The Throbbing Pulsating World Of The VJs And RJs: Amalgamating Music And Technology!

If music be the food for love, play on...

Remember the bard's fabulous line in his romantic comedy, Twelfth Night, that celebrates the romantic passion of humans through the magical device of melodies? Yes, ages have passed by since, and our ardent fervor for music is miraculously magnifying with the passing of every single day. The advent of the electronic media (radio and television) has further accelerated our quest for listening to melodies with providing greater exposure to our favorite singers and their albums. Ages ago, one would have to be a privileged member of Akbar's sabha to listen to the soulful chanting of Miyan Tansen. However, years and ages passed after that and the 60's and 70's audience today fondly remember their pristine days of Binaca Geetmala, where the lively and spirited Ameen Sayani popularized the concept of live music broadcasting, and brought the timeless Indian classics to our drawing rooms.

Today, with an abundance of Entertainment programs on television, one cannot help noticing young boys or girls anchoring different music shows. In Channel V or MTV, which airs music shows on the TV throughout the day, almost every hour the anchor changes and a fresh face comes up. Sometimes these programs are telecast live, in which the anchor has to interact with the live audience. These professionals are referred to as Video Jockeys, responsible for anchoring the music shows and also for maintaining the interests of viewers in that pArticular program. In radio broadcast, these professionals with pleasant and lively voice are called radio jockeys. In India, mainly the y oung generation is largely dependent upon the television or radio for viewing or listening to their favorite music. With a host of international music shows on Channel V and MTV, an ardent lover of Jazz or pop can get access to music from around the world. It is a mutually gratifying world for both the VJs and RJs who are making their livelihood by anchoring and organizing live music shows on the television and radio as well as for the viewers/audience who are mostly of younger age group and make specific request for a pArticular song or a set of songs and music.

While today viewers/audience of these live music shows have noticed that whether it is classical, western, jazz, rock or pop albums that they play, they have a quintessential knowledge of beats and different forms of music. However, many of the v iewers/audience would also be curious to know how they handle various hardware equipment or work on different specialized software while playing their favorite numbers live.

While the critical components of radio broadcasting operations include an audio mixer, scheduler and playback system, these days the tech-savvy Radio Jockeys mostly use powerful digital music players for FM Radio programs. With such equipment, they ensure gapless, continuous playing with intelligent mix point detection where music mixes and fades at the right point at the right time. With a host of high-end digital equipment, music is fully controlled, using the best Audio tools ever. Radio disc jockeys play music, chat, deliver news, weather, or sports, or hold conversations with celebrities or call-in listeners. Like Club DJs, they mix music, sound effects, and special effects and occasionally provide time-filling chatter between songs in technically equipped radio stations. Being extremely organ ized and synchronized is critical to the radio station, where songs fill a certain span of time and commercials are also aired during specific blocks. In most radio stations, computer software programs are used to schedule the music for each radio program or play listener requests. When DJs are off air, they might record commercials for later broadcast, preview new music and prepare material for later shows.

On the other hand, the advent of digital satellite and cable has brought greater diversity with Television channels such as MTV and Channel V, which focus on playing music videos and other music-related programming. With the explosion of MTV and MuchMusic in the 1980s and 1990s, music videos became a new Art form, a new way for an Artist or group to express their songs visually. After its advent in 1981, MTV stArted nonstop broadcasting of music-video clips intended to boost sales on the music chArts. With the coming of digital video editing, the VJs of these channels have used visual manipulations and effects in music- video clips. These days, many VJs even edit their material live on a computer, which could change and recompose the material in many ways. Some use found footage and other film material to tell their story, while others produce their own footage.

Today, after the a dvent of the Internet, live streaming music via the Internet radio stations have opened up new vistas of enjoying the melodies from all over the world. With a host of options ranging from shareware and freeware (designed to record streaming audio from online Radio stations) to webcasts and other Internet audio sources, the convergence of the Radio and Internet definitely mark the beginning of tremendous opportunities for the music aficionados.

50 Cents and His Rolls Royce Phantom

Real Name: Curtis James Jackson

Date of birth: July 6, 1975

50 Cent (a.k.a. Fifty or Fiddy as pronounced in African American Vernacular English, born Curtis Jackson on July 6, 1976 in Queens, New York), is a popular African American hip-hop artist. Once almost unknown outside his hometown of southside Jamaica, Queens, he is currently signed to Eminems record label Shady Records and Dr. Dres Aftermath Entertainment. The rapper, who was the first to sign to Shady Records, was scouted before knowing Eminem. Eminem first encountered 50 Cent with MTV News reporter Sway Calloway; Eminem apparently had not heard any of 50 Cents performances before seeing him in person. He appeared on the 8 Mile soundtrack with an accompanying song and video (Wanksta) that immediately went into heavy rotation on BET, MTV, and radio stations across the country. In the opinion of many observers his continued success seems guaranteed by his large underground fanbase and the street credibi lity he has gained by appearing on almost every major mix tape sold in New York in the past few years.

Early Life

Curtis Jackson never knew his crack cocaine-addicted father, and his mother, a bisexual Queens drug dealer working under Fat Cat, was murdered when Jackson was only eight years old. Her death had a major impact on Jackson, the degree of which is speculated over by fans, and her sexuality also played a key part in Jacksons emotional growth, which he would later reference in the song Hate It or Love It off The Games album The Documentary), Comin up, I was confused, my momma kissin a girl/ Confusion occurs, comin up in a cold world. The same song also contains a mild indictment of his fathers absence, Daddy aint around, probably out committin felonies.

After his mothers death, Jackson ended up living with his grandparents, where as a teenager he became immersed in the local drug trade. Hustling around his native Jamaica, Queens neighborhood, Jackso n went by the name of Boo Boo. It was during this period of distributing narcotics that Jackson met fellow Queens native Tony Yayo, who would later become a member of Jacksons G-Unit group. In June of 1994, Jackson was arrested on felony drug charges. Being a second time offender, Jackson was able to plead out of significant prison time by accepting seven months in a shock incarceration boot camp. He would later boast about this period as his doing seven to nine.

He became a father to a son, Marquise in 1997. Jackson met up with Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC fame and was signed to his label JMJ. Jay taught him the basics and then 50 left the label in search of someone who could help him achieve his dream of rap stardom. He teamed up with the hip-hop production duo Track Masters who recognized 50 Cents talent for incisive lyrics and signed him to Columbia Records in 1999. Although he looks back on this time with displeasure (his biography refers to it as being locked up in the studio), the 18 days spent in a studio in Upstate New York produced 36 tracks which later became his breakthrough album Power of the Dollar. How to Rob, the humorous ode to robbing a slew of industry rappers (Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Busta Rhymes (Flipmode Squad), various members of the Wu-Tang Clan, even Track Masters, and many more) was an instant hit for New York radio. Power Of The Dollar was never released, due to his shooting in 2000 and Columbia Records executives decided to drop him, claiming the shooting was negative publicity.

His Car

In the world of hip-hop, Cars maketh the star, and there is no star bigger than 50 Cent at the moment. But Fifty aint happy with whats in his garage, and he has plans to turn the car world on its head, literally. 50 Cent is about to make his Rolls-Royce Phantom a drop-top, even before the company does the work for itself...

I just want something everybody else doesnt have, declares the megastar backstage at a one-off U K concert at Rockingham race track. He then unleashes a tidal wave of how and why he is going to butcher his Phantom. I dont care if it messes up the electrical system. The roof is gonna be gone. I want something more sporty. Im not an old man. Thats why I wanna chop the roof off it. Ill leave the TVs. They had TVs in the package I got. Its fully loaded. Ill leave everything thats in there. Ill just cut the roof off. Make it into a vertible.

The man to whom 50 will turn for this ultimate chop-top is Funkmaster Flex, New York car artiste to the rap stars. The Bronx-based customiser, 50 Cents motoring mentor and restorer of the singers 65 Chevy Impala and 84 Buick Regal has been trying to talk the megastar out of what some will regard as sacrilege.

I dont think is such a good idea and its going to end up costing him almost as much as the car, predicts the host of the Ride With Funkmaster Flex cult TV show. Rather than hack the roof off the Phantom, Flex thinks it w ould be better to try and buy a production example of the stunning 100EX convertible concept car when it goes on sale in 2007. An idea 50 is having none of.

They wont give me one, he tuts with the air of a petulant teenager. Having me drive a Rolls-Royce is great for [promoting the company, but they dont see eye to eye with the kid yet.

50 (I have been warned not to call him Mr. Cent!) is flexing his considerable muscles. Less than three years since being drop-kicked to the top of the hip-hop parade with a plug from Eminem, 50 is enjoying the power of fame and spending a $100 million fortune which would run many a small country.

Fame and fortune has come at a price. In 2000, Curtis James Jackson III was shot outside his grandma New York house. Now there are more bullet wounds in his body than fingers on one of his blinged-up diamond-encrusted hands. One 9mm shell even went through his front teeth. Every time he grins I try and spot it. So far I have failed.

Choosing Your First Guitar: A Beginner's Guide

Picking out what you want for your very first guitar is a difficult and tricky choice. You probably do not know a lot about guitars to begin with, and with the thousands of selections available, it is easy to be confused.

The first decision involves choosing between either an electric or acoustic guitar. Once you have made that choice, the next thing you have to do is to determine the budget that you are comfortable with. If you are really serious about learning, it is recommended that you avoid buying a cheap and low-quality instrument, as such guitars tend to impede your learning. When it comes to upgrading, you will also find that getting a good price for your guitar will be difficult.

Typically, acoustic guitars have six strings, are hollow and have a sound hole. Electric guitars are not hollow, and require a guitar amplifier. However, electric guitars may be easier for beginners, because the strings are easier to press down, and do not cause your fi ngers to get sore as easily as compared to playing on an acoustic guitar.

One of the most important factors that you have to consider, when choosing between an acoustic or an electric, is what kind of music will you be playing. If you like to learn how to strum your favourite songs, an acoustic guitar may be better. If you are a great fan of rock music, then you might like to stArt off with an electric guitar. This is important, because if you stArt off with the wrong kind of guitar, you will find it much more difficult to find the motivation to play regularly.

How to Start Up a FM Radio Station

Whether you are looking for information on how to start up a FM radio station that operates on a low power FM basis, operates on a full power frequency or alternatively streams on the internet, it is essential to first establish what the options available to you are. It is also important to understand the process for obtaining a frequency, what the licensing requirements are, and also what type of FM Broadcasting equipment and studio gear you will need to run the radio station.

The following is a brief outline of some of the options that may be available. Please that not all options may be available in all countries, as license conditions do vary.

When it comes to how to start up a FM radio station, one of the options is low power FM. This type of radio station operates at lesser p ower than commercial stations and so they cover a smaller area. The exact area they will cover is dependent on terrain and the exact amount of power you are permitted. Again depending on the country you live in, the low power FM service may enable you to broadcast anywhere near from 500mW to 100W, and may be license-free or alternatively it may be licensed. This level of power is sufficient to cover anywhere between a radius of a few kilometres to several kilometres.

Another option is operating a full power licensed radio station. This type of frequency will give station maximum coverage and will enable you to reach as many listeners as possible. Depending on the country you live in, there can frequently be provisions to operate on a full power frequency, but either on a commercial, non-commercial or educational basis. However, operating a full power FM radio station can be a somewhat complicated process - especially during the initial stages of determining whether the re are frequencies available in your area and also costing the equipment that is needed. If you want to start up a full power FM radio station, then it is essential to get expert guidance at the earliest stage. This will ensure you get the information you need to make an informed decision.

If these options don't appeal or are not available in your area, you have one other method for how to start up a FM radio station. You are able to establish a station that streams on the internet. It will be available to a worldwide audience and can stream in your choice of format. Common formats include Winamp and Windows Media Player, although generally we recommend the latter as most people won't need to download any additional software to listen to your station. This type of radio station can use a great deal of bandwidth, so it is important to have a fast speed internet connection with a high data cap limit.

When it comes to choosing the type of station you will set up, o ne of the most common constraints is budget. That said, it has been proven that a station can start out on a low power FM basis and successfully make the transition to operating a full power licensed commercial FM radio station. Some of the points to consider when looking how to start up a FM radio station include:

- The process for obtaining an FM frequency and what to look out for

How many Watts you will need to achieve the broadcast coverage you want

What your obligations will be when it comes to music royalties

- What specialist services you need before to assist you in submitting your application for a frequency

What is the most appropriate powered transmitter and what type of antenna would be needed

The type of radio automation software that will be used

Creating A (Virtual) Free Bollywood MP3 Download Site

My niece loves Indian films and Indian film Music. To her, as to most of the world, this exuberant, colorful, romantic and just-plain-fun genre is summed up in one word: Bollywood.

I confess that I've become taken with Bollywood as well, though not to the same extent as my niece, who owns a number of Indian movies and regularly rents others. The Bollywood well is so deep that I have to confine myself to watching those few of its productions that bubble up to catch the attention of American movie reviewers. Otherwise I would be lost in Indian ocean of unfamiliar movie titles, actors and actresses.

My niece also collects CDs of Bollywood Music. There's an Asian market near her home that offers a cornucopia of them. But she has the same problem choosing CDs to buy that I do deciding which Bollywood movie may be worth my time. Unless she's seen the film from which a soundtrack derives, she's usually in the dark as to whether a particular CD's songs and artist s are ones she will enjoy.

At her request, I set up a way for her to preview a variety of Bollywood songs and even to live with them on her iPod for a while, all for free. This way she can make informed decisions about which CDs she ultimately purchases.

First, I searched for Indian Music Web sites, and specifically for those devoted to Bollywood, or at least modern popular Music (as opposed, say, to classical Indian ragas). I found several good ones, with names such as Bollywood World and India FM.

Most of the Web sites I found offered song samples, meaning 30-second or 1-minute snippets. Some had full Audio streams that allowed the visitor to listen to continuous Bollywood Music for as long as she or he might want. It was these latter that provided the first half of our solution.

Normally, streaming Audio, such as what you hear over an Internet Radio station, cannot be saved or downloaded. New software, though, makes it possible to record the stream to your hard drive for replaying as often as you like.

Even better, some of the newest Audio capture software incorporates something called an Mp3 splitter. This software is able to break the Audio stream into separate Mp3 song files. By the way, this is perfectly legal, because you're simply recording a broadcast, the same as when you record a TV show on your VHS. Voila -- we had the second half of our solution.

Between the Audio streams and splitter/recording software, we created our own virtual Bollywood Mp3 download sites.

Now whenever my niece is in a mood to explore the latest tuneful offerings from Bollywood, she clicks on her favorite Indian-Music Internet Radio station, then starts the recording software. Pretty soon she has enough Bollywood Mp3s to shuffle through for the rest of the week, and she's almost guaranteed to find two or three that will spur her to make a trip to the CD bin down at the Asian store.

Marc Gunn's Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers Is Purrrrfectly Amusing

Love Irish Music? Love Cats? Curl up in your favorite chair - Irish Drinking Songs For Cat Lovers by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats will tickle your Feline fancy.

Irish Drinking Songs For Cat Lovers is the pet project by Marc Gunn, singer-songwriter and one-half of the award-winning duo, the Brobdingnagian Bards. Full of funny Feline Folk Music, Irish Drinking Songs For Cat Lovers gathers popular drinking tunes and retrofits them with Cat-worthy lyrics. The result is a warm and wonderful CD that sees songs such as Lord of the Dance redone as Lord of the Pounce.

Why take Irish drinking songs and rewrite them with lyrics about Cats? Well, I was a big fan of Weird Al growing up, confesses Gunn, himself owned by two Cats named Tiziano and Torre plus visiting rights with the tabby Jasper, from a previous relationship. When I listen to a song too often, I typically will change the lyrics. I did that with 'Wild Rover,' changing the claps to meows. It was all do wnhill from there.

The CD is also not just Irish drinking songs, Gunn points out. It's more like a traditional Irish CD with a combination of drinking songs and Irish tunes, except the chief instrument is an autoharp and I sing about Cats.

That is the beauty of Irish Drinking Songs For Cat Lovers - the songs are part of the patchwork of American Music, a culture with deep Irish roots. Marc Gunn has extensive experience as not only a recording Musician but as a veteran performer in renaissance fairs and fantasy festivals. The result is a clever collection of Music that appeals to not only Irish and Cat lovers, but anyone who appreciates a lyrical laugh.

Japan's Ari Koinuma, also a Cat lover, produced Irish Drinking Songs For Cat Lovers. Participating Musicians include Hannah Gunn and Cedric the Fiddler of the Bedlam Bards. Additional Musicians include Chris Buckley, Sarah Dinan, Hamby, April Porter, Blake McCaig, and Franco Bordoni. Marc Gunn wrote all the l yrics to the classic songs.

Marc Gunn is an Irish and Scottish Folk singer with a strange affinity for Celtic ballads, drinking songs and Cats. He is the lead singer for the Brobdingnagian Bards. He is also Celtic Music podcaster and Irish Music magazine publisher and promoter. Last but not least, he is poet, photographer and Music business eduCator.

Jimi Hendrix

In 1960s there was an R&B wave. Little Richard and Isley Brothers were the most popular Musicians. Jimi did not feat in their company and couldnt fully realize his potential.

Hendrix moved to New York in the mid-'60s, making waves in various clubs while hooking up with Blues rocker John Hammond, Jr.'s band. While playing in a club one night, Animals bassist Chas Chandler approached Hendrix. Convincing Hendrix to move to London, Chandler became his manager and worked with him on his first solo gig. Bringing drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding on board, the Jimi Hendrix Experience was born.

The Experience incorporated R&B and soul and melded those Sounds into an eclectic pop variation of psychedelia just coming onto the scene. The London Music scene in 1967 was exploding and so did Hen drix with his debut Album, Are You Experienced? Hendrix took Guitar playing to another level with songs like Purple Haze, Hey Joe and The Wind Cries Mary. Hendrix quickly jumped to the forefront of Music. While each of those songs put Hendrix into the UK Top 10, they indirectly earned him a top spot at the Monterey Pop Festival in the United States later that year. Hendrix commanded everyone's attention while he played his Guitar behind his back and over his head. His Guitar wanderings incited a degree of spiritual hysteria, especially for the Musician himself. He'd finger his Guitar and then set it on fire, praying to the Guitar gods who blessed him with his unbelievable craft.

Everyone from Music moguls to teenage kids was taken by Hendrix's experimentation. Not since the likes of Eric Clapton or Pete Townshend had a young Musician been able to take off on a stage. He'd use distorted riffs, mind-blowing feedback and heart-thumping wah-wah pedals to make his Music spe ak to the crowd.

Hendrix would go on to record only two other full-length Albums before he died of a drug overdose in 1970 at the age of 27; Axis: Bold As Love and the double-LP Electric Ladyland---still just as mind blowing today as it was nearly 30 years ago. In the course of the few years before he died, Hendrix seriously experimented in Funk, Jazz and Mississippi Delta Blues, spending much time in the studio but never releasing an Album. From these sessions, producers posthumously culled Tracks and released Hendrix Albums, both live and studio.

Establishing Your Mix

Now that youve spent hours and days and weeks and months Recording your Musical masterpieces (and youve also read my article Tips for a Great Recording Session), you have arrived at my favorite time in the Studio; The Mixdown.

But dont think your job is done yet! The Mixdown is just as important as Recording. As an artist, you have to approach the Mixdown from an artists point of view and stay on the creative side of the fence where its still possible to shape and mold your Songs throughout the Mixdown process.

Remember the old Yin-Yang principle which states, whenever you turn something up, something else disappears. Furthermore; whenever you turn something down, something else gets louder. This applies to EQ, levels and almost anywhere you have two or more tracks.

The Beginning Of The End

STOP!! Dont even think about starting your Mixdown on the same day you finish tracking. Take a day off, have a break and then come back refreshed with a new pers pective.

Now back to business...

First of all, lets zero the board. This is simply the action of bringing all the faders to the bottom (-∞) and centering all the pan knobs and effects sends.

I know what youre thinking, youre thinking but our Mix sounded good when we were tracking!.

OK, but did the Mix actually sound good or were you just accustomed to hearing it that way? Thats why zero-ing the board is important. It flushes your memory and allows you to start from scratch. It might even be better to Mix a Song that you finished Recording a while back.

1.Get Kicked.

This is where I prefer to start. Other people like to start with the vocals and build around them. But Im more rhythm based and prefer to start with the kick drum.

One tricky part of any Mix is getting a good gain-stage structure where you dont clip the master faders at the end of your Mixing session when all your instrument faders are raised. We must be careful to keep watching the master bus clipping lights to make sure they never get into the red. Here is why the kick is a good place to start.

Play your Songs and watch the master bus VU meters. This is probably the only time you will Mix with your eyes. As youre watching the master VU meter, slowly raise the kick fader until the master meter reads about -7dB. If you are a four piece band, then you can leave the kick there and move on. But if you have a really dense tune, then you may have to lower the kick to -8dB or so (to leave room for all the other instruments as they come up).

Now you are set to Mix. The kick should be the only channel that you set levels by watching. Every other channel Mixed into the Song will be with your ears relative to the kick.

2.Moving On

From now on, its pretty much a free-for-all. Some people like to move on to the bass next, in order to find the balance for the low-end of the Song. Other people like to keep working on the drum kit as a whole before moving to other instruments. I prefer to move onto the drum kit over-head mics.

They say that a great drum kit sound can be captured using only two over-head mics, and a kick mic. And its true. Some of my tunes only use three mics on the final Mixed versions, even though we had used up to ten mics for the Recording of the kit.

If you placed your over-head mics properly (i.e.: so the snare sounds centered in the stereo image, and not skewed to the left or right speaker) then you will have a better stereo image of the drum kit when the Mix is finished. Otherwise you might have to do some fancy panning or EQ to get a balanced image with the drum kit.

You can now bring in the rest of the kit underneath the over heads to fill out the sound. I prefer to leave EQ and effects to the very end of the Mix, after all of the instruments are playing. Try to place your toms in the same panning position as the overhead mics recorded them. If your flo or tom in the overheads is to the right at 3 oclock then pan your individual floor tom fader to the same position.

And dont forget to check your phase between your mics pointing down and your mics pointing up.

3.Big Bottom

Now I like to add in the bass. Nothing too important here if you have good source audio. Im also a huge side-chaining fan. I LOVE to side-chain the bass with the kick so the low end frequencies wouldnt fight for space in the Mix. It just makes things sound tighter. Sometimes you may have to eq the lowest of the lows out of the kick in order to make a little more room for the bass to sit in the Mix.

4. Pads and More

Here is where I add the pad type of sounds. These are sounds that usually have longer sustains and hold the chords of the Song. Sounds like strings, sustained electric guitar chords, synth pads, and maybe even some rhythm acoustic guitars are great foundation instruments.

I like to lay these instruments on top of the drums and bass tracks we have already Mixed. You can get very creative with the panning of these sounds and create a wide stereo field. This will help make your Mix interesting by allowing your lead instruments and vocals sit in the center of your stereo image, attracting attention to themselves.

5. The Vox

Lets finally add the vocals. I usually start off with the lead vocal, and then place all the harmony and background vocals underneath the lead. Sometimes, you can end up putting the vocal a little too high in the Mix, and a great way to check this is to turn your monitors way down and listen to the Mix at an almost inaudible level. This way of listening to your Mix will surprise you, but you have to be confident and trust your ears. If something sounds disproportionately loud at this quiet level, then it is too loud. If you must, then you can compress the vocals too, but that really depends on the Songs style. Maybe a few fader rides are a better choic e then some static compression.

6. The Rest

You can start adding effects and other fancy shmancy things to your tune. Get funky with automating some pan knobs, fade-in some pads etc.. Here is a good time to get creative.

Its also a very good time to actively listen and re-adjust your Mix. Is the kick too loud? Should I put some higher frequencies on the bass? Should I compress the backing vocals more? Is the coffee finally ready?

When you feel you have a good Mix, burn it to CD and listen to it EVERYWHERE! In the car, in the bath, at home, on the TV set, at your friends place etc., and make a lot of notes. And at the end, if all your notes cancel out, then you are finished!

Internet Jams

Todays technology for the recording musician has been getting better and better with each passing month it seems. Software and computer interfaces are getting much less sophisticated and more user friendly for the average Joe. And,let's not forget, less expensive.

Software like Acid Pro 4.0 is what I use to create and upload music to the web. I've been using products from Sonic Foundry Sony) for 4 years now. Their software products are superb to say the least. I highly recommend this software to build your music creations.

Acidplanet is where I upload my music and Video for the whole world to see and hear. As a member, you can upload music and video files for free.

Software like Vegas Video (also made by Sonic Foundry-Sony), it is what I use to create music videos.

Now, dont get me wrong this is the software I use and recommend. There are many reliable programs out there to choose from.

I've been doing some online music collaborations as of late myself. This has been a great experience for me. However, as with anything else, there is a learning curve.

So... I thought I'd pass some simple tips that will help anchor you to a basic format you can stArt with.

These are common sense tips that I'm giving here and they work well if you follow this basic format everytime.

First, you need you find a website that has musicians who have the same interest you do. Yes, online music collaborations.

Musician Forum Boards are a great place to stArt. Here are just a few that will help get you stArted.

Guitar Noise Forums has recently created a page called, appropriately enough, Online Jams and Collaborations. Its pretty much a bulletin board where you can hook up with others who are interested in putting together an online jam, hosted by another site. You can join in on a jam or announce one of your own.

GuitarDuel.com is a site for guitarists of all ability levels to display their work. The best pArt is that it's free to join, but we'll have weekly contests with real prize money, says site creator, Don Harrold.

The appeal of GarageBand.com is the unique way in which it uses the Internet to find talented new groups.

Artistopia is committed to building the ultimate end-all solution for music Artists, musicians, songwriters, and industry professionals to develop and do business in one spot. Armed with comprehensive membership plans, industry experts, expert technologist, business management, and solid online presence, Artistopia is leading the frontier in online Artist development.

Whenever a site such as these have a Forum Board, use them to find other Artist that have the same taste as you. I usually introduce myself right away after signing up. It doesn't take long until you find some really cool musicians that are more than willing for an online collaboration. Acidplanet.com is where I upload my tunes.

Once I get on the Forum Board, I'll look for topics of discussions. Songwriting Topics, Recording Topics etc. This is where you'll find folks to collaborate with.

A great why to stArt is by taking a consensus. Throw the idea out there with some guidelines established. Remember, it's all in the approach. Then, folks need to hear what you are working on first, just to find out if it's something they can get into...

My first collabs were done by posting backing tracks for others to download and do their own thing with..

Some of the top players on AP really had a good time with that, and it grew into something way beyond what I intended. Very cool

You can do the same thing by building the backing track, and listing the lyrics you want in the song description.

You'll probably get a lot more folks involved if you let them post the songs on their own pages too...

To collaborate with others takes time. Just being vague and asking for a collaboration will probably not get very many responses. Having your ideas laid out before hand would probably get more responses. Most good musicians I know are looking to be challenged a little when it comes to making music. Remember, it's got be worth while I'm sure.

Any collaboration is a community effort between people, with equal input and pArticipation throughout the project.

A great approach would be to post a subject idea for a group project, discuss ideas posted by pArticipating members on that subject, and come to a consensus on:

1. What the outline of the song should be (genre, instrumentation, time signature, tempo, key, section layout of verses/choruses/bridges/solos).

2. Which people will contribute what pArts and instruments

3. Where the finished pArts of each collaborator will be uploaded to

4. Who is responsible for collecting/mixing/mastering the pArts

5. A timeline for when pArts need to be done to keep the project moving smoothly

6. What profile the song will be uploaded to

7. A project head to oversee the entire process and make sure things are running smoothly, communication is consistent and informative, and every pArticipant is included equally in the project.

Hope these tips and guidelines help you get you on the right track.

Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Oboe Playing Now!

10. Ask another oboist to play duets with you, or schedule an informal chamber music reading with whomever you know within the next few days.

You can learn a whole lot (mostly about yourself) by listening and playing with others. Playing with other oboists or instruments forces you to LISTEN, which is perhaps the most important skill of all.

9. Soak some cane, make a reed in 5 minutes and then force yourself to practice on it today.

Being able to make Oboe reeds quickly is a great skill to develop for any oboist. Knowing you are only minutes away from a playing Oboe reed will lower your stress level and ensure that you wi ll have a steady supply of practice reeds.

8. Trade Oboe reeds with a friend and teach each other something.

While you might not be able to play a concert on a friends Oboe reed, you can certainly learn a thing or two by studying how they make their reeds and how they adjust the reed to suit their personal taste.

7. If youre in a reed rut (or even if youre not) order a reed or two.

Buying reeds (even if you make them) is a great way to get a different perspective on reedmaking.

6. Record yourself practicing-and then listen to it, taking notes.

Just like hearing a recording of your voice for the first time, li stening to a recording of your playing can be an eye opener. Once you get over the shock of hearing EXACTLY how you sound to others, you will soon realize the importance of this simple exercise. Whats the biggest benefit? Over time, the productivity of your practice sessions will go through the roof.

5. Spend the next half hour playing long tones.

There are endless long tone exercises to choose from (check out our practice book in our store for specific exercises), but be sure that you take time everyday to work on this most important of skills. Playing and practicing long tones will do more for developing your Oboe playing skills than almost any other practice exercises.

4. Play a mock audition or a mock recital for some of your friends tonight.

Playing an Oboe audition or recital can be quite a harrowing experience for most people, so it is smart to get in the habit of practicing these skills before the big day. Giving mini-recitals or mock auditions will help you develop ways to control your nerves and make sure you are still able to communicate your music when the pressure is on.

3. Teach a younger student; youll be teaching yourself at the same time.

Someone once said, You never truly know something until you teach it. And so it goes with the Oboe. Teaching someone else is the best way to ingrain things in your head. You benefit and your student does as well.

2. Get out that metronome and start double-tonguing again.

You never know what type of crazy conductor will be in the drivers seat the next time you have to play La Scala. If she is a speed demon, your double-tonguing skills will come in handy. Its not the most interesting thing in the world to practice, but it will come in handy time and time again.

1. Take a day off from practicing and live life!

Apart from practicing, the best way to improve your music skills is to live life. Musicians communicate little bits of who they are through their music. With this being the case, try to make those little bits as interesting as possible. Get out, see the world, meet new people It WILL improve your Oboe playing. Guaranteed.

Guitars: How To Choose The Right One

Guitars are very different. There are a number of different choices that you can make. All of them range in quality, sound, and abilities. And, when you need to reach for that Guitar, you need to make sure that what you have is the best that is available. There are several key factors that you need to have when it comes to selecting the right Guitar. Doing so will allow you to get the best performance and ability out there.

The biggest thing that you need to keep in mind is what type of music youll be using the Guitar to play. There are many Guitars that are versatile but some are better suited for certain styles. For example, for rock music, youll need to go with an electric Guitar. If you are a beginner, choose a smaller, less expensive version and then work your way up. To keep prices low, choose plywood Guitars over solid wood or go for a second hand Guitar until you get the basics down. Then move up the ladder.

You will likely need to purchase an amplifier if you choose an electric Guitar. In some cases, youll find a great deal to help you to get a good price. Make sure that you try it out by plugging the Guitar into the amp before you make the purchase.

Other things that you need to keep in mind when making your Guitar purchase include your level of experience and your budget. If you are really serious, it is great to go for the all frills package, but if you are just starting out and are not sure of it all just yet, save your money. You should also keep in mind that your education in Guitar lessons should be more important than the Guitar because that is what is going to be seen by your adoring fans.

A great way to save money on the Guitars that you can purchase is to do it on the web. Shopping, comparing and buying online can save you a good deal of money. With that money, you can get that many more lessons under your belt. And, when it comes to availability of the Guitar that you want, that is going to happen on the web too. Guitars should suit your music.

How To Choose Your First Microphone For Your Recording Studio

So you have decided to buy a studio microphone? The first notion I'd like to shoot down is the studio microphone myth. There is no such thing as a studio microphone. A microphone will pickup sound anywhere you put it. It doesn't have to be a recording studio. It can be a kitchen. Granted, some mics are less durable than others and these mics tend to be used more in the studio than on stage simply because everything is abused live.

The second myth I'd like to shoot down is the idea that mics have special features. There are no guitar mics. There are no vocal mics. There are no drum mics (except for maybe those tom mounting gadgets that I don't really recommend because of poor mic placement options). All mics pick up sound. You can use a mic that some may consider a vocal mic on a kick drum. You can do the same with guitar. In the end, all mics have a certain sound. You can use them however you see fit. There are no rules.

Regardless of budget, no microphone gets used more in my home recording studio than a Shure SM 57. Yes, I have a $2500 Soundelux U99 tube Condenser microphone. I have a Royer R121 ribbon microphone, but in my studio the Shure SM 57 gets use the most often. So with that being said, if you don't have at least 2 SM 57s, don't read any further. I'd bet that half the cds you own (or more) use an SM 57 on snare top and electric guitars. All these major label cds can't be wrong, can they? In fact, I've heard stories about a number of major label singers insisting on a Shure SM 57.

While the Shure SM57 gets use the most out of all the microphones in my recording studio, it's not right for everything. I wish it was. It's much cheaper than some of my other microphones. You have to understand that microphones are more li ke colors than anything. If you don't have the right color, than you will have problems. The perfect mic for the job will sound great. The wrong mic for the job will require EQ and still probably never sound right.

Your second mic could be a number of different microphones. It's recommended that you choose a microphone that sounds much different than an SM 57. A good choice might be a Audio Technica AT 4050. This mic can be pretty good on vocals. It's pretty bright. On some singers I've knocked the high end down quite a bit. (Actually, after using an AT4050 long enough, I decided I wanted a duller Condenser mic. Ironically, dull costs about 5 times as much). The truth is I don't use my AT 4050 all that much, but I think it would be a nice opposing color to your SM 57.

You have t o remember that the more mics you have, the less you use each one, normally. That's actually the whole point. If you have 100 mics and you know and understand each one inside and out, when it comes to micing up a giving source, you are much more likely to get exactly the right tone without the use of EQ. When you have 2 mics, this is much more difficult. Of course, you've got to be in it for the long haul to need 100 mics. Another great choice is a used AKG 414. They cost closer to $1000 brand new, but you can usually snag one for half that.

In the end, no one can pick a mic for you. You may hate all of my suggestions. Make sure you buy your equipment from a store that allows you to try a mic out. If you don't like a piece of gear, you are stuck with it. Do not believe articles like this.... believe your ears!

How to Buy a New Guitar

So, you want to know how to buy a new guitar. Whether you are just learning to play the guitar or you've been playing for some time, choosing to buy a new guitar can be one of the most exciting experiences.

You will soon learn that people have their own opinions about the type of new guitar to buy. You will need to consider what is important to you. In addition, learning how to buy a new guitar is similar to buying a new pair of shoes. They are better once they have been used a bit.

In guitar terms, they need to have a good setup.

There are essentially three types of Guitars on the market: electric, acoustic, and classical. You can also find acoustic Guitars that have pickups. These are properly called acoustic-electric Guitars.

If you're are just learning to play the guitar you may be interested in purchasing a brand new guitar instead of a used one. You may think that there is much more trouble associated with purchasing a used guitar.

You shouldn't have to worry about the general condition, but there are some tips for how to buy a new guitar that can save you a headache and point you in the right direction.

Getting Your Money's Worth

One aspect of new Guitars that you will learn quickly---they're not cheap. As with anything you buy, the highest price doesn't necessarily correspond to the best. When you are considering how to buy a new guitar, the best deal that you want to secure is one where you get a quality guitar with the lowest prices possible. Quality in terms of the guitar relate to its construction and tone.

When you look at the construction, notice the wood that is used. Inspect the entire guitar and look for peeling or chipping. Also look closely to notice the shape of the Guitars. Guitars are typically kept in storage areas.

If a guitar spends a significant amount of time in such an area, it is very possible t hat the wood may become affected so that the instrument loses its shape. Now that you are learning how to buy a new guitar, you will be able to tell the difference in a new guitar that is worth its price tag and one that is not.

Checking the Action

If there is one aspect of Guitars that separate them from each other, it's tone. Another tip for how to buy a new guitar is to refrain from judging a guitar simply by its looks alone. You need to take it down from the shelf and listen to its tone. If you are just learning to play, you don't have to worry that you don't know enough to test out the tone. You can tell if a guitar has good tone by simply strumming a few strings on it. Action is an important thing to check as well.

Action refers to the amount of space between the strings and the fretboard.

When you play a note, you have to press down on the strings so that they touch the fretboard. If there is too much space between the string and the fretboard, the action is considered high. If there is very little space between the two, the action is considered low. Either extreme can affect your guitar playing. You want to aim for an action that is somewhere in the middle.

The tips presented here are only a few to show you how to buy a new guitar. The more time you spend talking to other guitar enthusiasts you will learn more about new Guitars.

Kids Love Harmonica Songs

Children love listening to music. If they want to learn how to play the harmonica you can consider yourself lucky. It is very beneficial for children to learn harmonica songs. Don't be afraid that if your kid learns one song it will be limited on the other types of music that exist. Harmonica songs are suitable for just about any event and occasion. Harmonica songs have a lot of style, so if your children learn to play even one song it teaches them so many other things. Probably the first thing that you learn when playing the harmonica is eye hand coordination. Children over the age of 3 can stArt learning how to play the harmonica and those kids who have 8 years of age or more can stArt taking lessons.

When they have this age they can control their diaphragm and stArt playing the songs they know. Back in the 17th century cowboys used their harmonicas to entertain themselves and others, as well. They sang wonderful harmonica songs like Red River Valley and Clementine while crossing the plains. Let your kids try that. Of course, they might be not keen on playing wild over western themed harmonica songs but there are many other styles they can choose from. They can try Westphalia Waltz or even polka songs.

If your child is interested in playing the harmonica, it is best if you buy them a diatone harmonica for a beginning. It has only ten holes and is much easier to use than the others. ApArt from that, the diatone type is much cheaper in price as it costs about $50.00 or a bit more. After your children have some experience playing the diatone harmonica you can get them a chromatics one which is more complicated. Minor keys are played by sliding a bar and this also rouses the sounds as well. After some practicing your children will be able to call themselves harmonica masters.

If you'd like to help your child with the harmonica lessons you can buy sheet music. However, it is best if you give your child some books which tell him with simple graphics and show him how to play a certain song. Of course, it is true that if you want to play more complicated chromatics style you should know how to read traditional sheet music. You can order sheet music or graphic style instructions from most music stores or over the Internet. You can purchase harmonica song s for a few cents or a couple of dollars.

If we know how to play a musical instrument we can express our feelings through our music. This is the best way for your children to say what they feel. It is generally true that music helps children deal with life issues. However, playing the harmonica has one great advantage not mentioned so far, it is that it can be put in your pocket and you can always bring it with yourself, so you can always play a harmonica song whenever you feel like doing it.

The Seven Best Sources of Basic Guitar Lessons and Guitar Learning Techniques

You're a beginner, and you want basic guitar lessons to stArt you off. But you're confused by all the choices: which would be the best guitar learning technique?

Guitar lessons are like anything else: there are two ways of learning, and they're not the hard way or the easy way, nor are they my way or the highway. No, they're teach yourself, or get a teacher.

Let's look at teachers first. They come in four guises, and some are more effective than others. The more effective, the more expensive--usually.

The cheapest and probably least effective guitar lessons you can get are from a friend. I don't say that to be disrespectful to anyone's playing abilities, but simply to point out that unless that friend plays by the book and is a qualified teacher, you'll probably pick up any bad habits they hav e. They're also not likely to be available to give guitar lessons on a regular basis, and may either become impatient when you don't pick things up fast enough, or may just let things slide, allowing you to form bad habits of your own. So your basic guitar lessons will remain just that--basic. The cost is good, though--usually nothing.

You may be fortunate enough to be still at school with guitar lessons available there. If so, take them. You'll get a qualified teacher, weekly classes, and fellow pupils to swap notes with (and maybe even get together to play with!) after your guitar lessons.

Night school is the next most effective and cheap source. It differs from school because you have to make the effort to go after a day's work. That usually means you've other things going on in your life--things that may intrude. Not only that, class size will probably be large, so you'll have less input about what you want to learn. And there's usually only two levels--basic guitar lessons, then improvers. The cost as an hourly rate will be very reasonable, though.

A professional teacher is the most expensive option. A good one will bring out the best in you, may encourage you to take grades, but will get frustrated if you don't practice. If you have money, time, and are prepared to put the work in, this is one of the most effective routes to take, because they'll correct any bad habits, and your guitar lessons are one-to-one. Obviously, you can save a little if you get your basic guitar lessons at, say, night school first.

If you can't afford a professional teacher, and you don't have evening/school classes or a friend handy, the second guitar learning technique is to teach yourself. You've three possible options.

You can buy guitar tutors fairly cheaply at most guitar shops, or online. They used to come in book form, but increasingly incorporate CDs and DVDs. There's a one-off cost, non-refundable, and you progress at your o wn pace.

Once you've got past the basic guitar lessons in these tutors, you might decide the best way to teach yourself is to play your favourite songs by ear. So you listen to them over and over, work out the chords, then play. The advantage of this technique is that it'll give you confidence, and if you mess up, no one will know. It's also cheap--presumably you've already paid for the music.

Also, there are fan sites online where you can download lyrics and sheet music to your favourite songs, thus saving you the time of doing it yourself.

Finally, there's the online course. For the cost of a few guitar lessons with a professional teacher you can get a course aimed at your level of proficiency. There are anything from basic guitar lessons online to advanced jazz. The courses usually come with a money-back guarantee, too, which is not true of the other methods. Another advantage is that you learn whenever it's convenient--teachers are available only at cer tain times of the day.

So there you have it--the seven basic guitar lessons sources: a friend, school lessons, night school, a professional teacher, a book or course, learning by ear, or an online course.

Which is best?

Depends on how serious you are, how much time you can devote to practice, and what you want to achieve.

If you're just stArting, it might be best to go for the cheapest, most basic guitar lessons you can. That way, if you don't persevere, you haven't lost much.

If you do persevere, and you want to get really good, you'll eventually want to consider a professional teacher.

Wherever you want your journey to take you, I hope you get there and have fun travelling!

Stop Playing Piano the Hard Way!

Let's face it. Learning isn't usually fun. It's a big drag.

Especially when it comes to learning a Musical instrument. Scales, repetition, and monotonous exercises abound. Most people love the Piano but won't go near it for fear of not being able to to play it. And most times, their fear is justified!

A typical beginning Piano student scenario may go like this: You walk into the teacher's studio. He or she asks you what you want to learn. You respond with any number of choices; classical, jazz, new age. Then out pop the books. You know the one's I'm talking about. Hanon scales, Czerny. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll get introduced to a chord-based method. Maybe. But probably not.

You see, most Piano teachers have this idea that you must learn how to read Music before you can play Music. That's nonsense!

In fact, it really works the other way around. You should be able to make Music with chords and improvise first. Why? Because Music is what the end r esult is. Music is not notes on a sheet of paper. It's hammers striking strings produced when a pianist fingers a chord. Children speak their native language first before they learn how to spell and write it. They have no difficulties doing this BECAUSE IT COMES NATURALLY! Music should be the same way! We learn the language of Music by understanding how to use chords first. We then use these chords to create our Music with.

There is nothing wrong with being able to read Music, but if that's all you can do, you're limiting yourself creatively. Stop playing Piano the hard way and learn how to use chords and improvise first. Because by learning how to improvise, you are actually speaking the language of Music first!

Hip Hop's Top 3 Producers Of All Time

In most realms of the Entertainment industry a producer's main job is to make sure the finish product is more or less polished and ready for the mass media. The music industry at a certain time was no different. Recently, the role of the producer has become a lot larger and in some regards has stArted to include some of the duties that were primarily relegated to other notable positions. Twenty years ago when an Artist was about to stArt a recording project they would hire a producer who would then be in charge of booking studio time and finding the right songs and back up singers to fit this Artist style. Their final duty was to pick which of the finished songs should make the Artist's album. Skip forward to present day hip hop and you'll see that a producer in most cases is not only the song writer but in a lot of cases the recording engineer as well. They write and produce the song from its inception to its final cut. Hip Hop has coined the t erm super producer and any producer who makes it to this elite level makes no less then $50,000 for each song they sell. In most cases the producer is even more vital to the success of a song than the Artist who is recording the song. Below is a list of the top 5 producers in hip hop.

Teddy Riley - When you single handedly create a new sound you have to be considered one of the all time greatest. In the late 80s Teddy Riley created a sound known as the New Jack Swing which had Artist lining up to hire him for his services. He was responsible for creating hit songs for Bobby Brown, Guy and Black Street. Teddy Riley is universally regarded as the first super producer.

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis - This duo is also known for a unique sound that they created in the early 80s! Creating hits for notable Artists such as Janet Jackson, New Edition and Whitney Houston to name a few. The unique sound they developed while growing up along side Prince in Minneapolis Minnesota is credited for many of the hits in the 80s and 90s.

Dr. Dre - When it comes to the rap side of hip hop music there's no debating the credentials of Dr. Dre. As one of the founding fathers of gangster rap in the early 90s this hip hop legend created a sound that to this day has never been duplicated. The fact that he charges $500,000 to $1,000,000 a song should say it all. I don't think you can name any hip hop Artist that hasn't enlisted the services of Dr. Dre. Known as a perfectionist, there may be no other producer responsible for as many hit records as Dr. Dre. From his earlier accomplishments in hip hop during the 90s to his present discography which include Eminem and 50 cent, Dr, Dre clearly stands head and shoulders above all other hip hop producers.

[SUSPECTED SPAM] The Twinkling Years Of Big Hats And Plenty Of Penguins

Folk Rock legends, Fleetwood Mac changed The face of this genre when They applied Themselves with The diversities of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in 1975. This young, talented, but fairly broke couple joined The group after The Bands long, established career with Christine Perfect (McVie) as The only female vocal. Domineering The Folk Rock world with Their bluesy sound mixed in with The sultry, low tones of Perfect up until this time. The Nicks/Buckingham outfit launched The group on a unsuspecting, wider audience allowing The alternative talents of The song writing duo to unfold.

In this album we find The very Greatest song writing accomplishments from this English/American Band up until The time of its release in 1988. Only a year after The incredible success of Their 87 album, Tango In The night, it was a wise decision to launch this Greatest Hits album with immense gusto on The public. Including Hits from Their white album in 1975 which was The debut album for Nicks and Buckingham up to Tango In The Night, it was a quick scan across The years of The full five member outfit. It was also The same year in which The master behind Their success, Lindsay Buckingham decided to leave to peruse a long awaited solo career which was only accepted with optimism by a limited audience. We saw The entry of Billy Burnett, son of The legendary fifties swooner, Johnny Burnett, and guitarist Rick Vito. These two well accomplished guitarists appear on The inside cover photograph with The remaining members of The Fleetwood Mac. It was a brief union with The two young men and after a tour, Fleetwood Mac went through a transition where They came to realise The great gap in Their creativity was The unusual, and departed, Lindsay Buckingham.

Presented in no chronological order, These tracks skim over The very tracks that paid Their bills. The highest ranking singles of that period are all here, although many Fleetwood Mac followers, myself incl uded, would argue that Their very best and most imaginative work is very much absent.

Perhaps, and I say this with in trepidation, The first track we hear on this fairly standard album is The very over rated Rhiannon. Marked in history as The single with The most haunting sound of Nicks croaky and witch like voice, it failed in my mind to have any lasting effect. I would have preferred to have seen The appearance of Gold Dust Woman, from The Rumours album. Firmly seating itself along The bench of mysterious, tribal drum based singles, it is still a favourite amongst Fleetwood Mac fans. Released originally in March 1978, it was not surprising that it failed to make any indentation at The time. Failing to even make The top forty, it now only has come into its own in recent years as being probably one of finest of Fleetwood Mac tracks. With its unmistakeable guitar riff at The opening, it reveals a tune that couldnt possibly be mistaken for anything else. For anyone lucky enough to have witnessed Them live, it was a chance where Nicks would perform The most gliding of dances across The stage covered in floating scarves. A trade mark which caught in quickly with The help of this record.

Undoubtedly, The most optimistic, feel good record by any artist in The twentieth century was Dont Stop. Lyrically born out of emotional break ups and fraught tensions among The members at The time, it appeals to anyone wanting to cheer up and look forward to better things. Fast, catchy and most sing able, this track it a welcomed relief after The minor keys of The previous song. Led, vocally by Buckingham, he wasnt The worlds Greatest singer, however, he could put his entire being into a song and chant it with vast amongst of energy and strength. It is just merely his vocals on this track that are endearing, fascinating and so full of happiness and hope that keep this jumpy, finger clicking track timeless and ageless. Even in The event of it failing to crack The top thirty in April 1977, it was uplifting enough to stay on our minds for decades to come.

The equally forward thinking, Go You Own Way, follows in hot pursuit on this album, continuing in a happy Theme. It is just as vibrant and glowing in its musical anThem. Very much, lyrically in The its over subject, it still holds us in that bright light of joyful wisdom. Stronger in lead, Buckingham sings a more powerful melody and The great agile chants are only left to The chorus. Including a spiralling guitar riff at The break, it is as definite and conclusive as its subject. Strangely, we remember that back in February 1977, we didnt think much of it. Scraping into The top forty as if no one was looking, it failed to amuse us enough to buy it. We find this hard to believe as this track, again, marks The dignity of The Band as well as proving Themselves to be craftsmen and professionals at Their work.

Winding down, we now take a glimpse at The strong vocal le d album, Mirage released in July 1982. The face of Transatlantic music was changing rapidly and this album showed us The path that Fleetwood Mac chose to follow. This track is a predominant piece of vocal led harmonies that was The very basis of The Mirage album. The thunderous instrumental qualities had been dropped, albeit briefly. In this track we find anoTher side to The Band. Not only were They all accomplished musicians, individually, but They could also come togeTher with immense tight knitted voices and use Themselves as The back bone of a song. Hold Me, was, in verse, a strong yet soft union of The voices of Buckingham and Christine (Perfect) McVie. Woven togeTher like voices of Siamese twins, this track is light, airy and laces electronic keyboards with acoustic guitar. Released in July 1982, it surprisingly failed to enter The chart successfully despite its unique production and perfectly formed vocal performance.

AnoTher of Their Hits (and I really cant sta nd that word) is Everywhere, taken from Their 1978 Tango In The Night album. Led by Christine McVie, her voice was just soft and graceful enough to carry this whispery tune. Atmospheric and mysterious, this track epitomised The essence of The Tango album. A slight right hand turn for The Band musically, it transported The Band firmly into The grasp of The young set. Released in April 1988, it towered over all at number four. The highest position for The Band since The arrival of Nicks and Buckingham. Dressed in swirling keyboards and a messy backing of The Bands vocals, it is unlike anything ever heard before its release.

Nicks, Gypsy, seems bland in comparison to The rest of this album so far, but as it sinks into our ears, we realise that it was just as much a atmospheric and polished piece as The oThers. Nicks crackled, country sounding vocal was as mysterious and as Celtic as The subject matter. She brought to The Band her ballet styled glides of dance to The stage and her fascination with witchcraft, fairies, ghosts and anything magical entwined her song writing capabilities. The musical backdrop was always just as fitting, as with this record. Released in September 1982, it sat at a miserable number 46. It was a pity but The public werent quite sure how to accept this occult style of song and sound.

Probably The best track on this album is The inclusion of a very little known song. As Long As You Follow, is led again by Christine who is in haunting heaven. This track baThes you in dreams and relaxes you with its soothing slide guitar giving it a touch of country and at The same time, it will dip you in melted chocolate. Allow this track to lap you with The waters of gentleness. The backing arrangements of The rest of The Bands voices will make you think that They quickly invented surround sound and multiplied vastly over night. Soft and sincere in its subject, it is a moving piece yet inoffensive. It is Fleetwood Mac proving t o us that at The time of this albums release, They could till pull a brand new rabbit out of The hat with ease. Released in November 1988 with an exceptional live cut of The Rock anThem, Oh Well, as its B side, it climbed raTher paThetically to number 66. Not fitting for The Yazz filled charts at The time of The late Eighties, it fell on deaf ears. It is within this set on this album, that it truly belongs and nestl4es in cosily very well.

The slightly up tempo-ed Say You Love Me, is a quick jaunt back to Christines days with Chicken Shack as The feel of this song is very much The same, (pre Fleetwood Mac for this singer/song writer) this track has been taken from The white album, of 1975. Stripped of all puff and fluff from The oTher tracks, this is certainly dated in its production yet it still stands The test of time as a song in itself. Piano based, Christine is at The keyboards and leads both The lead and The backing vocal. Slightly Folksy, it is a camp fire song, with lots of swaying and joining in. Simple in its subject, it is far from The same in its quality. Chirpy and reluctant to give us any more than it has to, it is a pretty, for want of a better termReleased in November 1976, it only managed number 40. All of These flat positions will come to The listener as a massive surprise. It will also make you wonder how on Earth this Band ever became as big, internationally as They did

The boring, whining Dreams, appears next, and one cant help but remember back to recent days when The Corrs literally took this song, ripped it into shreds and threw it around The studio a few times. Then allowing The bruises to show, They promptly released it as a single of Their own. It is still only The very fact that Nicks vocals of here, a very young, squeaky quality, that we still remark on this track as being ground breaking. Personally, it never did anything for meIn July 1977, it reached number 9, so we must have liked it at The time. All I know is that I was too young to buy records at The age of five.

Dancing our tango, we are thrown forward a decade as we are launched into Little Lies. Given The first class vocal treatment by Christine McVie, it is laced with The haunting backing vocal of Stevie Nicks. Full in its base drum beat and neatly decorated with tiny bells and dancing keyboards, juts The percussion element in this track was worth an Oscar. It is enchanting and provocative (but not as much as My Sharona by The Knack..) and it will cast a spell over you in The shape of a tall, lanky Mick Fleetwood shaking fierce looking Maracas and chanting..you will enjoy this record! Released in September 1987, it reached number 5.

Perhaps The most captivating song of The album is The ever distant Sara, (pronounced, Sarah) This track it a strong tribal drummed Theme that grows ever more cloudy and mysterious as The song continues. Stevies young, gypsy voice is swaThed in soft, whispered backing vocals led by Buckingham who was a man who could do feminine whispers one minute and bear like growls The next. Stevies voice trails off to much that you actually feel that shes walked away from The microphone and ground out of The building. She is practically standing outside in The street by The end of The song. I jest, but it is hard to capture this track in a simple piece of prose. It is to be listened to for its amazingly crammed in content. Fleetwood Mac very rarely leave any room left for more percussion improvement and this track is no exception. Released in December 1979, it went straight over our heads and landed itself at number 37. Perhaps it had been a little too deep and meaningful for us to really appreciate it.

Perhaps Tusk could break The hardened prog Rock audience of The mid Seventies wit h a bit more gusto. It certainly worked as we all rushed out to get this tribal motioned piece with its experimental brass section and whirling chants of muttering voices. It all sounds awfully like some extreme Yes piece, but somehow Tusk, cut The mark with us. The title came from, apparently, The word that Mick Fleetwood calls his manhood, for want of a better expression! First appearing on The double album of The same name in 1979, it shot straight to number one. Led, creatively by Buckingham, it gave us an insight to The future solo workings of The artist. He had, however, found his experimental behaviour slight clipped in The Band, thus prompting his departure in 1988. This track uses The same set up as some of The Beatles working for Sgt Pepper. Creating a back drop of crowds of voices, it chants its title at repeated moments. Released as a single in October 1979, it only reached number 6. Still, a piece of creative Mac and still treasured amongst fans.

Ending Th e set, Stevie gives us a performance that would have also suited one of her successful solo albums. Laced with The atmosphere of The members of Fleetwood Mac, it is still a strong Nicks piece. Most average music fans will find this track too middle of The road and too dull, yet Nicks fans (like myself) will be pleased with its appearance. It engages in The usual mass of swirling noise that became The back drop of The very flat and equally received 1990 album, Behind The Mask. This terrible album was about The worst composition that The Band had come up with so far. The event of Buckingham leaving was strong enough t o allow The creativeness of The Band to come crashing down to The ground. Any decent Fleetwood Mac fan will notice The disappearance of Buckingham in this track. It lacks The punch and The unique originality that Buckingham brought to The Band. However, it is fundamentally a Nicks track. Listeners may feel free to use this particular track as a taste of her solo work if already not experienced.

As with all Greatest Hits albums, one gets The impression that youre actually listening to The Band but only listening to The bits They want you to hear. Its a Hey, this was all our good stuff, so forget The bollocks we gave you in between, this is everything we want to be remembered for, and we are strapped for a little cash, so please feel free to buy this, even though our fans will have all of These tracks already It is this piece that I have chanting in The back of my mind when ever I see someone drudging out anoTher Hits album. Fleetwood Mac, I guess, for this time, could be forgiven as it was Their best release until almost ten years later with The Dance. It also marked, and celebrated The arrival home of Buckingham and Say You Will, followed in 2003, just after a wait for itanoTher Hits album.arrrrgggghhhh!!!!!

In conclusion, it is a record of all Their best single releases, but as you can see, those releases didnt amount t o much at The time. Personally, Their best work in The 1975 to 1988 period is very much missing. If you could possibly dig deeper into your pockets, Then The albums worth purchasing here are The very ones where These songs came fromor for those of you who are lazy and just want a brief history, Then you may, buy this one. It will guide you, although, quickly, through The life of Fleetwood Mac.
