The Birth of Legal Music Downloads

In recent years, less people have been buying CDs and many are now downloading music online. This is due to the emergence of music download sites like Napster, and the rising popularity of MP3 players from iPod and other similar companies. People are now choosing downloads over CDs because of the expensive price of a whole CD, and they want to take advantage of the free music that downloads can offer. However, a crackdown on free music a few years ago has made shareware illegal and turned legal music downloads a popular alternative.

The creation of legal music downloads came about because of the complaints of many Artists and musicians. They pleaded with the government that they owned their music, and it therefore should not be available for free downloading through shareware like Napster. The government decided that shareware sites are indeed illegal, and allowed companies to provide music downloads for a small fee, as long as it was not free or through shareware.

As a result, music downloading websites began popping up online, with ITunes being the most popular. Napster also began providing legal music downloads to consumers for a monthly subscription fee. ITunes became increasingly popular mainly because they provided legal music downloads for a very nominal fee of only ninety-nine cents per song, and it was also more convenient than other sources. You dont have to pay a costly monthly subscription if you just want to one or two songs. There are now more than a hundred of sites that offer music downloads ranging from small stArt up companies to established ones like Yahoo and ITunes.

There are even a handful of international sites that offer legal music downloads. Russia has the most popular and widespread international sites. However, they are monitored very closely because they offer songs for as little as five cents each. Music companies and Artists are not very fond of music being sold for that little. It has been difficult to crack down on them because other countries do not fully recognize intellectual property laws.

You can find legal music downloads in several ways. It is advisable that you go through reputable and well known sites such as Itunes or Yahoo. You can also take a risk and download your music through one of the international sites that currently offer legal music downloads. However, you have to run the chance of a government crackdown or glitches in the site that can prevent you from fully downloading the music you paid for.

The Dark Side of The Violin: Crooked Luthiers Greedy Salesmen and Other Creepy Creatures Exposed

The Violin business has many treacherous tales to tell. With rare items selling at Christies for millions, the trade can be highly lucrative for swindlers, thus attracting unscrupulous salesman like fruit flies to sticky paper. As in other make money quick scams, such as the automotive industry and the current housing market, the Violin industry has attracted all sorts of scary salespeople, excluding of course yours truly.

Not all Violin sellers are dishonest, some of us nice folks are helpful, hard-working people who just love all things strings. But with an instrument that is surrounded in powerful mystique and glorified by films like The Red Violin, this high-profit market inspires many seedy entrepreneurs to cash in on the rotting old relic in the attic or snatch up Lot No. Thirty on auction to make a quick buck.

Such shysters get their sweaty paws on a find and greedily examine the Label, hoping they've fetched a rare gem. But oh, dang. It doesn't say St radivarius?

Sorry bub, but even if the Label claimed to be a Strad, all the Authentic ones have been accounted for. You're ain't gonna strike it rich on another dud swimming among a pestilent sea of million copies. Ahh, but some cunning salesmen have learned to change the Label to suit their bank account, making Fake Labeling one of many infamous atrocities of the Violin sales underworld.

The creepy craft of Label Forgery has become so rampant that it's difficult for most ordinary people, and even some experts, to tell Authentic from Fake. Some enterprising scoundrels photoCopy images of actual Violin Labels from old reference books, usually those of rare and obscure makers. They then stain the paper with black tea and craftily glue the impostors into cheap Violins posing as the real McCoy.

Voila! The Value of this old junk has just miraculously inflated by 800%! It's a ghastly and highly unethical practice, but it is unfortunately done all the time.

I think some Luthiers (Violin makers/repairers) are like computer hackers. The shadier of the lot are remorseless show-offs who abuse their talents and take up a life of crime rather than producing honest work. Like the notorious Mafiaboy wrecking havoc on CNN's website for kicks, a similar deceptive creativity oozes from dishonest Luthiers as they spawn very convincing forgeries of master instruments.

This is the nastier practice of copies. Not only is the Label counterfeit, but even the Violin is such a convincing Forgery that it stumps the experts.

Case in point, the Messiah Stradivarius Violin's Authenticity has been d isputed for years, resulting in anything from chemical analysis of the varnish and extensive grain examination. Some poor sods in lab coats spend weeks under a magnifying glass counting the tree rings in the wood to determine the actual age of the timber then somehow compare it to the date on the Label.

The final decision, if the experts ever come to agreement, will make or break the assessed Value of 10,000,000 so this science is taken very seriously.

Okay, it's not all lies and deceit. Some honest Luthiers simply enjoy the challenge of creating a reproduction for players and collectors who can never afford the real deal. It's actually an intriguing and specialized art to create a Violin worthy of the original maker. Simulated neck grafts, blurred Labels, worn varnish indicating years of wear and intentional scrapes and dings instantly make a new Violin more mysterious, adding to the appeal.

Certain copies are just as good as the original and it's fun to look over a Copy and appreciate the detail the maker put into it. The difference here is that the Buyer knows they are Buying a Copy and there is no huge hoopla when someone with far too much money pays $3 MILLION for a dud.

Forgery knows no decency and it doesn't stop at false Labels and a few scrapes. I heard of a prominent Violin Shop in England that used to keep a drawer full of old dust bunnies they salvaged from Violins coming through the Shop on repair. A profit-hungry Luthier crammed these nasty little morsels through the f-holes of Violins for sale, obscuring the Label and adding age to the Violin. The Buyer was tricked i nto thinking the Violin was ancient enough to have accumulated such filth and believed it must be Authentic.

(Really, I'm not making this up.)

Virtuous Shop owners get our Violins the old fashioned way: We order them from a supplier or maker, take instruments on trade or consignment from customers and Buy from other dealers.

However some greedy wheeler-dealers sink pretty low and prey on the ignorance of the Violin's owner in their home, usually an elderly person with a failing memory and an inability to stand up for himself. The wheeler dealer practically takes the Fiddle for a song (mind the pun) and the seller catches on to the scam but only too late.

It's even been rumoured that some nasty Violin barterers even check the obituaries and contact the next of kin of deceased Violinists! But maybe that's a hair-raising story Violinists tell their kids at the campfire.

This next chilling story really happened. During music college I was having a b ow rehaired at a big city Violin Shop. The owner talked my bow down and said it wasn't really worth fixing up. This is the typical ruse employed to drive the price down. After this he casually offered me $100 for it in its poor condition. It was too darn fishy, so I didn't take him on his offer. I've since learned the bow is worth at least $1000 or much more if it's sold on auction.

Another bloodcurdling story. Recently the host of a house concert I was playing at brought out his old Violin for me to see. Well, it wasn't really his Violin but an unwanted replacement. He had taken his original Violin in to some Shop for repair and the owner secretly swapped it for an inferior Violin and probably made big cash on the stolen one. By the time the owner realized he'd been duped it was too late and the Shop had conveniently closed.

Are you spooked yet? How about this terrifying tale.

Before I knew much about Violins I, too, was burned. The dealer had an Italian V iolin worth $8000, then on his written appraisal he claimed it's replacement Value was $10-$12K. I got it for only $4500. Was it too good to be true?

Yes. In the end it turns out the Violin was only worth about $1000 and the Italian markings were indicative of a typical German school of Violin making. I had saved for years and taken on several grueling gigs that summer to pay for it. I got my money back less $1000 after much arguing. I ended our business relationship and was what motivated me to learn more about Violins and eventually open my own Shop so this wouldn't happen to my students again.

There are many, many other spooky Violin sales horror stories that will make your toes curl, but I don't want to give you bad dreams. Just do some research before Buying or selling, ask lots of questions and if a deal ever feels fishy don't be pressured to go through with it. Soon you will Buy and sell with confidence and you may even help weed out the weanies.

As for me, I've built excellent business relationships with reputable companies and dealers and I've made the personal decision to never burn anyone. I'll never get rich off this practice, but I sleep great at night and there are no monsters under my bed.

Just old Violin cases!

Short History of Jazz

Jazz is sometimes referred to as Americas classical music. It has become a diverse genre with its roots in native American and African music; in particular, the blues, spirituals and rag time. Jazz first became a defined music form in the early 1920 springing from the US cities of New Orleans and later Chicago. Early Jazz was characterized by traditional rhythms and melodies being taken and improvised upon, giving a combination of swing and syncopation. Early Jazz performers of note included Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino, Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong. A good taste of this period can be gained by listening to recordings of Louis Armstrongs Hot Fives and Hot Seven ensembles.

By the 1930 Jazz had spread out of its local bases in South American and became more mainstream attracting white musicians as well. One development of Jazz was the big bands such as Ben Goodman and Glen Miller. Glen Millers big band became very successful and popular, but offer ing little scope for improvisation Jazz aficionados saw it as more of swing rather than real Jazz. However other big bands such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie provided some of the all time great Jazz recordings.

Whilst the Big Band led Jazz in a more conventional direction. The late 1930s and 1940s also saw Jazz develop in another direction through the creation of the new Be Bop craze. Be Bop is epitomized by the great musicians such as Charlie Bird Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sonny Rollins. These musicians took Jazz to new heights of improvisation, loosening the adherence to harmonys and rigid chord structures.

Unlike previous forms of Jazz, Be bop was not designed for dancing but was seen more like an opportunity to showcase the musical expertise of the performers. Some of the gre at be bop recordings came about as the performers played off each other, each striving for greater excellence and improvisation. One of the greatest recordings of this period was Jazz at Masey Hall 1953 featuring Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker amongst others, it is a very good example of live Jazz music. In the 1960s Be bop evolved into a form of free Jazz with little if any adherence to conventional harmonies and chord structures. One of the best selling Jazz recordings which characterized this new form was A Kind of Blue by Miles Davis.

Alas many of the great Jazz performers led tragic lives, a seemingly very high percentage died prematurely, inevitably from drug and alcohol misuse. Unfortunately many young performers came to associate drugs with being a successful Jazz performer so Jazz developed a strong reputation for association with narcotics.

To play Jazz music successfully a classical background is definitely an advantage. To be a successful Jazz player you need to be able to learn the chords and scales of the song. With this basic structure you can then improvise around these chords to give the improvised or Jazz effect. However to be a great Jazz musician a lot more is needed than formal training, successful improvisation is a difficult skill that appears to come easily to a rare few.

Song Writing: Why Is Completing Your Songs Important?

Do you find it easy to write Songs? Too easy? Well, I at least have had a problem with this.

If you would visit our home and my garage you would find a lot of unfinished Songs and a lot of manuscript paper with some notes on them showing that I wanted to say something with Music but never finished it.

Maybe you always finish your Songs, record them or have well documented lists with your Songs for easy access. That's the way I work now but obviously didn't work before.

Nowadays I have started to realize the importance of finishing Songs that I have found enough important to start writing in the first place.

I think it is important for you and me to complete Songs we have started to write for the following reasons:

1. It is when Songs are complete that other people can benefit from them and you can feel that you have contributed something to the benefit of others and to yourself.

2. It has a positive effect on your subconsious mind to tak e your composition the whole way to completion. It will give you the realization that you can write Songs. It's that simple!

3. As I mentioned before you will avoid having a lot of unfinished Songs hanging around. It can be unfinished recordings or pieces of paper with a few words on them indicating an attempt to create something that probably meant a lot then but now is just words.

If you are signed to a recording company you will be more or less forced to produce things. The product will hopefully be a CD with maybe twelve Songs on it and a show for your promotion tour.

It seems like slavery to be forced to produce a product like a CD. But having this obvious goal to work towards and the pressure involved can actually promote creativity.

If you are not signed to a record label you can benefit from working with your Songs in a similar way.

1. Set a goal to produce for example three Songs and set the prerequisites like writing one love ballad, o ne uptempo Song and a waltz.

2. When you have made the Songs record them and burn them on a CD.

3. Learn the Songs by heart and sing and play them for your friends.

Doing this will increase your faith in your ability to produce Songs and I think you will feel a greater joy and satisfaction in your great enterprise to write Songs for the benefit of mankind and, of course, yourself.

Lori Nuic Sparkles

A Soulful vibe along with an amazing Voice is what Lori Nuic is gifted with, she got the crowd grooving as she performed at Launch Pad at the Cameron House for the first time.

This Young starlet started out by playing a big part in a high school Musical, Leader of the Pack, bringing her to the stage today and playing songs that any crowd would love.

Just to have an audience to listen to you is cool, Lori said.

The energy in the audience was amazing as this Kitchener girl sang, looking like she has been doing it for years.

Together with her eclectic Voice, she mainly plays the Guitar but also dips into the Keyboard. Before Loris performance at Launch Pad, she asked the audience for some spoons or a cowbell which she also likes play, adding a little spice to her tunes. Too bad no one had any of those instruments to spare.

Dancing was what Lori started out with taking it into University, but she said, I knew that Music was what I always wanted to do.

As a Young age Nuic learned how to play the Guitar and her Voice was discovered after Singing songs from the movie Beaches with her friend.

It doesnt seem like hard work when you love what you are doing, Lori said.

She is not the only one in her family to have such passion for Music. Loris brother is in a band and plays the drums and bass. I look up to my brother because he is a Musical genius, Nuic said.

Lori is working on her first album. To her it has been a lot of fun to create, yet stressful. You will be able to see it out in early 2005.

I will definitely be looking forward to seeing Lori at the Cameron House in the future, she has so much talent and a great personality to go with it.

MySpace to Enable Users to Sell Songs

YES you heard this right. Sure you can check their website to get the complete information. But here is something important to tell you

MySpace.com plans to let its 77 million users sell music downloads, another move by corporate parent News Corp. to make the social networking site as profitable as it is popular.

Shawn Fanning, whose Napster software upended the music industry in 1999, will provide technology that enables musicians on MySpace to sell songs directly to fans and even for fans to sell to one another. It's really great for the bands and the fans on MySpace, but I'm very skeptical that anybody's going to make a lot of money off this, said Jupiter Research analyst David Card, who noted that no media companies make money exclusively by selling esoteric content to niche audiences. I believe in a 'long tail,' but I have yet to find a media company make a living delivering only the long tail without delivering any of the hits.

Longer term, though, some analysts said, MySpace could broaden the appeal of legitimate online music sales.

This creates competition for iTunes, said Ted Cohen, a former EMI executive who is managing partner of digital media consulting firm TAG Strategic. This, combined with the impending launch of Microsoft's Zune media player, could make the digital music marketplace more of a horse race.

Running a Mobile Disco Order of Events at a Function

First priority, MAKE SURE ALL SOUND CHECKS ARE DONE at least hour before anyone arrives. Start off with opening speech i.e. Good Evening, Welcome to (Insert Name) 30th Birthday Party here at (Venue name), (Introduce yourself and your staff if you have any), tonight we'll be playing music from the past 5 decades, and your requests as well.

Normally some music from the mid to late 90's or recent (but not too loud that people can't speak) Remember the first 1 - 2 hours of any gig - PEOPLE LIKE TO TALK. Music such has Sugababes, All Saints, Texas, Blue etc for the first hour or so (however it is possible to get bookings where they want good dancefloor filling music straight from the start). Announce buffet in usual way, e.g. Well its that time of night you've all been waiting for, the buffet is now officially open and situated (State where in room, so you can now go and help yourselves. Play some quieter music, such as the love album, Artists like Feargal Sharkey, Forei gner, Annie Lenox, Chicago, George Michael, Celine Dion, you get the gist.

Buffet usually I give them 25-45 minutes to eat.

At the end of the buffet, let the birthday person do there speeches, don't limit there time on the mic, let them thank everyone they want to, cut the cake etc.

Then after speeches, thank the speaker, get everyone to sing happy birthday (and play the theme music for people to sing to), after Happy Birthday, then do three cheers etc. Announce your plans for the next 2 hours - the types of music you going to play etc, and invite the guests back onto the dancefloor as the disco begins.

Start off with classic 80's dance hits Tiffany, Culture Club etc - remember there 30, they were in their teens in the 80's, and went clubbing in the 80's, They love it especially when there drunk. Move into some of the latest chart, dance & RnB, do not do Commercial dance / trance or beat mix it all the way through, you will probably clear the room, re member also, dont play any more than 3-4 dance tracks at a time. Its best to keep swapping the decades around, you should see when you change the music the danxe floor clear, then the older or younger generation get up, I call this stock rotation. Near the end of the night, the last hour or so.

At family functions, I play a lot of party stuff like, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Steps, John Travolta, Shania Twain, Ricki Martin and loads of classic 70's disco hits - Jacksons, The Groove Generation, Mud etc. Okay, now its about 11:20, and we finish at 11.30 so time to slow things down and play a Love song that everyone knows. At this gig, I would play Mariah carey - Without You. She did it in the 90's, Nilson did it in the 70's. So most people will know it.

Don't forget to periodically invite requests from the guests over the microphone, and if you have printed request slips, then these should have been distributed to each table earlier in the evening.

The Last song.

Well its this persons birthday - they are the reason that you, and everybody are there!. So get everybody into a circle with the birthday person in the middle (with their partner if they have one), if you can put a white spot light on the couple. Then play Tina Turner - Simply the Best. Make sure you use the mic to get everybody up and announce where you want the couple etc, don't leave it up to them to guess what you're planning. Once you have the circle and Tina Turner playing then leave it to them - they know what to do now. At the end of the song about 10 secs left, announce that was the last song of the night, one last time can we have 3 cheers, after 3 cheers, say, as everyone had a good night? If you've do the night really well, you should get a big cheer back from them. Then say, Thanks very much, you've been a great crowd, glad you've enjoyed it, have a safe journey home, Goodnight.

Switch off and un-plug some leads from your mixing desk, make sure people see you pull the leads out. They then know your serious and you don't get all the hassle of Play one more etc.

Remember though, at most private functions, a lot of the guests may be there just out of politeness or in response to the invitation!, and not everybody may like dancing or discos. However, just because people may not be spending as long as you would on the dancefloor, or are slow to leave their table, doesn't mean that they are not enjoying your music and appreciating your efforts. So don't become too disillusioned if the dance floor has only a few people on it!.

The Dance Music

As it has become more popular and commercialised so the law has had to become stricter to reinforce the guidelines that citizens must obey. People have always listened to music as it is one of the best forms of freedom. It is a fantastic form of entertainment and has been a community tradition to gather in a group and listen to it. So-called rave psychologists say that the ideas of festivals in the open air is not new as if we looked back to the stone age we would find primitive tribes playing music and dancing in order to pray to the gods for sun, rain, good crops etc. Before house music was introduced to England people had been going out to Discotheques and rock-n-roll nights but as the 70's came a new style of music was demanded. People wanted something synthetic and futuristic to listen to. There had been great influence from black music during the 70's converting the funk into disco music. It was the black urban ghetto that the earliest forms of modern dance music wer e created from.

Prominent and forward thinking djs by the likes of masters at work and Tony Dennis grouped together to produce a synthesised music which was futuristic yet tribal in its style sounding like nothing produced before. This innovative and original sound was Chicago House. This new sound swept through Chicago as the new acetates dropped in the middle of hip-hop sets to the ecstatic reply of the crowds. Soon there was such a demand for nights of this music that Underground all night events were organised. However at this earliest point there was a heavy influence from the surrounding police forces which restricted access to the organisers as they gathered outside the events. Chicago house spread like wild-fire throughout the U.S. and soon it had reached the east coast where New York took a new hold on the up and dance scene coming.

New York always promoted loud, obtrusive images. This had already been demonstrated with early rap music. When this new sty le of music was heard the people of Philadelphia and New York realised they could create a new genre of music through following similar guidelines but adding their own east coast influence. They reduced the times between the beats and imitated the same beat to create higher rates of repetition. This combined with erratic sampling and extraordinary synthesised tones became the beginnings of Techno. These new styles spread and evolved with incredible force and quickly found their way to the Balearic Islands especially Ibiza. An Island has been commonly associated with freedom and a positive attitude to music and recreational drug use due to its location being simple for imports from Africa, South America, Amsterdam and Spain. Followers of Bagwhan Shree Rajneesh had a base on Ibiza where social understanding and Personal development were believed to be gained through his advocating of the drug ecstasy. With drug use this widespread and religious groups regularly taking drugs made policing the Island complicated and combined with the often slack attitude applied by the Spanish police meant although drug use was illegal it was not clamped down upon as strictly as Great Britain. This attracted a wide range of clubbers from around the globe in search of a hedonistic paradise of Balearic sounds and unforgettable moments. A few of these early holiday makers were Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling and Ian st James. When these Britons heard the music and experienced the drugs they realised that this was what England had been missing. British Holiday makers brought back these visions and sounds from Ibiza. This was the beginning of the acid house scene in Great Britain and the start of the struggle between the music and the law.

When Acid house entered England it split into two definitive paths. There was the small but ever increasing club scene often meaning overcrowding and overheating and there was the Underground scene. Thousands of secret raves were organised on private or public property and often attracted huge sums of people and go on for days with immense sound levels.

How to Play Piano in Less Than 1 Hour!

If you're looking for a way to quickly play the Piano you're going to love this. Listen... most of you already know that the quickest way to play the Piano is by learning chords.

But what most of you don't know is what kind of chord to start out with. There are triads, seventh chords, diminished chords and thousands more. There are closed position chords and then there is something called the open position chord, and with it, you'll be able to create your own Music in less than an hour!

Look.. the reason why so many people have problems with the Piano is they give up out of sheer boredom! They sense that it will take months if not years to create something that sounds like Music on it. So they give up.

By starting out with open position chords, you'll immediately sound like a pro! Why? It all has to do with the way the chord is structured. First, it's a modern sounding seventh chord. All this means is the seventh note of the scale is used to along with regular triad notes to give it a more contemporary sound. Jazz Musicians use it all the time.

Second, it covers more than 2 octaves of the keyboard giving you a very nice open sound. If you love contemporary stylings, you'll be playing them in no time with it.

And last but not least, you use both hands right away to create with! In fact, the chord is so wide open that you can literally create Music without moving your hands around at all.

If you love the idea of playing Piano but don't want to start with boring triads or note reading, you're going to love learning to play the open position chord!

The Flute

Last year my son had the opportunity to begin instrumental music lessons and Band at school. He chose saxophone and seems to be enjoying the experience, most of the time.

Last year, when all the parents were called to the Band-room at school to learn about the school's instrumental program, I was eager to go. When I walked into the room with all the chairs arranged for Band practice, the music stands poised in front of the chairs, a rush of nostalgia swept over me. It was suc h a long time since my days of playing Flute in the Band at school. I, like my son, started playing an instrument in the fourth grade. I remember the first day of lessons, twelve girls sitting nervously with their Flutes. The music teacher was trying to teach us the embouchure. He told us to make believe we were kissing our boyfriends; waves of giggles filled the air. By fifth grade six of us were left, by sixth grade only four. Eventually, I was the lone Flute player in my grade.

My mother never missed a Band concert, quite a feat for a mother of five children. Band was when I would spend time with my friends Julie and Karen. They were one grade ahead of me, but sat right next to me in Band, they were Flute players too. We were all in the marching Band together too. Every high school football game that was played at another school, the marching Band had a school bus bring us to the game. We would spend the time on the bus singing cheers for the football t eam, or any song at all, a snare drum keeping time for us. At the games, one of the cheerleaders became our cheerleader, often directing us when to cheer with our instruments, it was so much fun.

Our Band director took the marching Band seriously, no rings or jewelry while in uniform, no gloves in cold weather. We practiced every night after school, sometimes for two hours. We weren't allowed to read music as we marched; we were to memorize it all. He had us practice elaborate formations for our half-time shows, we were good. A couple of years I played piccolo in the Band, I liked that too. The director was a stern man. Julie, Karen and I took delight in small acts of defiance, we were never his favorites, but we had each other.

I played the Flute for many years, but I was never a stellar Flute player, fair at best. I was not interested in practicing very much. My parents rented my Flute from the fourth grade until the end of school. Then my Flute was gone, given back to the school, I haven't played since.

As my son practices his saxophone, I wish I were playing along at his side. My friend Julie, who is now a Band director at a school, told us that the fingerings on a saxophone are similar to a Flute. I tried playing my son's sax once; it was very different to me. I find myself skimming the classified ads, seeing if anyone is selling a Flute. I wouldn't dream of buying a new one because I'm not convinced I would actually play it much. I rarely practiced when I had one.

I accompanied my son to his saxophone lesson tonight. His instructor had a Flute displayed in his studio for the first time. I just stared at it from across the room, then my son asked him to play it. I listened to the lyrical, clear tone of the instrument, and once again I was taken back to my youth. I believe it is only a matter of time before a Flute and I find each other, and this time there will be no letting it go.

Piano for Kids Creating a Practice Environment at Home

Children need help setting the right boundaries to protect their dreams. Helping your child in piano establish good habits that will support their goals is the first step. A good habit is like a little fence around your childs piano goals that will protect their dreams and bring them to life. Here are five ways to create a positive learning environment at home that will your childs musical future.

1. Establish a daily practice time when your child will plan to sit down at the piano and practice.

This is important because there are so many choices for how to spend time, such as watching a favorite TV show, eating dinner, playing with friends, doing homework, running an errand, etc. Everyday new choices will arise. To protect your childs piano dream set aside a daily practice time and make this decision ahead of time.

2. Associate daily practice time with another enjoyable activity your child also does on a routine basis.

To help your child buil d a practice routine associate their daily practice with another enjoyable daily activity. This could be feeding the fish, taking the family pet for a short walk, or having a story read to them. Think of something that would be meaningful to your child.

3. Be sure your child practices at home right after their weekly piano lesson or as soon as possible thereafter.

If your child waits a few days after their weekly piano lesson to practice, it is very likely they will have forgotten what their teacher showed them at their lesson. To get the most benefit from the weekly lesson students should practice at home right after their lesson, or at least the next day. This way they will remember what to do, which will reinforce practice throughout the week.

4. Eliminate distractions during practice.

Young children generally do not like to be alone. Putting the piano in a room away from the rest of the family can make them feel punished. Put the piano where your child can see you while they are practicing, or at least know theyre not alone. Also eliminate distractions such as television and ask your childs friends to come over after piano practice.

5.Make sure your child knows what their weekly goals are.

Focusing on our goals is the best way to practice with purpose and meaning. You want your childs effort to be effective. So ask your child, What are your piano goals this week? The more specific they can be, they more progress they will make. For example, Im learning C Position. Then you can ask them What is a good habit that would help you reach that goal? If your child doesnt know, have them write the question down in a journal and ask their teacher at their next lesson. Keeping a piano journal of their goals and questions will help your child stay focused. It will also help your child in piano create important boundaries that will protect their musical dreams and bring them life.

Music in Our Lives

We woke up one day and we were in this world. Innocent to everything around us, we search to classify the things that are inevitably part of our lives. With the books, the internet and all of the other resources that can help us in our every query, we seek to define Music. But Musics definition requires a whole book to be fulfilled. It is a long ever-present aspect in human life. To give a least definition of it, it is an artistic and crafty organization of sounds to produce an aesthetic and artistic statement. It is also a form of communication where sounds and ideas are arranged to convey a thought or emotion in a pleasant or discreet ma nner and still subject to different interpretations.

In Greeks, Music is a way of getting the soul in synchronization with the universal harmony and becoming one with the spirit of the muses. Nowadays, it is still a form of conveying feelings and ideas for the entertainment of the audience. Many contemporary artists have their own style; some acoustic, some fiery while some showcase their powerhouse vocals. However, it proves that Musicians who share their feelings in the most transparent manner appeals most to the people and therefore claim more enthusiasts. Music is not about the tune and the lyrics alone, its also about the emotions behind it all.

But Music to our ears does not need an overt explanation to what it is or where it began. A single tune may be subject to a number of interpretations and emotions to which every individual can dig deep in their personas. Every culture has its own Music and an attitude towards it. Those people who spend time chatting in coffee shops would gladly listen to a more classical piece. Punk-rock Music is probably adored by a group of skater kids. And as for others, they go into whats new and hip in town.

Its a reality! Music is part of our lives. And it is only up to us to discover the Music in every circumstance. It may be the soft breeze of the night, the sound of the busy street or the swift rhythm while we press the keys of our keyboards. Thus, it is to our pronouncement that the beats of our normal lives be translated to the Music to touch the hearts and souls of others.

How To Read Guitar Tabs An Introduction

Most guitarists are self-taught. They don't usually go through formal lessons learning scales and music theory... People like Jimmi Hendricks and Eric Clapton made all that stuff way too boring long ago. The average guitarist's self-taught nature may therefore explain why guitar tabs can sometimes be a bit of a mystery -- it's a bit too much like reading music. But that's not really the case. Let me show you how to read guitar tabs...

Guitar tabs are a form of written musical notation, but one that is strictly for guitar. Tabs have six horizontal lines, one for each string. StArting with the bottom line and working up to the top line, the lines represent the strings, E, A, D, G, B, and E like this:

E---2---------- (first or top string)

B---3----------

G---2----------

D---0--------- -

A---0----------

E---0----------

You will notice that there are numbers on the top three lines. This is how you would represent a chord. The numbers refer to the fret that the corresponding string is pressed down on. In this case, the second fret of the first, or top, string is depressed. Then the third fret of the second string, followed by the second fret of the third string. The last three lines all have the number zero in them. This indicates that these strings are all played open. So, in this example we would play a simple form of the chord, D major.

Having the numbers all stacked vertically means that the strings depressed on the corresponding strings are all to be played at the same time.

One of the major flaws of guitar tabs as a way of notating music is it's inability to properly convey rhythm and timing. This means that if you haven't heard the pArticular song or piece of music you are trying to play, it may be a bit like driving with your eyes closed.

There's much more to it than that, things like the letter h representing a hammer on, and b for string bends, and so on -- it gets complicated. If you're serious about learning how to read guitar tabs, you should find a good course to teach you.

How a "Difficult" Piano Student Actually Showed Me How to Teach Piano

I'll never forget the time I was giving lessons to this one student. Talk about difficult. She just couldn't get it. And the it I'm talking about is not reading Music or playing Beethoven or Bach. I'm talking about improvisation.

No matter what I showed her she just froze up.

I then realized something. This student really wasn't having problems getting the technical aspects down, i.e., chords. The problem was she didn't think she could do it! It was all attitude.

I then had a lightbulb moment. If the basic problem with most adult students is not technique but attitude, then I had to come up with a different approach to reach them. And that approach turned out to be mentoring.

Listen, what people really need is to believe in themselves. If this aspect is missing, no amount of techniqu e or theory will help. In order for me to be helpful, I had to act as a therapist so to speak... gently guiding students to believe in themselves!

Once they could do this, the rest was a piece of cake. Look at it this way, if you don't believe or have the slightest faith in your own abilities in anything be it writing, painting, whatever, your chances for success are slim indeed!

What I did to help these shaky students was basically a two-fold procedure.

First, they needed to relax and not worry so much about what was coming out of them. Performance anxiety can happen even when we play for ourselves. The critical parent shows up even when we're playing alone. I had to help them overcome that critical parent first.

The second prong was simply to build up their confidence by showing them how easy it could be to create once that critical voice was eliminated. They watched me play and saw that I didn't care if I made mistakes or if the Music was good enough. My mentoring allowed them to see that the joy of the process was far more important than any product they could come up with.

Creating Your Own Compositions

The idea of actually creating a complete piece of Music to play frightens many students. They just don't understand how someone could come up with something, put it down on paper, and call it their own.

The good news is that you don't need to read Music to Compose. All you need is to understand a little about chords and Musical phrases.

For example, in the lesson Reflections in Water, we have 4 chords to create with. We have the order in which the chords are to be played - and then we play, creating an entire piece of Music.

Now this piece is actually an improvisation. But if I wanted to Compose this same piece, I would just draw bar lines, notate where the chords should be played, i.e. every 2-bars, every 4-bars, etc., and either pencil in the first 2-bars of melody, or record it so I could remember the melodic idea.

This is how I Compose! I've been doing it for a very long time and it's a great method to quickly capture Musical ideas. If I were to write out the same piece note for note, it would take hours! There's no need to do this because once you have your chord changes down and know the arrangement of the piece (Reflections in Water is a broken-chord arrangement) that's that!

Speakers For The Dead "Prey For Murder" Music Review

First off let me put this out there, I am a closet metalhead. Although I was raised in the trenches of punk rock and came of age to the freaky-deaky Dead meets punk sounds of groups like The Meat Puppets, I've always had a secret jones for the metal. Many a night I can be found sludging along to Motorhead, Slayer and even darker fare such as Mayhem and Xasthur. Metal, Punk and Hardcore have always shared an uneasy alliance. The haircuts may differ but they all tend to appeal for similar reasons. The riffs, speed, distortion, distrust of authority and image of all of these genres blare out at the listener's psyche and body. The tone of the music demands the demented Tourette's syndrome like gyrations associated with the mosh pit. Heavy music is also cathArtic. We listeners hear ourselves up there or in there. We hear our pains, fears, hatreds and excitements magnified and given form. Heavy music gives size and potential to our strongly felt impulses. It reflects them back at us while also projecting them out at an often hostile and dangerous world. Of course the other side of this equation is our human fascination with explosions. Who doesn't like to stuff an M-80 into G.I. Joe's head and blow it to shreds? In light of these sentiments I come to consider the music of Speaker For The Dead's new album, Prey For Murder (Magna CArta Records).

At first blush the requisite, and perhaps overused, elements of the metalcore genre are all present. The scorched out vocals, the motoric blasting drums, ominous tempo shifts and thematic tone of the album could come from and number (perhaps all?) of the bands currently in rotati on on MTV2's Headbanger's Ball. The playing is excellent throughout and in pArticular the rhythm section of Gary Shipman (drums) and Rob Slocum (bass) score high marks for their solid bottom end and tone. Vocalist Curtis Shamlin is at his best when he strays from the screechy histrionics. He actually manages to convey more power when singing in his own quite strong and full voice. Towards the end of I've Become he drops any pretense of wailing and provides one of the albums best moments.

The overall highlight of the set is the song Long Way. While pays some obvious debts to more melodically heavy bands such as Jane's Addiction and Tool, this is actually a good thing. This song coveys a sonic depth and maturity most of the rest of the album lacks. You actually find yourself pulled into the center of the heav iness rather than being bludgeoned by it. This is one of the more beautiful and dangerous elements of extreme music in all of its forms. There is a way it has of surrounding one in another person's singular vision. We experience thoughts and emotions that may not bear any pArticular relation to our own. The sonic overload shuts off our reactionary mind for an instant and we're swept up in some else's dream or nightmare. Prey For Murder is an interesting if at times bland listen.

The band should follow their more creative impulses and pull away for the herd of other metalcore sound-alikes. When they do, they can create moments of dreamy, devastating beauty. When they don't, they fall victim to the predictable and formulaic routines of so many of their contemporaries. While I know that this predictability and sameness can also be a pArt of the appeal for fans of the heavy genres, I think it's safe to say that those who cast off further from shore tend to find new land first.

The Gong An Instrument Everyone Can Play

What exactly is a Gong?

The Gong is a musical instrument in the percussion family. A Gong can have either a definite or an indefinite musical pitch. Usually Gongs that produce a definite, specific tone are played with other specific-tone Gongs in a setting like traditional Gamelan, or an innovative rock concert like the Grateful Dead.

Are there different types of Gongs?

Gongs come in a variety of sizes, styles, and shapes. Like dialects of language or sects of religion, the instrument evolved differently in each location and culture it was used. Many Gongs are flat, but some have a central dome, also called a nipple. The outside rim of the Gong is usually turned down; it is not sharp-edged like a cymbal.

Generally, you can think of Gongs as having two basic styles: Suspended an d Bowl.

Suspended Gongs, which are more flat, are called such because they are literally suspended. They are hung vertically using a chord that is passed through holes close to the rim. Suspended Gongs are played with a mallet or bamboo stick.

Bowl Gongs are called such because they are literally bowl-shaped. They can rest on the ground or special cushions. Bowl Gongs can be played in several different manners. A musician can bang a bowl Gong with a mallet, but might also rub the rim with his or her finger to elicit a whole other sound.

How are they made?

Gongs are constructed of hammered metal. Most are made out of bronze or brass, but with an amalgam of other metals.

Although a lot of Gongs are made in China, they are not mass produced like televisions or plastic toys. Each one is handmade.

If you hear a particular Gong, like it and order that style, you must expect that the one you get may not sound exactly like the first one you heard. Minor differences are to be expected, and should be embraced. Don't worry though! Most Gong styles, thanks to design specifics, maintain a similarity of tone to the untrained ear.

Andrew Borakove is a media writer and Gong aficionado. He also is the proprietor of the internet store, Gongs Unlimited. http://www.Gongs-unlimited.com

You can find more info on Gongs there, and all kinds of Gongs and related instruments for sale.

Madonna Goes Back To Her Roots With Confessions On A Dance Floor

By now you've probably heard of the Abba Gimme, Gimme, Gimme sampling dance club monster hit Hung Up and probably wondering if the rest of the new Madonna album Confessions On A Dance Floor is any good. Well it's definitely good and has a string of very nicely produced tracks by the Les Rhytmes Digitales mastermind, Stuart Price, as well as a couple of other producers on the album. In Fact if you happen to have the Les Rhytmes Digitales Darkdancer album you'll notice some similarities. The similarities of the early 1980's sound that was present on Darkdancer and which is present on Confessions On A Dance Floor.

Of course the album gets right into the beats with Hung Up the best single off of the album. Hung Up has an infectious repetitive beat that makes you want to get up and dance. It's catchy and definitely the strongest single off of Confessions On A Dance Floor. The next big track is Sorry which is going to be the next single off of the album. Sorry is almost as good as Hung Up but lacks a little. I assume it's lacking the sample. Also, other good tracks on the album are Jump, Let It Will Be and Forbidden Love. The entire album is a continuous mix so as to have the feel of a DJ mix at a club. It is called Confessions On A Dance Floor after all.

Overall this is a great album but not Madonna's best. I assume she's getting tired of recording and finding the next sound. Perhaps she should release a remix album of her past hits. Or maybe release another Immaculate Collection. Confessions On A Dance Floor has it's moments so it's still worth checking out.

Would Chopin Have Passed A Music Quiz?

Q. My children are very interested in playing music. Is there such a thing as a music Quiz for kids?

A. Sure there's such a thing as a music Quiz, and you can find one right inside of your head. Just reach up there, pull it out, and put it down on paper. I'm serious. Who knows where your children's musical interests lie better than you? Right -- no one; so instead of finding some pre-made music Quiz, which may or may not challenge them at the levels that you want them to be c hallenged, go ahead and write your own.

The key to writing you own music Quiz is... G. OK, just kidding. The key to writing your own music Quiz is to come up with questions that will interest and challenge your children. Make the Quiz a mixture of technical, factual, and trivial (which is a lot like factual but with subjects that are more fun).

Let's suppose that your son plays the guitar and your daughter plays the flute. Yes, I know that I'm using stereotypes but it's j ust too hard to be politically correct when you're a simple Quizmaster.

A technical question for your son might be:

What does 'playing harmonics' mean?

While your daughter's technical music Quiz question might be:

What is acoustic impedance and why is it important to a flute player?

By asking questions that go beyond what their music teacher asks you are helping your child develop a 360 degree view into their instrument. They'll be naturally better players when they understand how and why those notes are produced and how to stretch their instrument to its limits by manipulating and understanding the laws of physics th at control the instruments. Physics? Can a music Quiz teach physics? You bet it can.

Since your children are interested in music, and you're going to be taking the time to write a music Quiz, why not fool them into learning other subjects by using music as the entry point into a learning experience?

You may just find that what started out as a simple music Quiz becomes a lesson in understanding how science and mathematics interact with everything that we touch, see, and t hink. With a little bit of thought your music Quiz can become a a major cornerstone of knowledge for a couple of musically inclined kids.

Forrest Gump's Red Violin

It was a dark and stormy night. A feeble old man's hands shiveRed with excited anticipation as he carved away the last curled shaving from the ancient piece of maple.

Magnifique! he exclaimed at his masterpiece as he caressed it like a mother with a newborn child. He kissed the smooth wood then gently hung it from a wire attached to a gold-gilded chandelier. The shapely object swayed gently above the master's head. Flickering candlelight danced with the ox-hair brush as the Violin received its first of more than twenty fine coats of hot oil varnish.

The Violin was completed and labeled at the poignant stroke of midnight on the start of the year 1912 in Lyon, France. The year would later be known for other historic events such as the establishment of the Republic of China, the discovery of the South Pole, and more notably, the addition of prizes to Cracker Jack boxes. All these events are shadowed by the creation of a Violin that would someday find i ts way to me.

My Violin's rust-Brown varnish had just finished curing when it was wrapped in fine silk and sent away in a wooden case. Due to highway congestion and no available carrier pigeons, French aviator Henri Seimet was asked to deliver the Violin and made the first non-stop airplane flight from Paris to London in three hours.

The Violin's first owner was the great-grandson of legendary Violinist Nicol Paganini who suffeRed from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The Violin's astonishing tone helped auditioners overlook the player's affliction and earned the him a gig with an 8-man band on a cruise ship. The Atlantic voyage was uneventful, unless you consider that last bit when the Titanic stuck an ice shelf and sank.

The Violin's last tune with the band that night was a jolly rendition ofRoll Out the Barrel before it was laid to rest in the coffin case, its owner saying a final goodbye. The ship went down in a fury of bubbles and miraculously the cas e came up out of the vessel with an infant sleeping peacefully on top. When the rescue ships arrived several hours later, infant Eva Braun and Violin were in the care of another survivor on a nearby lifeboat: Margaret Molly Brown.

Eva was reunited with her family and would grow up to make poor decisions in politics and boyfriends. The Violin, however, belonged to no one and was donated to a music society as a tax write-off. Joe Dawson, an eccentric race car driver, purchased the Violin (also for tax reasons, though historians dispute this fact) and won the first Indianapolis 500 race with the Violin in the trunk for good luck.

Soon afterwards Dawson lost his bet with Woodrow Wilson that the latter would not win the Presidential election; the winner took the Violin. Wilson gave the Violin to former ice hockey teammate Igor Stravinsky, who composed many of his best works using the Violin. A year later, in 1913, the premiere of The Rite of Spring was poorly received and fights broke out in the audience. Stravinsky himself was so upset due to its reception that he fled the theater in mid-scene, leaving the Violin behind in his haste.

Historians believe this is when my Violin received extensive damage to the lower bout at the end-pin. The facts that follow are fuzzy due to poor documentation, but it is believed the Violin was discoveRed in the theatre rubble and taken to a medicine man in Cuba who repaiRed the Violin with guar gum and papyrus extracts. The dear Violin spent the next forty-nine years passed from village virtuoso to virtuoso, who played for dignitaries, millionaires and other ridiculous people.

This happy holiday in the Violin's life ended in 1962 when one village Violinist, fearing the worst of the Cuban Missile Crisis, hid the Violin in a fall-out shelter behind 200-cans of extra-juicy pork and beans. In 2005 the canned food's expiration date came and as the cans were being disposed of th e Violin was discoveRed again.

A compulsive gambler who worked with the fallout shelter's janitorial service stole the Violin and put the Violin up for auction on Ebay. It was won by my cousin's dog groomer's babysitter's nephew for 50 pesos. I heard there was a Violin in the family and traded the guy an old lawnmower (he needed the wheels for a go-cart) for the Violin, which is now safely in my possession and care.

Over this Past year I have pondeRed over the mysterious label inside the Violin, Lyon 1912, and the spider-like cracks on the bottom that seem to be so expertly repaiRed using methods unknown to local luthiers. Hence I took it upon myself to extensively research the History of my Violin and learned what little I could about the Violin's History, which I have presented here truthfully to you.

Strangely, the people I've shaRed my flawless findings with have been disappointed as they're only marginally glamourous or mysterious. Sometimes the truth is pretty boring. I wish it could be more than that.

So now when people ask for stories about my Violin's Past, I lie and say my Violin was discoveRed in Elvis' dead grasp in a Vegas hotel bathroom. That'll keep them interested.
