Eliminating The Competition

One of the most important strategies you have to adopt in your career is to eliminate the competition. By this I dont mean to focus on campaigning against another Artist, I mean eliminate the competition by playing shows together.

I understand that when I suggest playing shows with other Artists that some of you will have the natural reaction of fear and competition. Fear coming from the thoughts that if you play shows with other Artists, they will have the opportunity to steal you r fans and you will lose CD sales. Ironically, many Artists who think this way are the same ones who tell me they want to open for larger national Artists at shows where they will have thousands of fans.

Building relationships with other Artists and playing shows with them will pay huge dividends as I talk about in Tim Sweeneys Guide To Releasing Independent Records PArt 2 (order one at www.tsamusic.com/products.asp) and have taught to Artists like yourself at www.MusicStrategies.com. One of the first benefits of playing with other Artists is an increase in your fan base. Even if both of you have a limited draw at this point, your music will be introduced to another 25, 50 or 100 people. Plus you will have the chance to get these new people on your mailing list and more importantly sell your CDs to them. Thus making you more money!

One of the additional benefits many Artists dont thinking about is the following. Every Artist would like to play in different and larger venues. If you are playing shows with another Artists whose combined draw with yours is too big for your current venue, you will obviously be more attractive to other venues that you have always wanted to play in.

The key to building a bigger fan base is relationships. Not only with your fans but with other Artists who can help you double or triple your audience for your next show.

If you would like to learn how you can then turn this into airplay, press coverage, more sales online and at your shows, order a copy of my book, Tim Sweeneys Guide To Releasing Independent Records PArt 2 at www.tsamusic.com/products.asp and join me in October at Music Strategies www.musicstrategies.com.
