Why Reggae

I have written articles before on Reggae Music but they were for the most part pretty much historical. They included information on where and how Reggae originated. Now, here is a bit about my obsession with this Music and why.

Reggae to me is not just a great beat or Music just to dance to. Many songs in the Reggae genre are spiritual in their sound and lyrics. Songs performed by artists such as Bob Marley, Luciano, Abijah, Garnette Silk, Dennis Brown amongst others consist of not simply great lyrics but a message. A message that inspires, motivates, and reminds us of the past and where we are coming from. If you have never gotten into this Music it is probably because you cant connect the lyrics or relate to the history of the people.

Growing up in Jamaica for me was not as hard as it was for those before me yet there were some challenges. Crime was always very present in our community and around the rest of the Island. Any country or city that has a corrupt government will see and experience crime. It was no different for Jamaica. Political unrest goes far back in our history and is still present. I believe that many of the artists who came out of Jamaica were politicians in their own right and they used their Music to fight for the people. They were partially inspired by pain and suffering. This is where I believe roots Reggae came from.

In contrast to the crime Jamaica is also full of religion whether Presbyterian, Anglican, Rastafarian, or other. Therefore, it is not unlikely that our Music would be influenced by worship as well. Some of the lyrics and even the instruments originated here.

So much of what I feel about this Music is of course based on my experiences. I would think that the easiest way to fall in love with this Music as I have is to at least visit the Island, speak to the people, and experience some of the culture. You can also visit Jamaica when Reggae Sunsplash or Reggae Sumfest is being held. This should give you a thorough lesson on Reggae Music.

ReelMusician Reel Artist Press Kit Design

After reviewing a myriad of artist demos, press kits and bios as a former talent booking agent with the William Morris Agency and founder of ReelMusician.com, Ive decided to write a short article on how you can formulate a workable and eye catching artist bio avoiding too much hype and grabbing the attention of the music industry. As the years have gone by and technology has increased, you would think that bios, press kits and other various articles written for an artist press kit would get better I believe it has gotten easier, but better Im still debating. There are fundamental truths and principles that you should incorporate into your press kit material if you really want to catch the eye of the industry professional and land some real success.

There are not as many fast or absolute rules as there are donts when creating your artist bio. I can tell you from experience, that the creation of an artist press kit is not as easy as one would think. Anyone can hav e their friend or another member of the act put together a press kit, but one that really sparkles and grabs the attention of your audience is the key Not just creating what everyone else is creating. Believe it or not, I tend to think that many industry execs dont even bother with the run of the mill artist press kits with CDs sent in with the barrage of mail received on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there are probably some very deserving bands in the pile, but if you dont catch their attention or are not conducting a polished approach to your material, then you can forget it incredible reel or not.

As we go along here, dont hesitate to contact ReelMusician.com should you have any questions on artist press kit design. Many articles, features, logo design work and free material are available there as well as the opportunity to have their staff professionally design and write your artist press kit material. To Begin with, there are scores of different ways to pre ss kit layout. It is highly recommended that you have your folders professionally printed with your logo, etc and not adopt the gloss black folder that everyone is uSing. I understand that money doesnt grow on trees, and if you are cash tight, then you might consider an off color other than black such as blue, yellow red, or variations, etc. Starting with that idea, lets look at logo design. Do you or your band currently have a logo? - If not you should. Logos are becoming increaSingly important in defining the act nowadays. Logos also help to set the mood for the tone of who you or your band is. Logo designs are fairly inexpensive and software is out there that is a great help in achieving some very professional designs. Your logo ought to be printed on the front of virtually everything your name is on From the press kit cover, CD cover, bio, etc.

When looking at the creation of your bio, it almost seems a daunting task, to get the flavor and tone right and t he pitch verbalized in such a way where you are articulate, provide a foundation of telling your reading audience why they should look further into your act, and do it in such a way as to not turn off your readers. This is a common thread among those who are serious about a powerful press kit and not just throwing it together to have something to send out. Let me assure you that if you will implement a few of these ideas and then for further reading and ideas at the ReelMusician.com website, that you will be well on your way to creating quality, eye-catching promo kits.

As a matter of practice, start reading as much material as you can, whether on line or hard copy, gleaning writing ideas tips and artistical direction that you find in the mainstream artist write-ups. I will tell you that because of mere position and the presence of record deals, that you will find it a little more difficult to write your bio. Its a much easier task when you can talk about major pla y dates with top 40 acts, or your own Singles released, etc then when you are first starting out I am well aware of that. Thats why I recommend professionally written bios on the front end of your career. Professional writers who write bios and press kits tend to have a better feel for how to address certain inadequacies with solid writing material then most artists or band members. When you are in the business to write and make someone look good in print, with little name recognition to none, you get a feel and get good at choice verbiage.

So what should you include in your artist bio? Include name of act at top in bold dont be so artsy fartsy that individuals cant make out the name or the main body of the bio for that matter. Include important play dates, Singles released, significant air play (chart number) and where, band members and anything about any player that exudes credentials. Be sure to include future release dates, any solid future bookings, your a rtist manager if they have credible acts that substantiate your credibility, length of band being together, if longer than a year, and music genre. Dont spend a lot of time picking apart the music style and dont include that you were the high school choir president and any other non-consequential type of information. Its better to have a shorter bio, than to stretch it out with information that nobody gives a darn about. The fact that you came from a certain town or region, may be important for certain unknown reasons here, but if not, dont include it. Dont include the local fundraiser that you played at if its not a fairly significant regional show. You get the idea Dont include something that you think the reader might read and say, So what.

In cloSing, and so much more could be written here, but for the sake of time and length of this article, I will leave you with that less is more, dont use the same old tired color of folders, and be aware of whats truly imp ortant when writing your artist bio. Let your creativity be shrouded in user readability, without uSing a lot of unneeded or unhelpful hype that detracts rather than supports or emphasizes and start looking at many press releases and bios to gather ideas.

Used Saxophones

Saxophones are musical instruments belonging to the woodwind category. They are one of the latest musical instruments to be invented, having come into existence in the 1840s. The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian. It was originally used in the military, though it is now a popular jazz instrument. It is generally used in big bands, marching bands and concerts. Saxophones are mostly associated with jazz because they are used mostly to play jazz music. However, they are also used for classical music. These are the four most common kinds of Saxophones: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones.

Saxophones are very expensive, with prices starting from around $1000. Hence, buying a saxophone is a big decision. But there are used or second-hand Saxophones available in the market as a cheaper alternative. However, it takes a lot of research to find a first-rate used saxopho ne, in a reasonably good condition, for a good price.

There are advantages as well as disadvantages to buying a used saxophone. The advantages are: it can be very cost-effective, given the quality; used Saxophones are made of better materials than new ones and generally have good craftsmanship; some even have engravings and other frills on them that are generally not found on new Saxophones; old and used Saxophones are also usually metal-plat ed instead of being lacquered like new ones; used Saxophones are also easy to find, as most music stores stock them; some vintage Saxophones may prove to be very valuable.

The disadvantages of buying a used saxophone are: it can be difficult to find one in good working condition; most used Saxophones tend to suffer from years of neglect; another major problem is that many used Saxophones, especially those in working condition, turn out to be stolen.

There are a few things to be considered while going for a used saxophone: check the condition of the keys and ensure that they are not leaking or noisy. Also, check for any visible dents or scratches. The pads and the cork should be in good working condition. It is better to have a professional have a look at it before buying.

The retailer at the local music store would be able to provide advice about used Saxophones. The Internet is not a very dependable source of information when it comes to used Saxophones, since you will have to rely only on glossy pictures rather than the actual product. A reliable retailer is the best option.

Saxophones provides detailed information about Saxophones, jazz Saxophones, soprano Saxophones, alto Saxophones and more. Saxophones is the sister site of Violins Web.

Why a Guitar Player Can Teach You More About Piano Than a Piano Teacher

Do you know why more people want to learn Guitar than Piano? Because it's easier! And because students get to play something that actually sounds like Music many times faster than their Piano playing counterparts.

But did you also know that a Guitar player can show you how to play Piano better than most Piano instructors? It's true! Here's why. Guitar players use chords and chord charts to create with. Piano players (for the most part) use note reading and memorization.

It's really easy for most beginning Guitarists to quickly create Music. In fact, you can learn 3 chords on the Guitar in less than 15 minutes and start to play ma ny, many tunes. Can Piano players do that? Yes they can! But sadly, most don't.

You see, many people are intimidated by the Piano. Not because of the instrument itself but because of the snobby stigma surrounding it.

The Piano is held in such high esteem that people are actually afraid to go near it. Not the Guitar. It's the everyman's instrument. Folk players, rock Guitarists, and even Uncle Joe himself can pick up this instrument and soon strum out a tune.

A beginning Piano player can also learn a few chords and just as easily create Music as well as the Guitarist. Now, the Piano isn't often taught like this because teachers can make a lot more money by stringing students along for years and years. With a chord-based approach, you can rapidly advance and learn how to play in most any style and it won't take you years either. How long will it take for you to learn a chord-based approach? Anywhere from 1-month to 1-year depending on how fast or slow you learn.

Here's the point. If you want to spend years learning how to play other peoples Music, than note reading and memorization are for you. If you want to get creative and actually make Music, look for teachers who embrace a chord-based approach to Piano playing.

Guitar Chords: How To Solo Over Chords With The Minor Pentatonic Scale

Soloing over guitar chords is easy when you know how to use the minor Pentatonic scale. Add spice and power to your solo's with these simple but highly effective techniques.

The humble minor Pentatonic scale is what most guitar players start with when learning to solo. Trouble is, they don't learn to use the scale to it's best potential.

Here, I'll show you an easy way to use the Pentatonic scale to solo over the three most common gui tar chord types: Major, minor and dominant 7th chords.

1. Major Chords

A Major chord always has a relative minor chord. The easy way to find the 'relative' minor of any major chord on a guitar is to take the note three half-steps (3 frets) below the root note of the major chord.

For example: a C major chord - the root note is C. On a guitar, the note 3 frets below a C note is A. Therefore, A minor is the relative minor of C major.

So to solo over a C major chord, use the A minor Pentatonic scale and you can't go wrong.

Another example: F major chord - three frets below the root of F, you will find D. So you use a D minor Pentatonic scale over an F major chord.

Another example: G major chord - three frets below the G root note you'll find E. So... you use the E minor Pentatonic to solo over a G chord.

Now, you may have noticed that I listed C, F and G major chords there. Coincidentally, They are the 1, 4 and 5 chords of the 'KEY' of C Major. This applies to all instruments, not just guitar.

More about this later...

2. Minor Chords

These are easy... just use the minor Pentatonic of what ever the minor chord is. E.g. Use D minor Pentatonic for a D minor chord, an E minor Pentatonic for an E minor chord, an A minor Pentatonic for an A minor Chord.

Now, did you notice I used D, E and A minor chords as the example? Did you also notice that these chords are the 2, 3 and 6 chords of the 'KEY' of C Major?

More about that later, too...

3. Dominant 7th Chords

You have a couple of choices here. But basically, you would use the relative minor Pentatonic, or the minor Pentatonic a tone below the root of the dom7 chord.

For example, over G7, you could use either E minor pent (relative minor), or D min Pentatonic.

The reason you could use the D minor Pentatonic over a G7 chord is because the Dmi chord and G7 chord often go together in chord progressions. Forcing a Dmi sound over a G7 chord gives a G7sus sound.

4. Thinking From a 'KEY Perspective

OK, what we have looked at is the KEY of C Major. And basically you can use just the A minor Pentatonic alone for ALL the chords in C, or you can also use the D and E minor Pentatonics to add some color and more conformity to the chords being used at the time.

Remember, these principles apply to whatever chord you are playing at any time, but can also be applied on a KEY basis, which is a more encompassing picture.

The Key of C Major has these chords:

C, Dm, Em, F, G7, Am, Bmin7b5.

Ami pent can be used over them all, or just the C and Am chords.

D min Pentatonic can be used over the F and Dm chords.

E minor can be used over the Em and G7 chords.

We didn't mention the 7 chord (Bmi7b5) because it's not used very much. But a good choice is the Dm Pentatonic. In fact, though, you can use either of the three Pentatonics from the C Major scale - Am, Dm or Em. Try them, see which you like best.

I hope you enjoyed this article. You can find more information about guitar chords at my site: http://www.Free-Guitar-Chords.com

The idea of using Pentatonics for different chords is a powerful one, don't overlook the cool sounds you can create with such a simple device.

Also, in a future article, I'll be discussing 'Pentatonic Substitution' where I'll show you how to use substitute and altered Pentatonics for even more sound choices.

What is Music?

That's a fair question!

Basically, you can call Music any noise that is set to either a rythm as in percussions or that follows a melodic line of some sort.

Our early ancestors sitting outside the cave by the fire, after a hard day of gathering and hunting food, probably made Music by tapping bones together or blowing in sea shells. While the rest of them would make conveniently placed grunts and howls.

Obviously, this was not Beethoven or Vivaldi Musicality :) However, Music is Music!

This begs another question and that is: What is good Music?

Altough this may seem like an impossible question to answer, there is a simple one.

Good Music is any Music you enjoy listening to! That's it!

Music is a deeply personal experience, the more varied your exposure to Music the wider your taste in Music will be. My own personal taste are very ecclectic to say the least. My personal collection includes over 5000 songs and will forever keep growing.

The Music I create is computer generated and I will sometime voice over one of my poem. How good is it? I have been reviewed as an heir to the famous group Kraftwerk!

But again those that do not like the type of Music would refer to it as CRAP! I am getting airplay in the USA, Europe and Canada thus far. I do sell a few CD here and there:)

As I write this I have 5 albums available and working on number 6...

Music is but one of my passion but definatly the most influential driving force behind all of my other artforms and it shows in my everyday actions.

Basical ly, look back at history, and you will find Music as the corner stone of every society no matter how small a tribe or how big a nation. It is an unavoidable fact that Music is and will always be here to take us along on the long road of life.

Cool Guitar Techniques Every Beginner Should Learn

One of the great things about the guitar when compared to other instruments, is the amount of subtle yet powerful techniques you can produce. This is because you have direct contact with the strings, as opposed to an instrument like a piano, where you have a limit to the different sounding techniques.

So Ive decided to cover the basics of some of these techniques. If youre a beginner, then these techniques are all things you need to eventually become familiar with.

The first technique is string bending. This is where you literally bend the strings with your fingers, to alter the pitch. It takes a little practice to get the sound in tune when you bend. Its a good idea to practice bending in semi tones (so the bent note is the same as the next fret up from the one youre bending). If your new to guitar, this may take some practice but it is a popular technique, so you need to master it.

The next technique is the hammer on. This is when you use your finger to hammer on to another fret, without playing the string again. When you get more experienced, the hammer on technique can allow you to play quicker, and get a nice flowing melody of solo out of your guitar. But really, the possibilities are endless.

The next technique is similar to the last one. It is called the pull off. This is where you pull a finger away from a fret, so the note your holding down with your other finger is sounded. This technique is often used together with a hammer on for some pretty cool effects.

The next technique is muting. This is when you mute the strings with your hand, and strum the string still. It makes a nice percussive effect that is popular in many styles of music nowadays.

The next technique is the slide. This is where you play a note, and slide your finger up (or down) to a different fret. It makes for a nice fluid sound. Its a popular technique for many songs, so its worth getting familiar with.

The final technique i s vibrato. This is when you kind of wiggle your finger back and forth, or bend the string up and down very slightly. It makes for a shaky expressive sound, which works well when you want to accentuate a pArticular note.

And there you have some of the most popular guitar techniques, some of which are exclusive to the guitar. Practice these techniques well, and youll soon be able to make your playing more distinctive and interesting.

Karaoke as a Form of Escape

People in the Philippines are definitely diligent. Working overtime comes not as a surprise, but as part of the working habit. Contrary to the misconstrued notion that Filipinos are a bunch of Juan Tamad, Filipinos are actually workaholics whether they live in the City or at some distant province or even at a foreign land. Notice the diaspora of Overseas Filipino Workers all over the world. Foreigners tend to hire Filipinos because they are known for their faithfulness, diligence, and integrity. However, in spite of Filipino's enthusiastic working routine, Filipinos are still famous for being a happy person. Studies actually show that Filipinos are in the top list of the happiest people in the world. Filipinos have developed a skill to find pleasure in the midst of tumult.

In a place where people work from dawn till dusk, pleasure is much needed. People's frenzy lives yearn for a better side of the story. Everyday, work becomes too tedious, exhausting and unbelievabl e. The need for pleasure becomes a need for air to breathe. In the eyes of a worn out person, the workplace becomes a jail where he or she is slowly stripped of life and essence. For this reason, he or she seeks to find an alternative world where he or she can really breathe; can really live; and can really be free. Oftentimes, Filipinos see Karaoke Bars as the paradise of pleasure. In this context, singing, although out of tune, becomes a form of their escape. There are two ways of how Filipinos use Karaoke as an exodus from their stressful lives. On one hand, they often choose to feel the passion in the song which purgates their emot ions. On the other hand, they let singing sever the self from verity.

A typical Filipino loves to put himself/herself in the shoe of the other. This is why Filipinos weep over the predicaments of the characters in their favorite soap opera or abhor the antagonist of the novel that they are reading. Filipinos put too much emotion in singing. They sing the lyrics of a sad song as if they were the ones who were hurt. Whenever they sing happy or love songs, you can actually feel the rush of their adrenaline. According to Plato, a person undergoes purgation after weeping over a sad story of any form of literature. His/her soul is cleansed. Afterwards, he/she feels more contented with his/her life, happy that he/she lives a better life than the overly sensationalized stories of various media.

Similarly, Kar aoke puts Filipinos in jubilant state. Upon entering the bar, a Filipino leaves everything at the doorstep including his business worries, financial problems and relationship concerns. As soon as they find a good position, they play a good song, grab the microphone and belt out the lyrics with all their might forgetting the harshness of their respective lives. Karaoke sends people to a temporary euphoric condition where life becomes nothing, but bliss. But this bliss is transient for after the singing, the Filipino goes back to reality where he faces his problem, now reinvigorated.

Songwriter Confessions #5

The ghost of Bob Dylan breezed into the studio this week and touched me on the shoulder. Lyrically, Bobby Zim has always been right up there, although melodically hes down here with the rest of us. I played in a folk group in the 60s around Britain and in France and my mental repertoire of folk Music often helped me in spotting melodies that ole Bob had borrowed from the folkies. For instance: the melody of Bob Dylans 115th Dream is a direct lift of a 19th century whaling song called Brave Franklin (and His Gallant Crew). But Music is full of coincidences: ever notice that the verse chords and melody of the Bellamy Bros If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body and the Eagles Lying Eyes are exactly the same? No? I bet the lawyers did

Anyhoo Bobs specter touched me on the shoulder and suit-ably inspired, I grabbed a pencil and started scribblingheres what I wrote:

Crystal tango souvenirs race through my boxcar dreams
And leopard skins in pickle jars lie down in vel vet screams
The image of the conqueror is burned into my brow
No resurrection tragedy can undersell me now

No, I dont know what it means eitherbut it gets worse/better

One screaming year of ecstacy falls in a ball of flame
Crying out Jerusalem or any other name
And sailors scramble to the ropes still coiled around his neck
While kings and queens look on and throw their arrows with respect

So far, so whaaat? But now it gets pretty good

A fortune hidden in the flames, a beast inside a cage
No careless hand can understand the storms that in him rage
The monster lies in alibis thrown down from day to day
I wish I had the legs to go, but more the guts to stay

I kinda like that, but now we need the big wrap-up

So fare you well, young pensioner; a husk inside a shell
And all you princes of delight, I know you far too well
The eagle shakes his feathers out, the angel tips his ring
And Noah pu lls the plug out, as the waves begin to sing

Well, I must say at this point, I dont know whether to reach for the Valium or the Smith & Wesson. This may be why Bob crashed his motorcycle and went away for a while. I even sought the advice of my good friends Jose Cuervo and Jack Daniels, but after much discussion, no consensus had been reached by the time I fell off the chair onto the cat.

If you think you have a clue, drop me a line at feedback@billdollarMusic.com. And if Mr Dylan should happen to see this love ya, Bob!

Learning How To Play Guitar Online

Do you know why music is so awesome and unique?

Because no one can take it from you. Whats even more awesome is that you can make music your own. Haven't you ever thought of having a hit song, or releasing an album? I know most of those thoughts are just dreams and kind of far fetched, but the truth is you don't have to be famous in order to play or write your own music.

One of the most popular instruments these days is the guitar. It seems like everywhere you look there's another person playing guitar. This is really good, but the problem is that a lot of these guitar players don't have any guidence, and either end up quitting or just never getting any better.

If you are interested in learning guitar, or perhaps you already play guitar, but are looking for some tips, then please read on. Below are several very helpful tips thats can help a newbie with learning guitar.

1. Don't expect to be some kind of amazing guitar player overnight! It ju st doesn't happen that way. Like most things, learning guitar takes time and you must be patient. The more you practice the better.

2. StArt off slow. Don't rush yourself, and don't drive yourself crazy if you don't get something right the first, second, or third time. It may take you a hundred times to get a riff right. The important thing is that you stArt off slow. Example: If you found a new riff, or chord progression that you like, stArt off practicing very slow. It may se em tedious, but it helps tremendously. Once you stArt adjusting to the riff, stArt increasing the speed.

3. Practice chord changes. One of the worst things to me is watching someone struggle to change between simple chords. Make sure to get these chord changes down. This will make everything so much easier in the long run.

4. One of my favorite things to do is to practice on an acoustic guitar. This strengthens your fingers greatly, and helps build speed.

5. Listen to lots of music. Any kind of music is ok. Then, just try and figure out whatever you're listening to on guitar. Even if you only get in a couple of notes or chor ds, thats ok. This technique will help with your musical ear. Then after enough practice you'll be able to pick up a song on the radio in no time.

I wish I could help you more, but unfortuneately thats about as good as I can do within an Article.

I highly advise taking lessons. I know that taking lessons can cost a lot of money, but with technology these days you can take guitar lessons online for way cheaper. Usually a one time fee around $40 or $50. There are some really great programs out there that I highly recommend. Guitar Tutor Pro is an internet course that teaches guitar lessons online. If you're looking for a program that covers the basics, scales, chords, reading music, theory, and more then this is the site for you.

Guitars The Parker Fly Guitar

I have been a huge fan of Parker Guitars since 2002, when I first purchased a Parker Nitefly and later purchased a Parker Fly ($2,500 - $3,700). There is no way to adequately describe what its like to play a Parker Guitar. Its like, well, the only thing that can describe how nice is feels to play a Parker is to compare to having sex. But my Parker never gets a head ache, does not want any jewelry and never says NO. All kidding aside, in my opinion The Parker Fly is the best guitar available for the money.

Parker has a lower cost P series guitar that is both high quality and inexpensive. Made in Korea, they are fine instruments and play considerably better than most Asian build Guitars. To me, if you are going to own a Parker you should buy their Parker Mojo, which are quite expensive, but worth the price. There is a tremendous difference between the US and Asian made Guitars

What sets the Parker Fly and Fly Mojo apart from the competition is the incredible playability of the guitar. It is extremely light weight, made of the best tone woods and has the fastest and most consistent neck every designed. Best of all there are no dead zones on the necks, and the frets NEVER wear out. Well, if you wear out the Stainless Steel frets youre certainly a better man than me.

The Fly Mojo and the new Fly Mojo Flame are made from a solid one-piece mahogany body joined to a solid mahogany neck. The Fly Mojo Flame features an AAA F lame Maple face that provides a stunning appearance without sacrificing the warm mahogany tones. All Mojo Guitars include Parker's patented neck design with stainless steel frets and Parker's ultra-durable and fast carbon glass fingerboard.

A word about Sperzel locking tuners: once youve experienced the ease of changing strings and the stead fast tune ability of the locking tuner you will never want another guitar without them. Just thread the string through the bridge and the whole on the end of the tuning peg, tighten and youre done. No winding needed, accept to tune the instrument.

But the most important thing about a guitar is how it sounds. According to Ken Parker; every part of the instrument, the body, the neck, the bridge has to to sing. Every component has an inherited tonal quality, which properly matched and molded, make up the tonal quality of the guitar.

Parker Guitars is now part of the Washburn Guitar Company, another favorite of mine. If you are in the market for a premium quality US Made guitar you should consider the Parker Guitar.

The Bagpipe and Its History

You may have heard that Bagpipes are a Scottish invention; you may have heard that they are an Irish invention. The truth (of course) is neither one. The Bagpipe was invented in the middle east. The Old Testament mentions the instrument in the book of Daniel chapter 3, where it is listed as one of the instruments that was used to call the people to worship a golden statue that king Nebuchadnezzar had set up. (Anyone who disobeyed had to be thrown into a blazing fire --yaiks!!) This event took place in ancient Iraq, which was then part of the Babylonian empire.

From the middle east migrating tribes of peoples took the instruments to different parts of Europe, Asia and northern Africa. Some 200 years ago the instrument was very popular throughout Europe. It was around that time that the ruling clas s started to forbid the instrument. It was decided that this instrument, with its droning sound was a poor mans instrument and should have no part in modern music.

As a result, the instrument was forbidden in almost all of Europe, except for a few outposts such as Scotland and Bulgaria. The Bagpipe in its many forms, as of today still has retained its natural tuning.

The melody pipe or chanter has to tune in with the drone, therefore, it is hard to play together with other tempered tuned instruments. The key cannot be changed, also on account of this droning.

However, modern music, even though more sophisticated, has lost a very important ingredient of music, namely the rich overtones.

Those rich tones that you can hear in a well-tuned Bagpipe can only be heard when the notes are exactly tuned. This is only the case in Bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies (a similar instrument that operates with strings instead of pipes) and in voice.

However recently the Bagpipe has been revived in modern music and there are now world wide many people who play the instrument. This is primarily due to the fact that the (scottish highland)Bagpipe has been used as a military instruments.

Today the instrument is being used in many different types of music, there are not only players of many different kinds of Bagpipes again, there are also modern Bagpipe builders.

This modern revival of the instrument has been inspired by painters such as Pieter Brueghel, who painted the instrument as it was played in the 1600s.

Violin Or Fiddle? The Differences Explained by a Player

“That’s a fine lookin’ Fiddle ya got there, kid.”

I gritted my teeth into a forced smile and quietly thanked the old man at the bus stop. “Fiddle!?” I thought, gritting my teeth into a polite smile. “It’s a V-I-O-L-I-N, you old goat!”

Teenagers are sensitive and easily embarrassed, but this chickie had a bit too much pride in self-labeled “superiority as a classical musician,” which meant I was annoyingly arrogant and a general pain in the butt.

Humbled by merciless teasing in jazz college opened my eyes to the music outside my sanctioned little bubble.

I learned to Fiddle.

For the most part “Fiddle” is a Style of music, such as Celtic, Bluegrass or Old Time. Nevertheless, there are a few Differences and stereotypes between Fiddle and Violin.

We’ve all threatened Fluffy that she’ll be taking a trip to the string factory if she doesn&r squo;t stop scratching the couch. There’s the Violin’s dark secret of winding silver around a stretched piece of animal tissue (run Fluffy, run!). This used to be the principal method of making Violin Strings.

Gut Strings possessed a rich and full quality ideal for orchestral Playing. They weren’t perfect for the bank account, however, and Fiddlers resorted to the cheaper alternative: steel. Steel Strings have a “bright” timbre (tone) and carry well in a solo situation.

Steel Strings are very difficult to tune with the Violin’s clumsy wooden pegs. Many steel Strings were broken until the glorious invention of fine-tuners, the tiny little metal mechanisms on the tailpiece that makes tuning a piece of cake. Violinists adopted this technology for use on their steel “E” Strings which is nearly impossible to tune with the peg.

When I was youth symphony many Players removed th eir lower string fine tuners haughtily, like a child insisting training wheels are for babies. The use of fine tuners on all four Strings unfortunately had become associated with less skilled musicians since Fiddlers used them. There is also evidence that fine tuners alter the quality of harmonics (higher frequencies). This a ridiculous stereotype was invented: Violinists use the pegs, Fiddlers use fine tuners.

It is thought that Fiddles are simply cheap Violins. At one time this could have been true, as poorer or rural folks usually Played home-made Fiddles, not Strads. They were less likely to afford private lessons or attend the symphony, but learned traditional tunes at jams and ceilidhs (kay-lees). Since many Fiddlers never had formal lessons, most couldn’t read music and Played everything by ear, whereas Violinists could read music usually could not improvise. Another stereotype was invented.

Holding a Violin with one’s jaw makes it nearly impossible to talk and Play simultaneously (similar to walking around with your pants around your ankles). Square dancing Fiddlers dealt with this difficulty by holding the Violin down on their arm rather than under the chin, freeing up their jaws to “call” the dance moves. This Technique is a big no-no in classical Playing and it created yet another rift between Violin and Fiddle.

Luckily it seems the Violin/Fiddle gap has narrowed considerably in the past few years. Most Players use new hybrid Strings that posses a full and rich, yet clear, tone and respond well to both classical and Fiddle Playing. Classical Violinists aren’t so sticky about fine tuners anymore as they are seen as an advantage over using stubborn old pegs.

The resurgence of Fiddle music in pop culture has created an opportunity for Fiddlers to aspire to a higher level of Playing ability and for Vi olin students to branch out and try other Genres of music. Hence Fiddlers and Violinists alike have finer instruments and a formal music education.

Fiddle Technique is being abandoned by many Fiddlers who have discovered the benefits, such as greater speed and fewer backaches, of the classical Technique. New programs in music education in new programs has produced Fiddlers who can read music and Violinists who can improvise.

As more musicians branch out musically and develop new ways of Playing there will be little Difference between "Violin” and “Fiddle.” Musicians will feel much more comfortable Playing with each other and the stereotypes will fade away, both Violin and Fiddle will be valid.

You’ll see the old man at the bus stop whistling to “Celtic Swing Baroque Techno” on his MP3 Player.

Cuban Style Salsa in New Zealand

Origin:
Salsa is often used to refer to Cuban genres such as Cha-Cha and Mambo. Salsa developed as an independent genre in the 70s although the music was already played and danced to for a few decades. Although Salsa originated in Cuba, it has recently moved across continents and is currently getting a new form in American Clubs with the NY and LA styles being developed. Both NY and LA styles are Linear styles, whereas Cuban Salsa refers to it's original circular form.

Music:
Salsa music is played in 4/4 with beats 4 and 8 representing a pause and the other beats representing steps. Claves, Congo or the tin drum are often used to mark the main beats of the music. The music is quite similar to Mambo.

Dance:
Salsa has a 4/4 rythm. The 4th and 8th beats are used to pause or tap. Women tend to subtly kick in the air instead of tapping. Like most forms of dance, the men lead with their hands, although Cuban Salsa has a very relaxed frame. Shoulders are often moved while dancing, the most common move being a Shimmy! The body is also slight bent while dancing and is lower to the ground with bent knees.

Latinos NZ Popularity Scale: 10/10
Salsa is definitely the crowd pleaser at Latin Clubs in New Zealand, with the Cuban style being much more popular to the Linear Style. In the recent months, the Latin dance scene in New Zealand has exploded with extremely fast growth and new clubs popping up around the major cities. Almost all this growth has been in the number of Salsa dancers.

Grand Pianos Too Expensive?

Do you know what a guitar player has to spend to get a good quality acoustic instrument? Anywhere from $500 to $2000 depending on make and model. Do you know what a Piano player looking for a grand Piano has to spend to get a similar quality instrument? Anywhere from $5000 to $100,000 and up!

Who has this kind of money? Not the average Joe on the street. No. Grand Pianos are beautiful and great sounding but are way out of the price range of the average family. What to do? Well there's the baby grand. Here we have a nice instrument that can be bought used for as little as $2000.

While the sound won't be as full and resonant as the grand Piano sound, still, it's worth looking into. Many baby grand Pianos have the look and feel of a grand without the high price tag AND they actually fit in your living room. Grand Pianos on the other hand are 6 feet in length or more and require substantial space to house them.

If a baby grand Piano is too expensive for you, there's the upright Piano. This is the choice most take. Why? Because they are relatively inexpensive and take up very little space. Some sound as good as baby grand's depending on make and model. And they have their charm as well. Look to spend anywhere from $1000 to $3000 for a decent Piano of this type.

Or you can go digital. Now, digital Pianos these days sound as good as the grand Pianos they are sampled from but... they will never give you the sound you can get from an acoustic instrument. There's just no way a digital Piano can capture the many overtones and harmonics that real Pianos give but, they are quite a deal if that doesn't bother you!

Fast Piano Improvisation Secret Gives You Instant Satisfaction on the Keyboard

Have you ever seen someone playing Piano without sheet Music and wonder how are they doing that?

It's like magic to the uninitiated. They think this person must have years and years of training under their belt. And while some pianists do have years of classical training it doesn't mean a thing!

That's right. In fact, having a classical background can actually hinder your ability to just sit down and freely improvise. No, what most improvising pianists know is how to use chords. Chords and knowledge of the scale the chords came from is all that is needed to make Music at the Piano.

Now, most of you have heard of triads. The se are 3 note chords that sound something Mozart or Beethoven might have played for their children to get them interested in Piano. There's absolutely nothing wrong with learning triads - except for one thing... they're boring!

Listen to this

What if you could learn a chord position that would give you a modern sound right away AND allow you to use both of your hands. And what if this chord structure could provide you with rich, lush sounding chords? You'd probably want to learn this kind of chord type over triad's right?

Yet thousands upon thousands of Piano students begin their studies with the age-old chord structure known as the triad. Now, thankfully, you don't have to start this way.

Here's the point. This is the year 2006. We have Jazz and contemporary styles that go beyond the triad and begin with something called seventh chords.

But how exactly do we play these? By using something called the Open Position Chord structure. Here we use bo th hands to finger a modern sounding seventh chord. And we use over 2 octaves of the keyboard as well. With this kind of chord, we can instantly begin creating our own Music.

How easy is this? If I were to tell you that you could begin creating your own Music within 1 hour would you believe me? Probably not. But if I were to show you exactly how to do it... well, then, that's another matter altogether. Don't take my word for it. Just take my free lesson below and see for yourself!

Ibanez SR400 Bass Guitar

The Ibanez SR400 bass guitar is very comfortable to play. The neck is thin up at the headstock, you can move your hand along it well because of the necks finish. The SR400's neck at the back has a matte finish making it very easy to slide your hands up and down the neck. Its easier to play the higher frets because the neck is a bolt-on with a curve where the neck bolts.

The body of the Ibanez SR400 is contoured very well. There are no sharp edges anywhere. You can play the SR400 standing up or sitting comfortably. If you are sitting down and put the bass on your right thigh, it will stay balanced and not lean one way or another.

The SR400 bass guitar is very playable because the strings are loose. You won't have to play with much force to get a sound, and it won't wear your fingers out so much.

The pickups of the SR400 Ibanez are in P/J configuration. There is a split P pickup at the neck position and a single humbrucker at the bridge. For each pickups volumn there are three knobs and one for tone.

The Ibanez SR400 bass guitar stays in tune very well. The tuners at the head are 2 on each side, and they are Gotoh tuners. The tuners are not to tight or loose, but they are light enough to keep the strings in tune.

The SR400 bass is good for an intermediate guitarist, and the best thing about it is its neck is so smooth, playable, and thin.

How To Pick A Guitar

When you play a guitar, you will have to know how to pick a guitar and these are some of them.

There is the standard style of picking a guitar. The standard style is holding the pick between the flat of the thumb and the side of the index finger with your fingers either anchored on or draped across the pick guard.

This style does have some disadvantages. You will find that pressing the thumb against the side of the finger to be an uncomfortable position. You will also find that if you dont press hard enough, the pick will become unsteady when you pick the string. You will find that the pick will catch on the strings.

There is a variation of the standard style where the remaining fingers are in a loose or tight fist. There should be no contact between the hand and the guitar except through the pick. The advantage of this standard style variation is that you should have less baggage to swing around. This is because the mass of the fingers are closer to the axis of the wrist.

The main disadvantage of this variation is that even in the greatest of players, they were inconsistent in the accuracy of their playing. They kept on losing on losing their point of reference of fingers that were touching the pick guard.

Another variation of the standard style is that the palm rests flat on the bridge, either behind or in front, depending whether the strings need muting or not. You can have other fingers open or closed.

This standard style variation is perfect for electric guitar players who usually deal with feedback that they dont want.

The problem with this variation is that you have to play with a side to side motion rather than at the wrist. This will eventually lead to having a locked wrist and you will not be able to play faster.

There is another variation of standard style. When you play using this variation, you have the thumb side of your palm raised with the opposite side of your palm resting on t he bridge. The only difference between this variation and the regular standard style is the hand location.

Another variation of the standard style is called circle picking. You hold the pick the same way as the standard style. You move by flexing the first joint of the thumb, with the index finger extending at its second joint. You slide the pick along the string before crossing it, turning counterclockwise on down strokes and clockwise on upstrokes. This essentially means that you are making a circular motion to play the strings and the reason that it is called circle picking.

The main advantage is that you can play several strings with no arm or wrist motion at all. The tones sound nice when using this style. It is a fun way to play if you dont mind looking weird.

The main problem with this picking style is that your feel will suffer. You will constantly have to will yourself to control your timing. It is hard to do large strokes like strumming. You will find eventually that the extra motion of the thumb and index finger are inefficient and limit speed.

George Benson has a unique picking style. When you want to use the pick like George Benson, you put the pick between the tip of the thumb and the flat of the index finger. The middle finger should rest against the index finger. The first joint of the thumb should be locked in a fully open position. You should the first and second joints of the index finger arched and locked. You should find that the pick is 90 degrees counterclockwise from the standard style.

Stimulate Your Brain with Classical Music

Ill always remember my dad saying that he loved listening to birdsong early in the morning. The singing centered him in a way that I didnt understand at the time.

Now I know why he felt so refreshed.

Birdsong is a high frequency sound around 5,000 hertz. Any sound between 5,000 and 8,000 hertz has been found to recharge our brains batteries.

You know what else is amazing?

5,000 hertz is also the frequency that energizes plants. In fact plants showed a 700 percent increase in efficiency of absorbing nutrients when exposed to high frequency classical music. This frequency actually helps the little pores on the plant's leaves called stomata to open up.

And who says nature doesn't have a plan. Thats why you'll find that in areas that don't have a lot of birds singing, there's not a lot of plant growth either.

Lots of birds equals lots of plants. Few birdsongs means not a whole lot of greenery. Now I know why we moved from Los Angeles to Ash eville, North Carolina we wanted birds and trees in our life.

Have you ever entered a room that has a weird or uncomfortable feeling about it? You might just be getting uncomfortable because of low frequency sound waves.

The lowest of those are called infrasound. Theyre produced by machines such as vehicles, household equipment and heating and cooling systems. Its been known for some time that these low frequency waves can cause symptoms such as nausea, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, vibration of internal organs and a feeling of oppression.

On the other hand, certain high frequency sounds literally energize your mind. Scientists have found that sounds from 5,000 to 8,000 hertz recharge your brains batteries.

If your CD collection includes music by Mozart, Baroque Music or even Tibetan Chants, keep listening. In numerous studies, these sounds have been found to charge the cortex of the brain and stimulate health and wellness.

At 120-125 hertz yo u begin to hear the kick drums and bass guitar common to rock music. These lower frequencies produce the opposite effect - they drain us.

Why is this?

Because they have wave-lengths longer than we are tall, which is why lower frequencies are FELT as well as heard. You can feel this low frequency full-body sensation at dance clubs and rock concerts. Or from listening to most FM radio stations.

Since we are mostly exposed to low frequency sounds in the media, I strongly suggest you balance your brain and body by listening to high frequency classical music at least once a day. Its easy and effortless and great for you.

Heres to your sound health.

Countdown to the Brit Music Awards

Its that time of year again when the British Music industry has its most illustrious night of the year. The Brit Awards are only 22 days away and counting. The Awards celebrate the crme de la crme of the Music industry here in Britain. The Brits seem to catch the headlines every year with dazzling performances and sometimes controversial appearances such as when Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of the band Pulp, ran on stage and mooned Michael Jackson when he was in the middle of a somewhat frivolous Musical performance.

This years nominations have been announced and new comers the Kaiser Chiefs and James Blunt are set to steal the show with an outstanding five nominations each. Coldplay are just behind the frontrunners with four nominations and KT Tunsall leads the ladies with three nominations under her belt. This year Paul Weller will claim the notorious Outstanding Contribution to Music award.

Performing at the event are the critically acclaimed animated band, Go rillaz created by Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn (formerly of Blur). Other acts include the American chart-topper Kanye West who will be joining Coldplay, James Blunt, KT Tunstall, the Kaiser Chiefs and Kelly Clarkson with one very special guest still to be announced.

The first Brit Award Ceremony took place in October 1977 at Wembley Conference Centre with Cliff Richard winning best British Male Artist and The Beatles winning the best British Group Awards. Last years event marked 25 shows of the Brit Awards and had a timeless performance from the Scissor Sisters dressed in Jim Henson Muppet style costumes.

What many people dont know is that the Brit Awards is a charity event which makes money for the British Recording Industry Trust, established in 1989. Its aim is to give young people an opportunity to express their Musical capability regardless of race, class or sex. The Brits school in Croydon, is funded by the Brits trust and has educated artists such as Kat ie Melua, Lynden David Hall and the band Another Level, to name a few.

This years Brit Awards will be shown a day after the actual performance on ITV 1 at 8pm on Thursday February 16th. Be sure not to miss them because judging from the line up you will regret it.

Piano Music How to Begin and End a Piece

How do you begin a piece of Music? That's a question I'm often asked. The answer I usually give is that you begin as soon as you start playing - that is, if you're trying to compose something, the piece begins the moment it has energy and is something you want to capture. If it's an Improvisation, the piece begins the moment you set your fingers on the keys and hit the first note. It's like free flow writing and writing a chapter to a novel.

The writer can both improvise and enjoy the process or can structure the ideas more - or, as I like to do, combine both procedures into one. I start out by Improvising - always. Then, if I want to memorialize a Musical idea, I write down the first two bars of melody along with the chord(s) I'm playing. I throw this on a chart and voila - the idea remai ns fresh until I want to either expand on it, or ignore it completely.

If the idea is a rhythm pattern I write down (Left hand = whatever the pattern is) so I can remember it later. I never stop Improvising though because that would stop the flow and who knows what could come out of it. Don't forget that an Improvisation is a piece of Music in and of itself. There is really no need to impose structure on something as beautiful and organic as spontaneous expression. In fact, these spur of the moment fantasies are often more inspiring than any contrived Composition. There is something more alive to them because there IS more life to them.

Endings pose another problem, namely the problem of when to stop playing. For Improvisation, the answer is when energy (inspiration) starts to wane dow n. That's a good time to bring your Music to an end. You'll know when this is happening when you become bored. That's the sign it's time to stop.

Composition is a different story. The form of the piece already dictates when you should stop. For example, an ABA form tells you to play the A section once or twice, go to B, back to A then bring the piece to an end. Of course the amount of repetition and contrast is a personal decision but the form establishes both beginning and ending. It's a nice safe way to say that yes, I have a piece of Music here. Now, Improvisations can have form as well. The big difference is that you don't consciously think about putting the Music into a predefined shape.

But for some unknown reason, most Improvisations do have symmetry - that is they take on a form of their own. I don't know if this is because of human beings innate rhythm (heartbeat) or what.

Even Zen flute Music, which may be the most freely inspired Improvisation s tyle around has some structure. You can hear it in the phrases. Beginnings and endings. Don't worry too much about them. What's important is where you are emotionally while you play. Become aware of that and all your problems are solved.

Piano Chords and New Age Music

There are basically two ways you can compose a piece of Music. The first and most traditional way is to write out the melody and then harmonize it. Some call this working from the top (as opposed to the chords on the bottom.) The second approach is where you create some kind of rhythmic harmonic pattern and improvise (or compose) the melody on top. Now, which one is best for New Age Music?

The answer is neither approach. Each has its own merits and own special benefits. For example, if you start with a pattern in your left hand and improvise a melody with your right, you are doing what most new age composers/improvisers do. This is wha t George Winston does most of the time. He has chords he sets to a certain rhythm and does his thing with that amazing right hand of his.

This is the style that I have been playing, but I've recently lost interest in it. Not because it isn't good but because I don't feel like playing that way anymore. Currently I'm leaning towards a softer sound that comes from leading with the melody first. What I do is get the first 2-bars down and then improvise the rest till I fill up 8 measures. This way I can vary the chords and patterns without it sounding very repetitive (minimalism). It's actually another style. You can call it melodic while the other one (Harmony approach) is more textural. IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR MOOD!

Don't let one style freeze you into something where you can't maneuver artistically! Remember that your feeling must come first. Everything else is secondary. Let your feeling lead you and your creation will be truly inspired, however, if you try to mold what you have to say into a specific style, the result may be less than satisfactory.
