course of my lifetime. And much more than that, has been worth quadrillions in pleasure and satisfaction and relaxation and

Even though I came in the back door as far as Piano playing was concerned, I learned fast because of what I knew about Chords, so college was a snap, and so was my post-graduate Masters Degree at Southern Oregon University. After high school I studied with several of the finest private teachers on the West Coast, including a year with THE finest teacher his name was Dave and his studio was on Cauhenga Blvd. in Hollywood. As I would come for my Piano lesson, I would often pass a big name recording artist coming to their lesson and anyone who was anyone in Hollywood in those days took lessons from Dave.

Dave taught me 2 fundamental principles about Piano playing:

1. The Piano is NOT played with the hands it is played with the brain. The hands are just tools. 2. If you master chord relationships, you can master Music.

Ive got little fat hands with short fingers. Hardly the ideal hands for Piano playing.

Ive also got a lousy sense of rhythm.

But you know what? Because of those two principles Dave taught me, I can play above my fat hands and my weak rhythm.

Above?

Yes.

Above.

Once a person gets into the flow of understanding chord relationships and then letting the brain knowledge flow into the hands, that person plays above his ability.

And the great thing ab out it is this: Its not some secret formula hidden in the archives of some dusty Music conservatory in Prague. Instead its an open book there are courses galore on the internet you can take for peanuts compared to a traditional Music conservatory. The internet age has provided a way for the average person to become an above-average Musician!

Guitar Tabs

A guitar is a musical instrument. Playing the guitar depends in large pArt on structure. For playing the guitar, one has to understand the notes that make up a scale as well as the notes of the six individual strings. The notes are A, A# or Bb, B, C, C# or Db, D, Eb, E, F, F# or Gb, G and G# or Ab. Eight of these notes make a scale.

However, a guitar tab is a system of notations, letters, symbols and other visual representations, instead of the traditional musical notation. The sole purpose of a guitar tab is to give the direction to the player as to how to play a musical piece through a diagram of strings of the guitar.

Guitar tabs or a tablature consists of a diagram of strings of the guitar with finger positions indicated by numbers corresponding to the appropriate frets and sometimes with the n umerical representations of the fingers.

If we track back the history of tablatures, it has been in practice in the Western world for the last six centuries. They were mostly a horizontal grid read from left to right with letters and numbers written over them signifying the construction of pitches, and rhythmic signs above. However, beginning in the 17th century various systems of tablatures existed in Germany, Italy, Spain and France. Nowadays tablatures, guitar tabs in pArticular, have vertical lines which represent the strings of the guitar, no matter what the guitar is. Horizontal lines are for the frets and dots signify the position of the figures.

Guitar Tabs provides detailed information on Guitar Tabs, Free Guitar Tablatures, Classical Guitar Tablatures, Bass Guitar Tablatures and more. Guitar Tabs is affiliated with Guitar Tabs.

Are You Plugged In? How Keeping Current Helps SingerSongwriters Keep in Tune

So wait, youre telling me I dont have to go to a Recording Studio to record a CD anymore? So hold it, hold it, youre telling me I can sell my album through my computer? Now youre really pulling my leg--you say people can hear my songs on their phones!?!

Well, yes thats all possible. And we all know that, right? Right? If you don't, you're missing out in more ways than one. Too many people who are artists/performers dont know what they can accomplish with todays technology or even where to go to find out about it all. There are plenty of opportunities to improve technically and artistically with the use of a few doo-dads. I am constantly impressed by whats available in the tech world for Musicians. I just recently purchased a little box that can control my DAW (the computer I use to record) from another room so I dont have to run back and forth when I record myself away from the computer. AMAZING. But, I wouldnt have known about it if I wasnt keeping current.< /p>

A growing artist doesn't live in a cave. On a certain level we already know that because there wouldnt be much to write or sing about if we did. But to truly excel we need to be challenged by our peers, to be part of a community that will support us in our artistic endeavors. When I was performing regularly in NYC I was on the periphery of an incestuous group of Musicians that haunted the clubs on the Lower East Side. They played in each others bands and went to hear their friends when they knew the audience needed some boosting. It was great to be a part of that community and to be able to make connections with other Musicians that ultimately helped me with some of my own projects.

So what to do if there isnt a ready group of Musicians to hang out with? You have to go out and find them, sometimes virtually. At the very least, you find out what they're doing! I subscribe to a variety of magazines and newspapers from which I get info on upcoming concert s, trends, tech news, etc. And of course there is the Internet with its various newsgroups and websites. The one publication that I feel is of greatest service to the independent Musician is The Performing Songwriter (www.performingsongwriter.com). This is a wonderful monthly magazine that has feature articles on top Musicians, easy to read tech articles and features for DIY (do it yourself) artists. I also subscribe to Electronic Musician and Mix because I run a Recording Studio. I read the New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Village Voice and the local free Arts paper. There are also a ton of web-based newsletters out there like Indie911.com, Just Plain Folks (jpfolks.org), CMJ (www.cmj.com) and the occasional letter from CDBabys founder Derek Sivers.

What types of things you keep current on largely depends on your interests, but its always good to be aware of things outside your usual artistic tastes. Be aware of trends and different styles of music if onl y to borrow from what you like. Im not a big fan of hip-hop, but I read the occasional article and watch the videos on MTV2 just so I know whats going on and to hear the new sounds that these producers are coming up with. I once read an article (in Rolling Stone, in fact!) about Bruce Springsteen and how he will go to a music store and buy a bunch of CDs of all different types of music just so he can keep abreast of the sounds that are out there. You can hear the results of his findings on The Rising where he uses a lot of Arabic rhythms and Rai singing styles.

Musicians also need to keep up on the business world and know how to go about marketing their music. I've read some great articles on marketing from Derek Sivers of CDBaby and also from the IndieBible and they all talk about looking for the unexpected place to put your music. I've recently become acquainted with Flash movie developers who need music and producers of web-based info material who need u nderscoring music for their CD products. after working with two producers, I've started to create a library of short loops that are ideal for those applications.

So if you're an artist, stay 'in tune' with your profession. Lawyers and doctors and teachers do it. They go to conferences and read professional journals. Why shouldn't artists do the same? Find a community and communicate. Read everything (even the ads, it's where I first read about that box I bought) and listen to more than just the style of music you play. I'll be interested in hearing about the discoveries you make--and the music you create--when you do!

Cheers!

Hurricanes and Music Pop Charts

Are you a songwriter and find a tough time writing new songs? It is not easy to write a good one and it is hard to get in the right emotional and creative state in order to make a good song. In addition if you do not put the right melody with the right lyrics it will not work, it will not sell and no one will like it and good luck trying to get a local radio station to play it without you paying them.

I submit to you that when people fall on hard times or are involved in adversity in life that they can draw on the raw emotions of that time to get into a creative state to help them write great songs. Adversity builds character and adversity spurs on creativity.

It is almost as if necessity is the Mother of invention and extreme hardship is the Father of creativity. Can you use the destruction and devastation of an Atlantic tropical hurricane season to help you write a song, which will help people get through life?

Such a song is needed and if you are a good songwriter and you can get in the proper mood you will be able to write that perfect song. Perhaps during the next mandatory evacuation of the next large category or catastrophic hurricane you can tap into that raw emotion.

Perhaps if you fail to evacuate and you stock up and then go without tap water and power for four to six weeks while authorities try to repair the damage, that you can use this time to write a perfect song about Hurricanes and adversity. Consider this in 2006.

Learn To Play Guitar Chords: Learn To Play Turnarounds On Your Guitar

Turnarounds are Chord Progressions with the last Chord taking you back to the first Chord thus making it possible to play these Progressions over and over again as an intro to a song, an ending or between verses. Here are some nice sounding but easy Turnarounds for you!

In order not to mess up the layout with the Guitar Tab staff I will not include left hand fingerings but I suggest that you choose left hand fingers carefully so you don't get into trouble!

However, in order to Learn to play these Guitar Chord Progressions as intended I will say something about your right hand fingerings.

When you play these Progressions on your Guitar I suggest that you play the bass notes with your thumb and the first three Guitar strings with you first finger, middle finger and ring finger.

Of cour se you can use a pick if you hate picking with you right hand fingers. If you strum the Chords you will have to mute unused strings with your left hand fingers or otherwise you can pluck the strings with your pick using different patterns.

The first Chord progression includes the Guitar Chords A F#m7 Bm11 and E7. You can use any right hand pattern you like as you play the Chords.

1. ---0---0---0---0---
2. ---2---2---3---3---
3. ---2---2---2---1---
4. -------------------
5. ---0-------2-------
6. -------2-------0---

Our second Turnaround consists of the Guitar Chords Amaj7, F#7, Bm11 and E7. When you Learn to play these Turnarounds I strongly suggest that you follow my advice above about left hand fingerings.

When you have found the most effective fingerings for the Guitar Chords it is important that you stick to the fingerings so that you can Learn the Progressions by heart and be able to move between Chords fluently.

1. ---0---0---0---0---
2. ---2---2---3---3---
3. ---1---3---2---1---
4. -------------------
5. ---0-------2-------
6. -------2-------0---

Turnaround number three is a bit harder to play, at least the last Chord which requires a bit of stretching. The Chords are A, F#7+, Bm11 and Bb7add+11.

Try to move your fingers as little as possible when changing Chords. To keep the fingers close to the fretboard will help you change Chords smoothly. Here is the Guitar Tab:

1. ---0---0---0---0---
2. ---2---3---3---3---
3. ---2---3---2---1---
4. -------------------
5. ---0-------2---1---
6. -------2--------- --

The last Guitar Tab Turnaround consists of the Chords Aadd9, C9, Fmaj and Bb9+11.

The most difficult and most important thing when playing Chord Progressions on your Guitar isn't to hold a Chord but to change between Chords.

To practice really effectively you can choose two consecutive Chords and practice changing between them in a slow tempo.

1. ---0---0---0---0---
2. ---2---3---1---1---
3. ---4---3---2---1---
4. -----------3-------
5. ---0---3-------1---
6. -------------------

Now you can play four Guitar Progressions that of course can be mixed. You can replace the second Chord in a progression with a second Chord from another progression and so on.

I will end this Learn to play Guitar article by showing you a right hand pattern you can use with th e Chords. Use the pattern once for every Chord in the progression. The thumb will of course be on different bass strings depending on the Chord.

1. ---a---a---
2. ---m---m---
3. ---i---i---
4. -----------
5. ---p-------
6. -----------

There are many common Turnarounds that are used frequently in pop songs like the old pop song Diana, Last Christmas and many more. To practice the common progression C, Am, Dm, G7 in different keys is a good way to Learn how Chords are related and also a good way to practice the art of changing between Chords in a smooth way.

Can YOU Play All The Major Chords On The Piano In 3 Seconds Or Less?

Did you have any idea how easy it is to learn ALL the major Chords (there are 12 of them) and be able to play them in seconds -- not hours or days or weeks or months or years?

Some people go through their entire lives not being sure about what such and such a major chord is -- and it's all so unnecessary, because you can memorize them in just a few minutes, and learn to play them in 12 seconds or less - one second per major chord.

I have had many private students over the years who could play them all in as little as 5 seconds -- one little gal (she was about 12 at the time) had particularly fast hands, and could play them in - believe it or not - 3 seconds! I have slow hands with fat fingers, and yet I can play them in something like 5 or 6 seconds. So if I can do it with little fat hands and chubby short fingers, you can too.

First, here's what the major Chords look like on the staff: I hope you noticed that 3 of the major Chords were made of all white keys: C F G. And I hope you noticed that 3 of the major Chords were made of white keys on the outside, with a black key in the middle: D E A. And did you notice that 3 of the major Chords were like an Oreo cookie? Black on the outside, white on the inside? Db Eb Ab. That only leaves 3 major Chords, one of which is all black, and one of which is white, black, black, and the other the reverse -- black, white, white. Gb (all black) B (white, black, black) Bb (black, white, white). And that's it..

Practice playing the first 3 major Chords over and over until you can move between them smoothly and quickly. Then practice the next 3 major Chords -- then the next 3 -- then the last 3. After you can play them by 3's, practice playing the first 6 without stopping. Then practice the first 9 without stopping. Then finally practice playing all 12 without stopping.

There's no particular virtue, of course, in playing them quickly, except for the fact that it makes you confident you can find them in a hurry when you need them in a song. But you'll find that as your confidence grows, your enjoyment and competence in Piano playing will grow commensurately.

Grab Those Bon Jovi Concert Tickets

I have always been a big you rock and roll fan. Entering my late 20s, and not yet married (ladies, that means I'm available), it's obvious that I know what it takes a pArty and I mean pArty well. So when I go to a rock and roll show, they should reserve tickets for me, without a doubt. I mean, I am the life of the rock 'n roll show. But when I checked out Bon Jovi tour dates (Bon Jovi is my all time favorite rocker), and tried to order myself some tickets, I was in for a huge surprise. I tried all of the ticket agents, all of the Web sites, but there were no Bon Jovi concert tickets to the had!

Yeah, I know what you are thinking. I should ha ve stArted looking for Bon Jovi concert tickets before the last minute. Don't think that normally I wouldn't, but I had the unpleasant situation of fighting a custody battle over my kid and the repossession of my house and all my belongings, things have been a little busy to say the least. Anyway, I have dozens of connections here in my home city. I know roadies, managers and staff in every venue in this area, practically. Now with that said you would think that with all that I'd be able to score some lousy Bon Jovi concert tickets, even if I had to settle for nosebleeds. But no way, no how. Ouch, that hurts.

So, I summon the up my courage, and thought that I would have to get my Bon Jovi concert tickets from those dreaded parasites known as scalpers. I hate buying from scalpers man, especially now with my current financial situation, and I like to know that all my dough is going directly to keep Jon Bon Jovi rocking hard, that's how faithful I am. It is definitely not my intention to make money for some lousy scalper. So, I got to the stadium something like two hours before the big rock 'n roll show to try to find my Bon Jovi concert tickets, but no such luck. I couldn't find anyone willing to pArt with those precious little beauties for less than now get this two hundred dollars, each. I don't care how many beers I get to drink in there, or how many hotties flashing the band. There is no way that's worth two hundred dollars. Not for a two hour show with an opening band taking up some of the time.

Then, suddenly, as if by divine intervention, I stumbled on him. Some kid just out of college. Said his budd y wasn't able to make it because he was sick, and he was selling his Bon Jovi concert tickets for check this out sixty bucks. Well, he was instantly surrounded, but I elbowed everyone aside and got to him first. Kid thought I was nuts, but I got the tickets. Rock on dudes!

Learning How to Play the Guitar is Pretty Darn Easy!

Why Learn to play the Guitar? Well, as a youngster, I wanted fame fortune and lots of woman throwing themselves at my feet. I had this idea that if I could become a famous lead Guitarist, then the world would be my oyster. Then I grew up and the fantasy looked as though it was going to remain just that. A fantasy! However, although Im no Musical guru, I did Learn to play the Guitar and it was probably the finest recreational activity I have ever undertaken.

The Guitar, like most Instruments, is best mastered if the Learner starts young. It can be quite an easy Instrument if the budding Musician just wants to Learn a few songs to entertain friends and family, but it can also be mastered as a professional Instrument, and a good Guitarist can really make those strings talk. In fact, for a talented and dedicated player the Guitar becomes and extension to their arms.

Ive been teaching the Guitar for many years now and one of my more recent students was a 57 ye ar old coal minor with fingers like bananas. He told me that he and a few of his buddies wanted to form a Band called the Coal Minors (what else!). I just cannot believe his progress. In just 6 month starting from scratch, he has mastered bar chords, scales, and even written a couple of impressive songs with the chords G, C, D, DM, and E. It just goes to show that if you are committed, anything is possible at any age. Reg, and the Coal Minors are due to perform at their next works function and I cant wait to see them.

Its also important to note that you do not need to be able to read Music to play the Guitar well. If Ive read my Music history right neither the Beatles, nor Jimmy Hendrix could read a note, yet their Guitar playing did them proud.

Learning the Guitar is like anything we ach ieve in life, and that is you will only succeed with patience and persistence. Out of 100 students, I would guess that only a very small percentage continues playing this wonderful Instrument throughout their life.

I play Guitar because it gives me great pleasure. You can never stop Learning new skills and improving your playing techniques no matter who you are. Its also a great Instrument to take traveling with you. Anyone with a Guitar slung over their back will have instant friends wherever they go. And finally, a beautiful Guitar is very ornamental. Sit a Guitar on an upright stand and place it strategically in any room, and it will do wonders for the dcor.

Make Money with Your Music the Top 5 Ways

Songwriters dream of making their living by writing, and sometimes performing, their songs. But until that day comes they've got to make a living somehow! Sound familiar?

With a little imagination, you can probably find a way to convert your love for Music and Songwriting into a means of making money. To help you get started, here is a list of ideas worth looking into:

1. Sell your tapes and/or CD's online.

It is really remarkably easy (and pretty darn inexpensive) to set up your own web site and begin selling your tapes, CD's, and whatever else you have to offer. And, although it's beyond the scope of this article to tell you in detail how to do this, as a minimum you will need: a website; a web host; a means of collecting money (you can get a merchant account or use a service such as PayPal); and, of course, visitors to your website.

2. Write and sell an eBook about your Music expertise.

An eBook, or electronic book, is extremely popular th ese days on the Internet. The benefits to you include ease of production and very low delivery cost. Customers benefit from the instant gratification of downloading the book immediately after purchasing it.

Don't forget, information is the hot product for today, especially on the Internet. With a little effort, you can surely come up with special information that others would be willing to pay for.

3. Organize Contests.

Why not organize a Songwriting contest for all the songwriters in your area? Or, better yet, use the Internet and start one on a national basis! Let's say you collected 250 entries at $10 a pop... that's $2,500. Even if you offered up $500 in prizes, you still walk away with $2,000! You might also get local Songwriting clubs, Music stores, etc., to help with the advertising and even contribute to the prize offerings.

4. Publish an online newsletter.

Publishing your own newsletter, or ezine, can be an excellent way to earn some ex tra money. And, although some folks have succeeded at offering a fee-based newsletter, it's much easier to publish a free one.

Three of the most common ways to make money with your free newsletter are: sell advertising space, promote affiliate programs, and advertise the sale of your own products, such as your tapes and CD's.

5. Start your own jingle business.

There is alot of money to be made in writing Jingles. And, as a songwriter, you probably already have all the equipment you will need to get started. It's also good training because it helps you learn to write on demand.

Amore by Andrea Bocelli CD Review

The supremely talented Andrea Bocelli has released his latest CD entitled Amore, and it is simply a beautiful collection of the most romantic and soothing songs available on any CD.

While I have been accused of having musical tastes that are insanely wide and varied I should make it clear that until recently I have not been a fan at all of Bocelli, but ended up catching his Under the Desert Sky performance from Las Vegas on PBS and rather enjoyed it.

This led me to look deeper into Amore and have found it to be an excellent production.

Including some of today's top pop stars on several of the tracks makes it even better. Contributions are made to the project by performers like Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera making this a really diverse CD.

I will without hesitation say that one doesn't even have to be a fan of classical music to enjoy Bocelli's Amore. With the Spanish influence throughout the CD, and the excellent vocals performed by some of t he top vocalists of today this a collection music fans will surely not regret owning.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are Besame Mucho [track 2, Somos Novios [track 5, and Canzoni Stonate [track 9. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in Stuck On REpeat is track 13, Because We Believe. Very nice!

Release Notes:

Andrea Bocelli originally released Amore on January 31, 2006 on the Sugar record label.

CD track list follows:

1. Amapola
2. Besame Mucho
3. Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves)
4. Mi Manchi - featuring Kenny G
5. Somos Novios (It's Impossible) - Duet with Christina Aguilera
6. Solamente Una Vez
7. Jurame
8. Pero Te Extrano
9. Canzoni Stonate - Featuring Stevie Wonder on harmonica and vocals
10. L'Appuntamento
11. Cuando Me Enamoro
12. Can't Help Falling In Love - Live At Lake Las Vegas
13. Because We Believe
14. Ama Credi E Vai (Because W e Believe)

"Things Just Ain't the Same": HipHop's Reconstruction of the Gangster Rap Identity

Gangster rap, or hardcore rap, is generally considered a sub genre of the larger category of rap music, which itself is a subcategory of Hip-hop. Gangster rap is differentiable from other rap music in that it makes use of images of urban life associated with crime (Haugen, 2). According to the Encyclopedia Britannica definition of gangster rap, the top four images associated with the genre are violence, drugs, materialism and sexual promiscuity.

Gangster Rappers as Defining the Hip-Hop Social Group
As the Hip-hop movement has gained recognition throughout the United States, it has established itself as one of the fastest gr owing social groups anywhere. In the late 1990s immediately following the murders of both Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace, two nationally known gangster rappers, a propaganda campaign escalated against rap music and the Hip-hop culture (Slaughter). Although gangster rap only represented a small percentage of the Hip-hop culture at the time, all Hip-hop and rap music was instantly stereotyped negatively as being gangter-like. Why? Well, this gangster version of Hip-hop was the highest selling and most recognized form of Hip-hop music among the majority class. And many critics have determined that this is because America is in love with sex, drugs and violence (Whaley).

Hip-Hops Rejection of Inferior Social Group Status
Henri Tajfel, a social psychologist who developed a theory of inter-group relations and social change, argues that members of a social group deemed inferior by a majority class can either accept or reject their inferior position in society. If a group refuses to accept its inferior position in society as just, it will attempt as a group to change things (Coates, 8-9). A large number of Hip-hop artists have used their musical lyrics to reject the inferior social status placed upon them by the majority class.

The Reconstruction of the Gangster Identity
I have found that Hip-hop artists use lyrics, both musical and poetic, to redefine the negatives characteristics given to their culture by the majority class, and in the process, reconstruct the gangster identity. By examining these Hip-hop and gangster rap lyrics as text, I will show ways in which the lyrics attempt to reconstruct the stereotyped gangster rap identity by examining different views of violence, drugs, materialism and sexual promiscuity. In the end, one tends to wonder: Who exactly are the real gangsters?

Violence
That the Hip-hop culture represents gangster-like violence is perhaps the biggest disputed claim amongst Hip-hop artists. In order to disprove this claim, many Hip-hop artists have pointed to the vi olence that exists within the majority social group, and how it leads to violence all over the world. In Violence, 2 Pac demonstrates his belief that violence was prevalent long before gangster rap existed:

I told em fight back, attack on society
If this is violence, then violent's what I gotta be
If you investigate you'll find out where it's comin from
Look through our history, America's the violent one

Here, the poet points to American society as the violent one and that he has to be violent in order to fight back.

In Who Knew, Eminem showed a similar viewpoint by expressing his belief that violence is a common occurrence in American society, yet not challenged in genres outside of the urban environment:

So who's bringin the guns in this country?
I couldn't sneak a plastic pellet gun through customs over in London
And last week, I seen a Schwarzaneggar movie
Where he's shootin all sorts of these bad guys with an Uzi

Here, the poet questions the existence of violence in a country that allows firearms and violent movies.

In Casualties of War, Rakim blames the United States government, specifically its Head of State, as the group causing the violence in society with their war-like ways:

I'ma get back to New York in one piece
But I'm bent in the sand that is hot as the city streets
Sky lights up like fireworks blind me
Bullets, whistlin over my head remind me...
President Bush said attack
Flashback to Nam, I might not make it back

In this text, the poet refers to our countrys decision to go to war as an example of the violence that exists amongst the majority social class.

In The Watcher, Dr. Dre redefines the negative characteristic of violence by pointing to the police force as the source of violence, and therefore, referring to them as gangster-like:

Things just ain't the same for gangstas
Cops is anxious to put people in h andcuffs
They wanna hang us, see us dead or enslave us
Keep us trapped in the same place we raised in
Then they wonder why we act so outrageous
Run around stressed out and pull out gauges
Cause everytime you let the animal out cages
It's dangerous, to people who look like strangers

Here, the poet accuses the majority class of keeping them trapped in the same place we raised in and that the perceived violence is only due to the introduction of people who look like strangers.

These are examples of how Hip-hop artists redefine the image of violence by showing how it exists or was created within the majority social group.

Drugs
Another common disputed stereotype of Hip-hop artists is their use and distribution of illegal drugs. In attempts to redefine this negative characteristic, many Hip-hop artists have pointed at the majority social group as the facilitator of drug abuse.

In Justify My Thug, Jay-Z speaks directly to members of government, raising questions about who has made the availability and use of these drugs possible:

Mr. President, there's drugs in our residence
Tell me what you want me to do, come break bread with us
Mr. Governor, I swear there's a cover up
Every other corner there's a liquor store - what is up?

In this example, the poet inquires as to why there is a liquor store in every other corner of his community.

In I Want to Talk to You, Nas uses the same approach to challenge the notion of drug distribution by asking his representatives what they would do in his situation:

Why y'all made it so hard, damn
People gotta go create their own job
Mr. Mayo,r imagine if this was your backyard
Mr. Governo,r imagine if it was your kids that starved
Imagine your kids gotta sling crack to survive

Here, the poet claims that the distribution of drugs is not only an effect of the poverty that exists in his environment, but also a means of survival.

In Manifesto, Talib Kweli actually accuses the government of being the body which allows drugs into the country:

Like the C.I.A. be bringin in crack cocaine bailin out of planes
With the George Bush connections, I push Reflection
Like I'm sellin izm, like a dealer buildin the system
Supply and the demand it's all capitalism
People don't sell crack cause they like to see blacks smoke
People sell crack cause th ey broke

In this example, the poet accuses the C.I.A. of flying drugs into the country, and again reiterates the point that it is a means of survival due to the supply and demand of a capitalist society.

In Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangster, the Geto Boys fully redefine the negative characteristic of drug distribution by accusing the President of being a drug dealer, and therefore, a gangster:

And now, a word from the President!
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
Getting voted into the White House
Everything lookin good to the people of the world
But the Mafia family is my boss
So every now and then I owe a favor gettin' down
Like lettin' a big drug shipment through
And send 'em to the poor community
So we can bust you know who

These examples show how Hip-hop artists redefine the image of being drug dealers and users by again pointing to the majority class as the creator of the drug problem in this country.

Materialism
Hip-hop music is also seen by the majority class as a genre dominated by materialism. Again, artists point back to the majority class in an attempt to redefine this negative characteristic.

In Respiration, Black Star points to all the wealth surrounding urban areas, and how it absorbs the lower class in materialism, making them want parts of that wealth:

Where mercenaries is paid to trade hot stock tips
For profits, thirsty criminals take pockets
Hard knuckles on the second hands of workin class watches
Skyscrapers is colossus, the cost of living
Is preposterous, stay alive, you play or d ie, no options

Here, the poet talks about various materialistic aspects of the majority class, and how the lower class must play or die to stay alive.

In All Falls Down, Kanye West actually blames this materialism on American society:

It seems we living the American dream
But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings

In this example, the poet blames the American dream for materialism, saying it causes people to do the ugliest things for riches and diamond rings.

In Los Angeles Times, Xzibit also blames this materialism on the majority class, claiming that is what the youth are taught coming up in urban environments:

Welcome to L.A.
Where you can see the whole city burning
Cause the cops got Uzis and the dealers keep serving
And your kids ain't learning it, except this
Sex power and wealth, forget everything else

Here, the poet expresses his belief that certain aspects of materialism, including power and wealth are taught to children through occurrences in society.

These are examples how Hip-hop artists redefine the negative characteristic of being materialistic by showing examples of how this materialism is prevalent in the majority class, and often created within that class.

Sex
And the final debated stereotype of the Hip-hop social class is that they are sexually promiscuous, often leading to disrespectful treatment towards women. The poets also attempt to redefine this stereotype by blaming the core of the problem on society.

In Pussy Galore, the Roots claim that the countrys obsession with sex is pushed by sexually-driven marketing campaigns:

Lookin' out the limo window up at the billboards
200 miles, she was the only thing I saw
Promotin' everything, from the liquor to the nicotine
Cell phones, anti-histamines, chicken wings
You gotta show a little skin to get them listening
For real yo, the world is a sex machine

In this example, the poet retells a personal experience in which he saw sex advertisements as promotin everything. And in order to get them listening, he claims, you gotta show a little skin.

In Get By, Talib Kweli blames this sexual obsession on what we view on television:

The TV got us reachin for stars
Not the ones between Venus and Mars,
The ones that be readin for parts
Some people get breast enhancements and penis enlargers

Here, the poet expresses his belief that television creates a misconce ption of what people should be sexually, and that contributes to the promiscuity that is being blamed on the Hip-hop movement.

Hip-hop artists have used their lyrics and poetry to influence the rejection and reconstruction of the gangster identity that plagues their social class. This is accomplished through the redefining of negative characteristics assigned by the majority class. In most cases, these redefinitions include pointing to the majority class as the real holders of these negative characteristics. The redefining of these gangster-like images through Hip-hop lyrics helps to reconstruct the gangster identity by questioning gangster-like behaviors and which social class actually has these behaviors. So the question presented is: Who exactly are the gangsters?
