Andres Segovia the Father of the Classical Guitar A Remembrance

Next year, 2007, marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Andres Segovia, the father of the classical guitar for almost the entire 20th Century. This remembrance of what was to be one of his last concerts, a 1985 performance at the Arlington Centre, Santa Barbara, is a tribute to his extraordinary and ground-breaking influence on the classical guitar repertory.

Segovia was born in Linares, a village in southern Spain. Originally he was taught to play the violin, but after discovering a guitar at the home of a friend he rebelled, determined to make the guitar a respectable instrument on the concert stage. Both his family and teachers at the Granada Institute of Music objected, but to no avail. Unable to find a teacher capable of instructing him, the young Segovia became his own guide. To this day, he has commented wryly, teacher and pupil have never had a serious quarrel.

His first public appearance was in Granada at the age of 16, where his performance was d escribed as a revelation; his name was soon known throughout Spain and the rest of Europe. In 1928 he played the first ever guitar recital in New York, at the Town Hall, which received rapturous reviews. After that he played repeatedly in the United States and attracted a wide and loyal following. His influence was threefold; he established the guitar as an important concert instrument; many of the world's greatest contemporary composers wrote works for him (including Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Villa-Lobos and Rodrigo), and he uncovered a wealth of older literature, either original works for guitar or transcriptions of works by Bach, Haydn and others.

His recital at the Arlington ranged freely over the body of music available for the guitar, from Luis de Narvaez' Differencias on a Spanish Theme, written around 1538 to Danza Pomposa by Alexandre Tansman, which was written at Segovia's request in the 1950s. The differencias, or variations, utilising striking contrasts between the sonorous chords and dazzling scale runs, are based on a popular folk song of the 16th century, known as Guardame las Vacas (Guard the Cows).

As was true of all the evening's music, they displayed a master's command of dynamics and sheer musicality, but it would be foolish to ignore the fact that Segovia had by then lost much of his technical skill. He was after all, well over 90 years old, and a guitarist needs great strength and control in his hands. The repertoire he chose reflected an admission that he was growing old. Instead of exploiting mechanical virtuosity, his concert celebrated the breadth of musical dynamics which he displayed and the close communion created between performer and audience, even in a theatre the size of the Arlington.

The ovation that Segovia received, at the end of a recital which left the audience rapt, seemed to me a recognition of what he had been, not what he now was. But that was only a fraction of what he deserved; without h is influence, the world of the classical guitar would have been much poorer.

Southern Gospel Music

Gospel music is generally believed to have come from African American slaves. It was a way of expressing faith and praises through joyful music so very much distinctive of them. Most gospel music contains some downtrodden themes that can stir different emotions among its listeners; it has a passion that can be traced back to the slaves willful creation of their own worship hymns in spite of hard times. If you listen to gospel music carefully, youll understand the genius in it.

But the whites have also created a gospel music style of their own; the southern gospel music or simply white gospel. Southern gospel music is believed to have originated in the late 19th century from the white evangelical Americans. Its style, on the other hand, was believed to come from hymns. Typically, southern gospel music includes sparse instrumentation or none at all.

Contemporary Christian music is a fusion genre of southern gospel music and the bluegrass gospel is its subgenre. T he latters mainstream popularity is attributed to its secular Artists, including Elvis Presley, and evangelists, like Billy Graham and Jimmy SwaggArt. But history has it that southern gospel music has been developed from the Holiness churches that arose in the first decade of the 20th century throughout the south. This phenomenon created new kind of music for this new forms of worshipin addition to those traditional hymns that were created in the 18th and 19th century.

Southern gospel music is called such so as to distinguish it from black gospel. Mostly, southern gospel and its roots are attributed to the published works and normal schools of A ldine S. Kieffer as well as Ephraim Ruebush. And like black gospel, southern gospel also has numerous notable Artists and performers.

The Music Downloading Controversy

As the title implies, there is a debate waging about Music Downloading. As with any controversy, there are those whose positions stand at one or the other polar opposites and those who are moderate or nonchalant. The problem started when a 19-year-old college student created a computer program which allowed web surfers to Download Music from other Music-lovers computer via the internet for free- without going through a third party provider. Shawn Fanning invented the process now know as file sharing, founded Napster and got rich. Soon, however, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) along with several recording Artists filed lawsuits against the company alleging that they infringed on record labels copyrights. With the victory of the RIAA there is no doubt that File-sharing with copyrighted Music is illegal, but many industry professionals, avid Downloaders and legal experts are still debating whether or not it can be viewed as immoral. There are those who believe that Downloading a song without paying for it is not only illegal, but immoral. None-the less, people continue to Download songs anyway, rationalizing that the record companies are getting what they deserve after years of overpriced CDs or that the Artists wont really miss the money. Some people are not sure what to make of the situation, sympathizing in some respects with either side. There are several proposed solutions to this problem, but it has become obvious that there is not an easy or clear answer.

After recording companies experienced record losses over the last few years, contributed largely to this controversial prac tice, the RIAA has made its position clear. They commenced to take legal action against thousands of people for illegally sharing Music files. They view this as the fist step to encouraging file-sharers to stop illegally Downloading Music. According to the RIAA, over 2.6 billion song files are unlawfully Downloaded each month. While the RIAA had substantial losses, they are not the only parties potentially harmed by illegal File-sharing. The Artists who work to produce these albums, arguably short-changed from the beginning, are losing money as well. Recording Artist Anastasia feels that if you dig an Artist that much, then you should want to help keep that Artist alive by purchasing the actual recording. As a matter of moral and financial significance, File-sharing is a considered a large threat to the entertainment industry. However, audiences question which is the larger factor in this struggle. Furthermore, prosecuting individual kids seems to generate more anger than worry, says Harvard Law School professor Jonathan Cittrain. So, while the RIAA and many recording Artists stand staunchly opposed to ill egal Downloading, people continue to Download every day.

Lee Bockhorn, associate editor of the Weekly Standard and author of MP3 and Me: How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Online Music File-Sharing represents the masses of web users who Download Music from the internet. Yet, he concedes that those who Download and share copyrighted Music online are doing something illegal. Like Bockhorn, many down-loaders realize that this activity is illegal, but they are unclear about how it can be construed as unethical. Many of the individuals who engage in file sharing are teenagers, undoubtedly with limited budgets. For them, the harmful effects of their down load on multimillionaire recording Artists are negligible. Furthermore, it is difficult for them to view the situation from the standpoint of pampe red Artists and greedy recording companies. In the days before Music Downloads, cds cost about $17.99. Listeners often argued that they had overpaid because albums have only one or two good songs and are padded with worthless dross (Bockhorn). Moreover, Artists usually only received a fraction of the proceeds, making recording companies wealthy. These conditions contribute to the idea that many down-loaders have that File-sharing is not wrong because neither the record companies nor the now famous Artists will really be harmed by their File-sharing. But although a few occasional down-loaders might not make much of a difference, at its present magnitude, Downloading has become a major issue, one without readily available answers.

Heather Green, a reporter for Business Week and author of Digital Media: Dont Clamp Down Too Hard, suggests that record companies loosen up on licensing, come up with new product and pricing schemes, and embrace fair use, in order to appeal to Downloaders. She recommends offering services such as subscription sites. Talent manager, Terry McBride stated in an interview that the parties that are making the money are the cable and telephone companies and the manufacturers of blanks cds. Many people also recognize that these companies are also benefiting from the controversy, but are appalled that record companies do not seem interested in pursuing these culprits. Others believe that Downloading Music is okay as lo ng as the person does not burn cds and sell them. This leads to suspicions that the controversy is primarily financially motivated, leaving much of the public uncertain of their position on the subject. The theories suggested for reconciling the issue require a complete change in the way Music is distributed and a leap forward into the twenty-first century, using the internet in new ways.

Making Music more affordable and accessible to listeners in a way that they have grown accustomed seems to be the order of the day. Companies like Apple, have decided that it is best to get with the down-loading program. However, an end to the down-loading conflict remains to be realized. The RIAA and associated Artists continue to wage war against illegal Downloaders while computer savvy audiences persist in sharing Music files online every day. While it is undoubtedly true that Downloading Music is a crime, it remains to be proven that it is wrong. Without establishing this principle, most down-loaders are likely to continue the activity. Even with new, inexpensive and available means of Downloading files, they can still be shared for free online. The rift must be repaired between Music lovers who feel that they have been taken advantage of in the past and recording companies and Artists who worry about their future livelihood.

I believe that at the heart of this controversy is a drive to bring Music production into the twenty-first century. Making cds more accessible, economical and usable benefits all parties (except maybe the CD producers) in the end. Listeners can access Music when, where and how they want to for less money, as they have grown accustomed to doing. Musicians cut out the middle man, allowing them to keep more of the profit. This is undoubtedly the future of the industry. While companies are searching for ways to hold on to 90 percent of the profit and to continue to combat illegal Downloading, others like TwentySomething are negotiating new terrain to find a way to accommodate a new breed of Music lovers and Musicians. Musicians are able to make their finished product available to subscribed listeners for less than half what they had paid in the past, in a variety of formats for media devices. With the option of offering mpCDs, Artists can keep 95% of their earnings and listeners benefit from cheaper prices. In a world where everything must be more convenient and cost-effective to survive in it s market, why should Music be any different?

Building A Good Relationship With Your Guitar

The Guitar is considered the friendliest Musical instrument there is. It is because the Guitar is the handiest Musical instrument that could stand on its own. A group can enjoy Music with just a Guitar even without the accompaniment of winds and percussions. The term acoustic is referred to, in the Music conte xt of today, the rendition of songs in all the glory of Guitars. No percussion and piano and other instruments needed, just Guitars. Sometimes, it can be the jamming of more than just one Guitar. Acoustic is a favorite type of Music today because of its relaxed and soulful rendition of songs.

The Guitar can be carried everywhere and is one of the easiest instrument to be learned in no time. All you need is a songbook or song hits and youre ready to take the stage and perform to your hearts desire. It may sound so easy and can be done in a snap, however, playing a Guitar is an art that needs to be perfected with constant practice. There are basic steps you need to know before mastering playing the Guitar.

Basically, a Guitar is like a friend you need to familiarize yourself with. Get to know the Gu itar and youll be able to make good Music together. For beginners, the first lesson starts with getting to know the Guitar and its parts. Some examples of different types of Guitars are the electric Guitar, the base Guitar, the 12-string Guitars and the non-electric acoustical Guitar.

Parts of a Guitar:

Head is where the tuning keys are found. The strings are wound up around pegs which can be twisted to loosen or tighten the strings.

Tuning Keys are the keys which hold the strings. These keys are twisted to adjust the tones of the strings

Nut found at the edge of the fret board on which the strings pass before wrapping around the tuning keys

Fret board is where pitch and expression of the tones are controlled.

Frets 19 divisions on which fingers are placed

Little Metallic Bars/Fret bars thin metallic bars dividing the frets

Neck accommodates the fret board

Sounding Board the body of the Guitar

Sounding Hole (Rosette) sounds produced are resonated. This serves as the amplifier of the acoustical Guitar

Strings are of different sizes made up of either steel or nylon which are the foremost cause of sounds

Bridge the part where the strings are attached opposite. It is found at the body of the Guitar.

Tuning the Guitar is the next thing a Guitar player should know. It is where he can further intensify his mastery and familiarity with the Guitar. It is a gift if a person has the remarkable natural ability of hearing. He can determine if the Guitar has good quality through hearing its tune for the first time. However, there are people who do not posses that certain gift. But there are other ways of tuning the Guitar. One way is the ordinary method.

The first step to the ordinary method of tuni ng the Guitar is finding a tuning instrument like a piano or an organ to base the tune.

  • The E chord or the 6th string should be based on the sound of the lower mi key of the piano or organ.

  • Press the same string on the fifth fret, which makes it the A and base its sound on the sound of the la key of the piano or organ.

  • Press the 5th string on the fifth fret, which makes it the D and base its sound on the sound of the re key of the piano or organ.

  • Press the 4th string on the fifth fret, which makes it the G and base its sound on the sound of the so key of the piano or organ.

  • Press the 3rd string on the fourth fret, which makes it the B and base its sound on the ti key of the piano or organ.

  • Press the 2nd string on the 5th fret, which makes it the e and base its sound on the higher mi key of the piano or keyboard.

Make sure that every strings tune sounds just like the sound of its correspo nding key on the keyboard. And with that, you now know how to tune your Guitar!

Knowing the parts of a Guitar and learning how to tune it are vital aspects in picking or choosing very good quality of Guitar. In choosing your own Guitar, you must first try the accuracy of the frets. To do this, you must tighten all the six strings and check to hear a full tone when strummed or plucked.

Then do a complete scale for each string by, first, plucking the open string, then press the 2nd fret (of the same string), then the fourth fret, fifth fret, seventh fret, ninth fret, eleventh fret and twelfth fret. Each scale must produce the exact sound of the Musical scale: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do. The sound when the twelfth fret is pressed must be one octave higher than the sound when the open string is p lucked. This process is called the mechanical test.

After completing the mechanical test, the next step is tuning the Guitar. Since you already know the process in tuning, what you must achieve is to look for the fullness or roundness of the tone and not the loudness.

Lastly, the next thing you must consider in finding the best Guitar for you is the comfort you will achieve while playing it. Choose a Guitar that would require you to exert minimal pressure in pressing the frets in order to produce a full and booming sound. In this way, you would avoid blistering your fingertips which would make your practices easy, enjoyable and painless.

Hip Hop Pioneers Or Stepping Stones

I can't think of any industry where the pioneers are less regarded and disrespected then they are in the hip hop industry. In football names like John Madden, Joe Montana and Dan Marino are placed on pedestals and the players and coaches who come after them have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for them. In boxing which is one of the more violent sports, legends like Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard are adored by all. Maybe it's a music thing? Nope, that's not it either. If you look at the reception that the Rolling Stones or Paul McCArtney receive at their concerts or the box office tally for the Johnny Cash and Ray Charles movies you would see that there is definitely a respect and demand for these legends.

There is a saying that goes without those who came before us, we would not be able to accomplish what we do every day! So why is it in the world of Hip Hop that if you came out during a certain time period or if you haven't made an album in a while that you are considered a has-been. I know the demographic for hip hop fans falls into the generation x category who many people claim are the what have you done for me lately generation but that still doesn't excuse this conduct. Not only are hip hop pioneers disregarded and unheralded they are often the target of the newer breed of hip hop Artists. For some reason the Artist in the hip hop industry feel threatened by their pioneers rather then fortunate. Instead of embracing t hese pioneers they often disrespect and denounce them. Yes, it may be true that past great hip hop Artist have already had their time but I can't understand how that in anyway infringes on the current hip hop star's time. It seems the hip hop industry is in a state where their Artist's understand the quickest way to get a reputation is to try to discredit a previously established Artists reputation. Unlike in sports, movies and other genres of the music industry where it is common place to have the proverbial torch handed to the next generation of stArts, hip hop Artists feel as though it is their duty to take that torch.

It is clear to see that the state that hip hop is currently in is that of a dog eat dog manner, but this doesn't excuse the fact that these hip hop Artist are turning their back on the ones who truly paved the way for them and can still be of great service. It is quite saddening to watch a pioneer attempt to make a comeback only to have their leg s cut from underneath them by the very Artists they indirectly helped create. The hip hop fans are so influenced by the new crop of hip hop Artists that they themselves do not have the time of day for the pioneers who helped build this hip hop empire. Hopefully one day the true pioneers of hip hop will be rewarded and respected as they so obviously deserve.

Mindi Abair Life Less Ordinary Smooth Jazz CD Review

Preceded by Come As You Are and It Just Happens That Way, Life Less Ordinary is the third solo release for Mindi Abair since signing with GRP Records. I believe this is by far the most versatile of her works and may just be her best CD to date.

Mindi Abair plays with a maturity and style that are uniquely her own. I really appreciate the way the songs are tightly woven with those who accompany her on them, yet without being completely swallowed up.

She certainly deserves kudos for being an artist who is not at all afraid of trying new ideas. She could at this point slip into that familiar pattern of creating tracks that are simply designed to get radio play time but certainly does not choose that route.

With help from an outstanding cast of veteran Musicians, like Lalah Hathaway, Ricky Peterson, Keb Mo and long time collaborator Matthew Hager, Mindi blows new life into what at times can become a stagnant array of smooth jazz offerings. Smooth Jazz fans w ho are constantly on the look out for something fresh may find renewed hope in this CD.

Life Less Ordinary is a CD release filled with upbeat rhythms, seductive moods and a variety of songs that seem to push the envelope of Mindi's creative flow. Tracks such as Do You Miss Me?, The Joint and Slinky are great examples of just how funky Mindi can get.

Clearly apparent on songs like track 2, Long Ride Home is the influence of David Sanborn, Tom Scott, and Michael Brecker on her playing.

Although Life Less Ordinary does offer a full array of energetic funk, it also includes a somber side as well. Track 5, Rain is dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the City of New Orleans which I thought was a real nice touch on her part. The song captures both their depression during the hurricane's aftermath and their courage to recover and go on.

With this release she shows very clearly that she is a well rounded alto saxophone player and Musician. She sh ows a multi faceted side displaying skills as a Musician, vocalist and writer.

As one of very few female saxophonists in smooth jazz, Mindi Abair is definitely making her own powerful statement and making her presence known in the world of smooth jazz.

She is certainly at this point one of the freshest sounds active in the smooth jazz format.

With great songs, great sax playing and nice vocals this is a 'fun disc' and perfect companion for a Sunday afternoon drive.

I've heard some grumbling about some people taking issue with her vocals. I however find them to be warm, almost to the point of sultry and a great addition to her skill set.

I'd say this CD is a must buy.

The standout tunes are Do You Miss Me? [track 1, True Blue [track 6, and Far Away [track 10. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in Stuck On REpeat is track 7, Slinky. Nice and Funky!

Release Notes:

This CD was originally released April 18, 20 06 on the GRP Records label.

CD track list follows:

1. Do You Miss Me?
2. Long Ride Home
3. It Must Be Love
4. The Joint
5. Rain
6. True Blue
7. Slinky
8. Ordinary Love

Tagging Your MP3s

Most Audio Files, from MP3s to Tracks on a Compact Disc, contain textual Metadata. This Metadata contains information such as Song Title, album name and the compression rate. I say most because some Songs that were ripped by an amateur may not contain this information. If you downloaded the Song free over the Internet using Kazaa or the alike, it may not contain this important Metadata. On the other hand, if you downloaded the Song from a service such as the iTunes Music Store then youre guaranteed this Metadata.

Metadata is not a necessity to play your MP3 collection but its a nice addition to have. Music players will read this Metadata and display it (artist name, album, genre, etc.) when the Song is played, rather than just displaying Track number or File name. If you have MP3s that are missing Metadata, you can easily add this information using a Tag Editor. A lot of PC music players come with such an Editor but there are other alternatives out there.

< p>If you rip your own MP3s from compact discs, or youre simply interested in cleaning up your MP3 music collection, then you have several choices in obtaining accurate Metadata for your Audio Files. CDDB (which stands for Compact Disc Database) is a database for software applications to look up CD (compact disc) information over the Internet. There are also great sites, such as www.freedb.org and http://musicbrainz.org, that make this a snap. I personally use MusicBrainz and I love it.

If youre a MusicMatch Jukebox fan, you can not only add Metadata to your MP3s but you also can add album covers and even Song lyrics. There are now Web sites dedicated to album cover images, such as http://www.slothradio.com/covers/ and http://www.cdcovers.cc/. As for Song lyrics, there are hundreds, if not thousands of sites offering Song lyrics simply Google it.

If youre interested in an all-in-one package, including a player, Tag Editor and converter, check out MediaMonkey at http://www.mediamonkey.com. The free version comes fully loaded and ready to get your music collection in order.

In conclusion, be sure to include this Metadata when converting your MP3s in preparation of burning the Audio Files to compact disc. In some Audio converters this is not always set as a default but as an option, such as with the DBPower AMP music converter.

Music Movies and Portables Are Alive and Well

Apple unveiled the new iPod on September 12, and it is a winner! The new iPod is a 5th generation toy with capacity sizes of 30GB and a giant 80GB. The 30 GB gives the listener 14 hours of Music play, while the 80GB gives up to 20 hours. Both sizes give you a 2.5 inch color display with a 60% brighter display according to Apple.

The newest player has received excellent reviews far and wide, with PC Magazine giving it their prestigious Editors Choice Award.

With everything these little toys are capable of, users will continue to listen to songs, watch Movies and videos, play games, listen to audio books, view photos and watch TV shows for a very long time to come.

The technology is amazing and Apple continues to lead the way in portable entertainment. With the news of a breakthrough in laser-transmitted signals, the amount of information that will be able to be transmitted from processors even faster and more effectively has all techies waiting for the new est breakout in technology to be available for the general public. But alas, the news of this laser breakthrough also states it will be a couple more years before the tech community will be able to harness this power for you and I.

Thats okay thoughwith the amazing breakthroughs over just the last couple of years, time is going very quickly when it comes to upgrading technologies we already have and enjoying the ultra-fast journey. The journey seems to begin anew every 3 6 months, doesnt it?

Available downloads for all kinds of portable players are all over the web. Some sites are quite distrustful, and others are easy to acknowledge as safe. As with all things in lifecommon sense rules!

So, lets enjoy what we have, and look towards the future with anticipation. We will get our collective socks knocked off again and again if the past is any indication.

Why Practice Drums With a Metronome?

Practicing with a Metronome will improve your time keeping dramatically! What... you say you can already keep time? Try to keep time with a Metronome for about twenty seconds. It will show you how good you really can keep time. If you have never tried it...try it! You will see there is room for improvment.

In order to be an outstanding Drummer you'll need to keep good time, and practicing with a Metronome can help you do that. A Metronome can improve your time keeping almost by magic. And, we know how important time keeping is, particularly for a Drummer.

You may wonder what the big deal is and think, No one is gonna be able to distinguish any small changes in tempo in the middle of a song. Well, that may be true, but the major importance of keeping good time is at three different places in a song...

1) The times when you break away for a fill and come back to the original rhythm. 2) If the song contains pauses and later returns to the original rhythm. 3) If the song contains different tempos and returns to the original rhythm.

A Metronome is such a vital tool in music education that most teachers of guitar, piano, and violin all utilize the power of Metronomes within their lessons. How then, even more important for the time keeper of a band to practice with a Metronome.

I can't strees enough the importance of practicing with a Metronome. Once you go out and invest in one, start out by setting it at 80 beats per minute and play along with a standard 4/4 disco beat. This is a good pace to begin. It will give you enough time between beats to concentrate and land your beat in sync with the beat of the mertonome.

You will see that when you first start practicing with a Metronome it can become very discouraging, but then you will eventually get the hang of it and keep pretty good time. Then it may become a little boring. It's at that point where you must challenging yourself a little bit more.

Adjust your Metronome to a few more beats and increase your speed. Not so much where you will sacrifice your form, though. You don't want to become sloppy. Once you feel like you are really getting good at staying in sync with the Metronome using a 4/4 beat and at various speeds you should begin to practice a variety of different rhythms, also at various speeds.

Practicing with a Metronome will improve your Drumming dramatically, so if you don't have one, get one. You will be amazed at how much it will increase your level of playing.

Songwriting The Art of Writing a Good Song

Did you know that good Songwriting is often the key to establishing a successful Music career? But more than that, it can be fun! When you write a Song you are able to express yourself in new and creative ways. Whether you're sad, happy, angry, or in love... with words, you can fly!

Freedom of expression is one of the greatest priviledges we have, but with it comes some responsibility. Words are very powerful and have been used successfully by many for better, or worse. When writing a Song, consider how your words are going to impact your listener. Do you wish to alienate them, or draw them into your perspective on things?

A good Song will create an emotional reaction in people, and that's exactly what you're trying to achieve! You want to get your listener to feel with you. You want to move them emotionally. You want them to like your Song and be willing to listen to it again and again. If you can get your audience to identify with you on some level, you will be on the road to creating a good Song.

As you are stirring up your creative juices you may discover that finding just the RIGHT word is sometimes a bit frustrating. But with the RIGHT Songwriting tips and resources it becomes a lot easier! Here are three of the most important Songwriting tools you should have:

1. DICTIONARY - A dictionary is essential when writing. Besides giving you the correct meaning of a word, it will also help you to express yourself more clearly. You will discover new words while expanding your vocabulary too!

2. THESAURUS - A thesaurus is another important tool to help with creating your Songwriting material. You can use a thesaurus to find different words that have similiar meaning.

3. RHYMING DICTIONARY - As the name implies, a rhyming dictionary organizes words that rhyme in alphabetical order using the vowel sounds A E I O U. For example, if you were looking for a word that rhymes with Abel you would look under A sounds. W ords rhyming with Abel would be listed in alphabetical order.

There isn't really a secret formula for writing a good Song because determining what is good is subjective and a matter of personal opinion (some great Songs have broken all the so called rules). However, many successful Songwriters have used the following format to write a Hit Song:

INTRO: Approximately 4-8 measures of instrumental Music that contains part or all of the hook (a part of the melody that is easy to remember).

VERSE: Each verse should be written in such a way as to set up the chorus. Try to keep the meter of your Song even by matching the syllables of your words. Be consistent with the sentences that rhyme. Verses should create an anticipation of fulfillfment.

CHORUS: This is where you make your statement. Stress the most important part of your Song and make it tasty. Think of your chorus or hook as being like the icing on a cake. You want your words to be worth remembering.

VERSE: Continue to follow the idea of your Song all the way through, don't get side-tracked!

CHORUS: This is where you have the opportunity to repeat your hook which should continue to emphasize your Songs main theme.

BRIDGE: This is where you can create some interest and tension by changing your melody line, modulating to a different key, or adding an instrumental guitar part, etc. Don't make it too long, approximately 8 measures or so. It should build or crescendo to the final chorus.

FADE CHORUS: This is generally the same as your first chorus, but you will end by repeating it over and over, then gradually fade out to end your Song. Use your hook generously, but don't over-kill!

Be flexible and use your imagination! Don't just copy or mimic what is currently popular. Remember that some of the biggest names in the Music business made it to the top because they were not afraid to be ORIGINAL or have a different sound. So, experiment, be yourse lf, and most of all- have fun!

Guitars The Fender Stratocaster is a Thing of Dreams

The very first Guitar I ever played was a Candy Apple Red Fender Stratocaster. It was love at first touch. I wanted that Guitar SO bad. I grew up listening to Eric Clapton, David Gilmore and Jimmy Hendrix, and during my college years I was a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn. The Fender Stratocaster was the Guitar of choice for these incredible Guitar players and many more.

My tasted in Guitars evolved as I learned, and I discovered that every Guitar had their own personality in my hands. Some were sassy and bright, others were bad and loud, and still others just wanted to sing the blues. One of the coolest parts about owning a music store was being able to play thousands of different Guitars of all makes and styles.

But my roots have always been with the Fende r Strat. The secret to the amazing tone for the Strat lies in the traditional single could pickups, two piece body and the types of tone woods used to make the Guitar. Fender offers the same pickups played by Jimmy Hendrix, or Eric Clapton. Fenders custom shop 69 pickups will do the trick, or if youre into Stevie Ray Vaughn you need Fenders Tex-Mex specials.

Probably the best way to play the same Guitar as your Guitar heroes is to purchase their signature model. Fe nder has signature models available for Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Robert Cray, Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eric Johnson and more.

Rather a c or v neck dressed up in maple or rosewood, nothing feels like a Stratocaster and nothing plays or sounds the same. In everyones life a little rain must fall, and in every Guitarist life a Stratocaster must be played.

Strats are best known for their warm unique tone, but not all Strats are created equally. The tonal range will depend on the tone woods used in the neck and body as well as the type and configuration of pickups. When selecting a Strat to purchase take your time and research the various online forums to learn everything about the model you want to purchase. You may even want to visit your local re tailer and play a few, just to get a better feel for the playability of the model you desire. Sometimes you may find that what you think you want and what you really like are quite different. Once you are convinced of what you HAVE TO HAVE, you should check out the various online retailers. In most cases you will find better prices on line then at your local store.

Buying your Strat will be one of the best days of your life. So enjoy every moment and remember that you are not purchasing just a Guitar, you are purchasing something from your dreams.

Become A Better Musician With Better Practice Habits

As with anything in life, you will become a better Musician the more you practice and even though you can't expect to be an overnight sensation in most cases, you can dramatically increase your performance by the way you practice.

Most people don't think about warming up before practicing their Music but just like an athlete it will help you to perform better and learn faster. Always warm up before you begin practicing to settle your nerves and get your body relaxed so that you will get the best results from your practice session.

Another crucial aspect to practicing Music is setting realistic and attainable goals. Very few people can sit down and play a son perfectly with just a little practice, it takes time and repetition. Many Musical scores may take weeks of practice just to master one song. For exceptionally long pieces, separate them into sections and concentrate on a particular section during each practice session.

Strategy is also important, espe cially when trying to learn a complex piece of Music. You can play a tough to learn section repeatedly until you get it down or you can play it more slowly than intended and gradually increase the speed until you are playing at the tempo the Music was written for.

Before you begin to play a certain piece of Music, analyze it to determine the style it is supposed to be played in, what the timing should be, and the speed in which it is meant to be played. It is best to read over the entire piece a couple of times first so that you will know what the Music should be played like before you get started.

If your aim is to become as good a Musician as possible you need to practice as much as you can. When you see professional Musicians who seem to play so flawlessly, you can believe that they practice their craft for several hours daily with extreme dedication.

You should break your practices up into segments such as this:

First you should warm up, going tho ugh through scales, chords, arpeggios, and book warm-up exercises before attempting a complicated piece of Music.

The next step should to practice increasing the speed of your play by beginning at a slower tempo then moving up. This is similar to what we mentioned above about learning a difficult song.

Another way to help you to learn to read Music better is to attempt to play an entire sheet of Music you have never done. Doing this will assist you in your reading skill and enable you to learn to play new Music much faster.

Mastering the art of Music isn't something that can be done overnight, it takes years of practice and dedication.

Why Learning How to Improvise is So Important

Imagine asking a beginning writer to write a short story from scratch. Our writer does not yet have much experience in writing but accepts the challenge and begins to plunge ahead.

He has to start somewhere so he begins to examine how to construct a short story. He learns all about plot, character, and structure and now believes he is ready to begin writing.

As soon as he begins to write, he discovers something. He can't move forward. He is blocked. What's the problem? He knows how to construct a short story and should be able to forge ahead right? The problem is he has not allowed his voice to unfold naturally. His internal critic is blocking the natural voice inside his head and the pen stops cold. What to do?

Our writer must learn to freewrite so words can flow freely and not be stopped by the editor voice. The same principles can be applied to us as Musicians!

We may want to compose our own Music and we may also know all about how to do it, but unless we are able to improvise freely and allow our own natural voice free reign, the Music stops and we lose the ability to move forward.

This is why learning how to improvise is so important. It allows us to move forward! This benefits us in two ways. One, we begin to understand that the joy of Music making itself is its own reward. Second, we begin to trust our voice and feel confident in our ability to move forward without judging the quality of the Music.

Playing The Piano Using Chord Symbols Instead of Being Tied To The Written Sheet Music

Piano improvising and arranging is an art but definitely not a science. It is all based on Chords and chord progressions. There aren't any steadfast rules for creating an arrangement, nothing to dictate the limitless potential of your imagination. Musicians learn to arrange by simply arranging and improvise by improvising -- over and over again. It's a big game of trial and error. But its also a scientific method: you keep the experiments that work, and abandon those that dont work.

That being said, there are a few things that can help you in the knowledge of piano improvization. Don't think of these as rules, but rather points on a roadmap guiding you through the vast world of arrangement and Improvisation possibilities.

- The first step, of course, is to learn as much as you c an about Chords and how they work. Once you get a handle on piano Chords and the chord symbols that represent them such as Fm7, G9, D, C7, etc., you can then learn how to break those Chords up in various patterns.

- Learn several different chording patterns, such as open voicing, arpeggios, upward inversions, western bass, Alberti bass, swing bass or boogie bass. This course guides you through these techniques, in addition to others, and teaches you to understand when they're the most appropriate.

- Learn some right hand fillers, like octaves (and the multitude of harmonic possibilities associated with octaves), tremelos, grace notes, twangs, runs, and turnarounds. Again, this course teaches you these fills and several others.

- Study pre-arranged sheet music. Your local music shop will have tons of music books containing several arrangements; read and play through these in detail. Seeing what other people have done with various pieces of music will help yo u understand the art of arrangement and also introduce you to new techniques!

- Dig into different musical styles, like ragtime, blues or country-western. Pick up some compilation CDs focusing on a particular style of music or purchase some piano sheet music specializing in the style. Understanding the fundamental elements of various styles will help you learn to arrange any song in that particular style -- or just add a few stylized elements to any arrangement.

- Jump online and type in chord piano or piano Chords into your search browser, and you will come up with a zillion choices where you can learn all you need to know about Chords in a reasonably short time. Its not rocket science, and once you learn a few piano Chords, you probably will become addicted to Chords and their application to your piano playing.

Guitar Lessons Change What Your Doing to Make Progress Again

The reason why most people who try to play the guitar and are not up to snuff is that they give too easily. The problem with these people is that they tend to think that there is something wrong with them and why they simply cannot get the strings to sound right.

In reality, falling short in learning to play the guitar is not based on the capability of the person but more on the kind of style he is using. If he is trapped in a certain level of progress in guitar playing, it should likewise not be blamed on the person but on the kind of approach that he used.

When things like these happen, the only way to get going is to change the style to achieve remarkable results.

In fact, 8 out of the 10 people who were asked what made them continue learning to play the guitar, they answered that it was because they used a wonderful technique that some people take for granted. This approach is known as feeling the beat.

People who are considered experts in play ing the guitar insist that the only distinction that sets a good guitarist apart from a distinguished guitarist is based on how they apply the approach feel the beat to their tune using their instrument.

The basic argument here is that trying to get things going by simply feeling the beat while you play the guitar will absolutely change your style of learning and playing the guitar. When people try to feel the beat as they play the instrument, they get to internalize the pulse of the music as it flows from the strings out to the audience.

This is probably the same reason why some people insist that music is the language of the soul. It is basically the main idea of using this kind of approach.

Music experts assert that it is how the great composers and singers stand out from the rest. When musicians learn to feel the beat, they tend to put the notes into their system and let every tone flow along with the beat of their heart.

The question now is: how do you start feeling the beat. Here are some tips to get started:

1. Internalize the beat

When you want to learn how to play the guitar you must get your emotions ready. Try to feel the beat by listening to the music and bridge a connection between your feelings and the music.

The very core of this approach is to feel the beat of the music flowing into your system.

Once you get the beat connected to your system, take hold of your guitar, and start hitting those strings. Try not to play a song that you already know. The idea is to release the feeling and let the notes flow with what you feel.

2. Play by the ear

As soon as you learn how to feel the beat, you can start playing by ear; this is when you can play the song on your guitar just by listening to it over and over again.

Historical reports show that some great musicians learn to play the instrument by using this approach, because once they start to sense the pulse of the song; th ey gradually pluck the notes and begin to play the song as they continue to play.

Most people who play the guitar and write songs do not simply use those tabs and musical sheets. They just try to fathom the song by playing by ear.

The bottom line is that learning to play the guitar does not have to be rigid and strict or why guitar playing is not specifically exclusive for those talented in music. The instrument is available for everyone, young and old, big and small, boy and girls. The idea is to take some time to learn the instrument. Trying to feel the beat does not happen in a snap. You have to allot adequate time to start putting the notes into your system.

The truth is that people who failed to learn guitar playing simply lacked the time and patience to do all of these things. Becoming an expert in what you do is simply having the time for it, and if you do, you will start to get the ball rolling and the notes flying in the air.

CD Clubs: How to Get the Best Deals Online

(1) The BMG Music Service offers the best deal you'll find -- 11 CDs for the price of shipping ($2.79 each) when you buy one CD at full Club price, which is typically about $15 plus shipping. That works out to about $4 per CD. Its chief competitor, Columbia House, has an offer that works out to about $8 per CD.

(2) When you join, you will receive a catalog in the mail about every three weeks, along with a postcard that highlights a featured selection in the genre you selected when you joined. You must return this postcard by the due date or the Club will send you the selection. You can decline online, however, by logging into your account. This makes the process much easier.

(3) If you forget to return the card and receive a CD you don't want, the Clubs are good about letting you return it. But the beauty of this system for the Clubs is that this happens often enough and many people don't bother sending it back. They just pay the invoice.

(4) If you don't see the CDs you want in a newspaper or magazine advertisement visit the Club's site to browse. Copy down the item number of the CDs into the form (some titles will not be available as Free selections and this will be indicated). Also, the Clubs usually do not have the latest and greatest albums until months after their release.

(5) The Clubs press their own CDs, which some people feel makes them inferior. But if you can hear the difference, you have better senses than most humans.

(6) The Clubs no longer have toll-Free numbers, so the best way to contact them is by email. Always include your account number. The current phone number and email address is listed each month in your membership catalog.

Piano Lessons for Children Bring Music to Life

Bringing music to life is a musicians job and their joy. Children taking piano lessons can also learn to bring life and Artistry into the pieces they are playing once they understand this concept. But how is this communicated to a child who plays mechanically and doesnt know how to make their pieces sound, well, human?

Here some ways to do this which I do not recommend.

1. Tell the student who has no idea what you are talking about that they play like a machine.

2. Tell the student who has no idea what you are talking about that their playing sounds so terrible they should quit because playing piano just isnt their forte.

3. Tell the student who has no idea what you are talking about that they are incapable of playing beautiful music on the piano because they just dont have the person ality for it.

I dont recommend any of these approaches, because only someone who doesn't have any idea what the problem is would do this. Too bad for them, but this doesnt have to be you.

Heres the real issue and what you can do about it. The reason students sometimes dont understand how to bring their music to life is because they dont know that they can. Try having this conversation with your child or piano student.

Sally, do you see this page of music? Do you know what it is?

Here are the answers that 95 percent of students give.

Uuuhhmmm.notes? Uuuhhmmmmmusic? Uuuhhmmmmmmy lesson?

Before I tell you my answer to this question, think about how you would answer it if you were the piano student? Do you have a better one? Heres mine.

No Sally, what you are looking at are just ink blots on paper. Thats it. Thats all you see here. There is no life in those ink blots or the paper they are printed on. There is no life in the pi ano you are playing on. It is just a mechanical device to make sounds. But music has life!!! When you hear a jazzy beat and stArt to tap your foot or swing to the music, thats life! When you hear a lullaby and it makes to want to rest, thats life. Music has power to affect us, but where does that energy come from?

Uuuhhmmm.I dont know?

Well, lets think about this for a moment. The ink blots on the paper arent alive, and the piano youre playing isnt alive, so what else could bring the music to life?

Uuuhhmmm.I dont know?

Are you alive, Sally?

Yes!

Sure you are alive, and you have the power to bring this music to life. Thats what learning to play the piano is all about.

You can do that by putting a little Sally into your playing. You have a great personality, Sally. Let it shine through in your music. Communicate each note like you would tell a personal story of interest to your best friend. It takes hard work and planning to learn to play the piano, Sally, but it also takes a little magic. And you have the magic it takes to bring ink blots on paper to life!

Panic! at the Disco's Fast Rising Popularity

Panic! at the Disco is a pop rock/electronica band based out of Las Vegas, Nevada. The band is comprised of Brendon Urie (vocals, guitar, keyboard) and his childhood friend, Spencer Smiths (drums), along with their schoolmate, Ryan Ross (guitar, keyboard, backing vocals).

To promote their music, the band made contact with Pete Wentz (of Fall Out Boy) via his LiveJournal webpage. Impressed by the band, Wentz personally met with the band and signed them to his imprint label Decaydance. Under the label, the band released their debut album, A Fever You Cant Sweat Out, which would debut at #112 on the Billboard 200 album chArts.

Featured in Spin magazine as their band of the day in early October 2005, reaching #1 on the MySpace chArt, and consistently staying in PureVolumes Top 10 chArt, would only help grow the bands popularity. An appearance on MTVs TRL on January 17, 2006, at the premier of their music video for I Write Sins Not Tragedies, also helped garner the band much publicity.

To date, the bands 2005 debut album, A Fever you Cant Sweat Out has sold over 750,000 units. The band is currently headlining a North American summer tour with The Dresden Dolls and The Hush Sound, a band also signed to Decaydance.

Choosing The Right Guitar Pickup

Choosing electric guitar pickup replacements is a common decision made by guitar players. Even the beginning player knows that having sub-par pickups is going to affect the sound that your new or old guitar produces. When someone purchases a guitar that isn't very expensive, it usually comes equipped with pickups that are either poor quality, or not to the taste of the consumer. For this reason, you can order or purchase many different pickups from many different companies to best suit the sound you desire.

Many vendors offer a wide variety of pickups for all types of Guitars. Some of the main types of pickups are single-coil, humbuckers and acoustic. The single-coil picks are usually seen on the popular Fender Stratocaster. The Stratocaster is not the only guitar that carries this style of pickup. Thousands of other Guitars use these as well. The one main difference between a Stratocaster and another guitar using single-coil pickups is the company that manufactures them. Fender offers top quality single-coil pickups to purchase even if your Strat did not come equipped with the ones you were wishing for. It is probably best to try out different Guitars on the same amp to see what the best sound is for you. The single-coil pickups usually have a vintage tone, with more noticeable feedback. Fender does offer pickups that have less feedback though. Some Guitars use up to three different pickups at once.

If you are searching for a more powerful tone, grabbing some humbucking pickups is the best choice. Such companies as Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio offer pickups for a wide range of guitarists. There are humbuckers for anything from a blues sound to a heavy crunch sound. These manufacturers have descriptions on whether the pickups produce a high pitch tone, or a warm, bass sound. To obtain these sounds, the pickups are loaded with different magnets, screws and wires. There are vintage sounding humbuckers as well, usually seen on the Les Paul style Guitars by Gibson.

Acoustic Guitars only require one small pickup and the variety is not as wide. Acoustic Guitars don't have nearly as many pickup choices due to the fact you are just trying to amplify the sound of the acoustic guitar and not change the acoustic tone. The three major types of acoustic pickups are soundhole pickups, soundboard transducers and undersaddle transducers. The soundhole pickups generally make your acoustic guitar sound and look more like an electric guitar. These soundhole style pickups normally sound less like the unplugged acoustic. Soundboard transducers are the most natural sounding of the three. Although they are more prone to feedback problems, they give you the more authentic sound . That just leaves the undersaddle transducers, which are less visible than the other types. The undersaddle style has a more natural sound than the soundhole pickup but is used for finger picking and light to moderate strumming. Strumming too hard, or using a heavy pick can cause the undersaddle transducer to produce an awkward sound.

After brief introductions to all the different types of pickups available today, you should have an easier time choosing which pickup or pickups suit you best. Just remember to do at least a little research before spending your hard earned money and experiment until you make a decision you will never regret.

Origin of Erik Satie's "Gnossiennes"

The 'trois Gnossiennes' (1890) is a set of dance-like pieces of similar character, like the earlier composed 'trois Sarabandes' (1887) and 'trois Gymnopdies' (1888). The 'trois Gnossiennes' were first published by Satie as a set through Rouart, Lerolle & Cie. in 1913.

The Gnossiennes continue in the minimalist style of the Gymnopdies but add ornaments that give the pieces a destinctly oriental feel. Although the pieces are obviously composed in a 4/4 time signature, Satie did not indicate it in the score. He also omitted barlines, leaving one big bar for the entire piece. This gives the impression of great freedom for the pianist. The comments written above the score, like 'Du bout de la pense' (from the tip of the thought) and 'Postulez en vous mme' (wonder about yourself) also give much room for interpretation. This has proven to be true since there are few pieces in Piano literature that have been interpretated in such diverse ways as the Gnossiennes.

The name 'Gnossiennes' can be explained in multiple ways. The ancient Greek word for 'knowledge' is 'gnosis'. Gnosticism was the name of a religious-philosophical belief which has its origins in Greek philosophy as well as early Christian and Jewish Apocalyptic thoughts. In this belief 'Gnosis' stands for 'True knowledge', which is supposed to lead man to true emancipation. Gnosticism also played a great role in the beliefs of Josphin Pladan's (1859-1918) 'Rose et croix' sect. Satie's collaboration with Pladan led him to take an interest in partly-heretical views. It is possible that the title of these works is an hommage to gnosticism.

The most common explanation however is that the title refers to the ritual dances performed by the inhabitants of the island of Crete, with its capitol city Knossos, famous in Greek mythology for the story of its labyrinth, Theseus and the minotaur. In 1890 Crete was in the news because of archeological excavations. Other works by Satie from the same period were named after dances as well. Namely the 'Sarabande', a dance which was first introduced in Portugal in 1586 and the 'Gymnopdie' which has its origins in ancient Sparta. Even so, it is very unlikely that Satie, a member of the 'Rose et croix' from 1891 to 1892, was unaware of the gnosticism relation when the second Gnossienne was first publicly performed in 1893.

In 1967 french composer Robert Caby (1905-1992) revealed many of Satie's posthumous and often untitled works, taken from sketchbooks and manuscripts. He named three of these pieces Gnossienne. These became Gnossienne 4, 5 and 6 respectively. The piece known as the fourth Gnossienne was composed in 1891, the fifth in 1889 and the sixth in 1897. These pieces were first published in 1968 by ed. Salabert.
