Lori Nuic Sparkles

A Soulful vibe along with an amazing Voice is what Lori Nuic is gifted with, she got the crowd grooving as she performed at Launch Pad at the Cameron House for the first time.

This Young starlet started out by playing a big part in a high school Musical, Leader of the Pack, bringing her to the stage today and playing songs that any crowd would love.

Just to have an audience to listen to you is cool, Lori said.

The energy in the audience was amazing as this Kitchener girl sang, looking like she has been doing it for years.

Together with her eclectic Voice, she mainly plays the Guitar but also dips into the Keyboard. Before Loris performance at Launch Pad, she asked the audience for some spoons or a cowbell which she also likes play, adding a little spice to her tunes. Too bad no one had any of those instruments to spare.

Dancing was what Lori started out with taking it into University, but she said, I knew that Music was what I always wanted to do.

As a Young age Nuic learned how to play the Guitar and her Voice was discovered after Singing songs from the movie Beaches with her friend.

It doesnt seem like hard work when you love what you are doing, Lori said.

She is not the only one in her family to ha ve such passion for Music. Loris brother is in a band and plays the drums and bass. I look up to my brother because he is a Musical genius, Nuic said.

Lori is working on her first album. To her it has been a lot of fun to create, yet stressful. You will be able to see it out in early 2005.

Hip Hop Gangster Rap

It wasn't too long ago that hip hop was created in the Bronx in the mid seventies. At its inception hip hop was nothing more then a positive way to express your feelings on a platform that would be heard throughout the country and in some cases the entire world. Hip hop despite having an aggressive stigma was not feared as it was mostly viewed as a bunch of teens having fun and expressing themselves. If it weren't for the music and the movement known as hip hop, an entire generations feeling and beliefs would have passed by without being heard. While hip hop for the most pArt was positive, enlightening and self empowering on the east coast there were a bunch of youths on the west coast who also felt their struggles and views needed to be expressed.

Although the message that they were relaying on the west coast was not one that was positive a t all it still fit the mold of hip hop in the sense that it was still a form of self expression. The two pioneers of hip hop in the west coast were a rapper by the name of Ice-T and a group by the name of NWA! Their version of hip hop was highly abrasive and vulgar yet they showed no remorse for it. The point they tried to prove was that hip hop much like all other forms of Art is usually a reflection of the environment that the Artist lives in. They claimed that if your father wasn't a pArt of your life and your mother was hooked on drugs that your reality would surely be different then that of a person w ho came from a better environment.

What was once known as a peaceful movement had now became quite threatening to those in power. Politicians and police depArtments began to fight to have the music pulled off shelves and the concerts of these controversial Artist canceled. At this point in time in America, gang violence and police brutality were a major media concern. Hip hop Artist began to create violent music calling for the killing of cops and talked about shooting other's who we're not a pArt of their pArticular gang. Hip hop as we knew it had taken a drastic change and to make matters worse the music that was so controversial on the west coast had now become the most popular form of hip hop. It would be titled Gangsta Rap due to the fact that those who performed it were either in a gang, affiliated with gangs or rapped about gangs.

Although many of us aren't fans of this aspect of hip hop it doesn't change the fact that this music is here to stay. We have to face the fact that not only was hip hop created to allow everyone to voice their opinions (no matter how crude or violent they may be) but America also created freedom of speech for this exact reason. Whether you view gangster rap as detrimental or supplemental to the hip hop movement the fact is the record sales say it all.

Did Your Mama Sing To You?

Do you remember your mother singing to you? Usually there is a mother or mother figure from our childhoods that sang to us, lulled us with song, and often taught us many of life's important lessons through song. Not surprisingly, these songs become more and more important to us as we get older.

I am constantly encouraging new mothers and even pregnant mothers to sing to their child. The emotional bond that is created is so very important and, as an adult, can bring comfort, solace and joy when heard as adult. One of the powerful stories related to me by a patient was of a woman, paralyzed by an accident, who was waiting in her wheelchair to be picked up for a doctor's appointment. Before her ride could get there, a sudden ice storm blew in to town and falling trees blocked the street where the woman lived. Not only that, but the power went out and while the woman was patiently waiting, her apartment began to get colder and colder. In attempt to set her ther mostat up, the lady fell from her wheelchair onto the floor and could not get up. The woman lay there, helpless on the floor,and began to cry softly. Suddenly the idea came to her to hum the song that was the first one she ever remembered her mother singing to her; the song was a very familiar one to many of us... Jesus Loves Me. She would hum the song for awhile and then she would sing it for awhile.

She claimed later that it not only helped the time pass, but it also made her feel physically warmer and safe. When she was rescued many hours later, everyone was amazed at what good condition she was in, since she had laid on the floor for probably 4-5 hours!

The songs we learn in early childhood from mother or another significant adult figure, are powerful. I can remember as a preschooler lying in the bed at night and listening to my mother play The Teddy Bear's Picnic. Going to bed listening to her play was a wonderful feeling and made me want to learn t o play too. You don't have to be a good musician or even have a great voice to sing to your children and grandchildren, but what a gift it is! As I approach my grandmother years, my childhood memories of songs my parents sang to me and with me grow fonder and fonder.

Piano Lesson Playing Tip for Young Children Don't Measure the Music Just Pour It Out

Does your young child taking piano lessons or your piano student pause at each bar line in the music? Would you like to see them play through their music without these unnecessary interruptions? Heres a simple way to help your child overcome the habit of stopping or pausing at the bar lines.

Here is a demonstration you can give your child, even if you dont play the piano that will explain how the music should be played. Remember that when you child sees this demonstration they will stop pausing at the bar lines. So dont worry or nag your child, or criticize their playing. Just perform this demonstration and they will get it.

Youll need a large pitcher of water, several small Dixie cups, and a kitchen sink. Pour water from the pitcher into a Dixie cup. Then stop and put the cup down and fill another Dixie cup. Then stop and pick up another Dixie cup and fill it. Do this four or five more time. Then ask your child in piano lessons to imagine that the w ater in the pitcher is a song of music that they are playing. In order to pour out the whole song into Dixie cups you would have to stop pouring the water when each cup is full and put it down and pick up another cup to till it, etc., until all the pitcher was empty or the song was finished. If you imagine that each bar line and new measure is another Dixie cup to pour your song into youll have to stop at every measure to get another cup to fill. But we dont pour music into Dixie cups do we? So we dont need to pause at the bar lines.

Now pour all the Dixie cups of water back into the pitcher and show your student how to pour out the music when they play. Lift the pitcher high and gently pour out all of the water until the pitcher is empty. Take your student at home back to the piano to hear their song and as your child is playing, explain they dont have to pause at the bar lines or each measure like they are Dixie cups. Just let the music your are playing pour right past the bar lines until you get to the end of the song and all the music on the page has been poured out.

Try this at home and I guarantee your child will flow through their music and remember the lesson of how to pour out the musical pitcher of water so that the music flows right past the bar lines.

Music Videos The Extension To Musical Expression

Music has always been something that speaks to the soul. People listen to Music to relax, to create an atmosphere, to set a mood. Music consists of two main parts namely the melody and Lyrics. By combining these two aspects simultaneously you create a harmony that goes beyond explanation. The melody creates the correct atmosphere to bring you the true message of the Lyrics. For ages people has been satisfied with an audio experience only, but as the Music industry developed, people developed a need for an audio-visual Musical experience. Music videos was the answer to that need. There were, and still are, many Music lovers that have a negative view about Music videos. They believe that Music videos only have a marketing purpose and nothing else. There is some truth in this, but is a Music video totally useless when it comes to the message a song wants to deliver?

You have to experience the song without a picture to really understand it. To really appreciate the work of a Musical artist you have to experience a song through every mechanism available, through the artist's voice, through the specific Music instruments, through the carefully selected melodies, through the wonderfully written Lyrics. Your first experience of a song and its interpretation should be by audio only. You have to be able to capture its meaning before it is corrupted by a visual expression. Music videos are also a great way of bridging the language gap for fans who enjoy the Music of a foreign artist, but don't understand a word he or she is singing. After exploring a song trough audio only, it is always pleasurable for fans to see all the mechanisms of Music combined in a Music video, where you can experience the Music with your eyes, ears and soul, all at the same time.

A Music vide o should not be your first experience of a song, because that is when the theme of the song is killed. You have to focus on the Music and Lyrics to really appreciate the abilities of the artist. Not everyone looks good in a Music video, but there are many, not-so-good-looking artists that produces great Music. A Music video is only a different medium through which one can experience a song, the Music video itself cannot speak to you in a personal way, only the song can. The Music video only brings you the central theme of the song, the abstract, theoretical meaning. Therefore it is true that a Music video on its own, gives you a very limited perspective and can, at most, be an extension to Musical expression, but can't be the expression itself.

Piano Pedals: What to Do With those Pedals or are They a Foot Rest?

There are three pedals on the piano: the damper pedal on the right, played with the right foot; the soft pedal called the Una Corda, on the left, played with the left foot; and the sostenuto pedal in the middle, played with the left foot. In all cases, the end of the pedal should contact the ball of the foot in line with the big toe. The heel of the foot stays on the floor at all times, and the foot remains touching the pedal at all times.

The Damper Pedal raises the damper (hammers) off the strings at once, and holds them off, so that if the fingers are removed from the keys, the sounds does not stop, as the pedal is still holding the dampers of the strings.

Now let's work with the most common pedal, the damper pedal. The damper pedal is used for the purpose of playing Legato, or purposefu lly allowing 2 or more tones to ring at the same time to create harmony, and/or for a rhythmic purpose.

Playing Legato means to connect your sounds without silence between the notes. Hold the first key and keep it vibrating until the next note is played, then release the first note. This can be easily accomplished through your finger action if all the keys in your song are within close proximity of each other. If there is a huge span between the keys, then it is impossible for the fingers to play Legato, for the hand will have to be moved to a new position to reach the key.

By using the damper pedal, you can connect thes e tones and retain the sounds of Legato.

Example:

1. Play middle C, and at the same time depress the damper pedal.
2. Hold the damper pedal in the depressed position.
3. Lift your hand and move it up the piano to play a high C.
4. At the exact moment you play the high C, Lift and depress the damper pedal very fast.

How do you know you are playing the pedal correctly? All you have to do is listen. If you release the pedal too soon, you will hear silence between the two notes. If you release the pedal too late, there will be a point where both tones will be ringing.

Playing the pedal correctly takes practice, go slow and listen carefully. How do you know when to use the pedal? Change the pedal when you do not want tones ringing together. Change the pedal on every chord change. In classical music, it is customary to analyze the composition and when the composer is changing chords, change the pedal. Composers will write in phrases, which are similar to sentences, if the same chord is used, but the phrase changes, you would change the pedal when the phrase ends and a new phrase starts. As you progress in your lessons and gain knowledge about music theory, you will be able to analyze the music and this will guide you as to when to change the pedaling.
