How Important is Practice on the Drum Set?

Is practice important? Of course it is! It may not be the most entertaining activity in the world, but if you want to become a great drummer, you have to practice your technique. So why exactly is practice so important? It's because one of the most important aspects of drumming can only be acquired through regular practice. Playing with great timing is very important for drummers, and isn't something that can't be taught overnight, but only through months and years of daily practice. Here's a great tip on improving your timing on the drum set.

To improve your timing, try playing with a metronome. Set it on a low pace, like 90 BPM, and stArt playing a drum beat. If you feel comfortable at this speed, move the metronome's speed up a little, and go as fast as you can while still playing with correct form. It might be a little tough to to keep with the beat the faster your play, but once you get the hang of it, try this little exercise to see just how faryou've come. Record yourself playing a drum beat without a metronome, then turn the metronome on and play the exact same beat at the same tempo. Can't notice a difference? Great! If not, keep trying, you'll get it as long as you keep practicing.
