Improving Your Improvisation Skills

What exactly is Improvisation? It's a word that means, to make up... to create without forethought or plan.

Many students want to improve their ability to improvise but make a big mistake when they think this means learning new techniques. No. The key to improving Improvisation skill is to be able to let go of the need to control what comes out of you and let the Music itself takeover. This makes all the difference!

Here, we are not making something up or trying to produce something. We are allowing the Music to come through us and be born of its own. This difference in approach makes all the difference because it puts an end to trying to come up with material!! Being able to improvise does not mean having a lexicon of techniques to draw upon. It does not mean virtuosity at all. It means being open and receptive to what's coming next.

This skill is developed as you learn how to accept what is coming out of you, regardless of so called mistakes or errors.< /p>

Your Improvisation skill will increase with your ability to relinquish control. A paradox to be sure, but one that I've found to be true again and again. Learn technique of course. Learn chords, yes. But then let it go and play the Piano.

Simple ABA Form Creating Your Own Piano Compositions!

Form to give shape to something. Yes, form is about giving music shape. Odd as this sounds (because we can't see music) there can be a definable shape to our creations. One of the more frequently used forms is called ABA.

This means we play a section of music 1 or 2 times, we play another (B) and then we return to our first section. Seems simple enough right? Yet many students have trouble creating their own Piano Compositions using this simple form. Most likely, this has to do with thinking too much.

Many students over think things and make their job of music creation that much harder. It doesn't have to be that way. Not if you think in phrases! For example, take the lesson Rainforest Revisited.

Here we return to Lesson 3: Rainforest which is basically an extended Improvisation. In Rainforest Revisited, you're shown how to add another section of music - a contrasting (B) section to create a new piece of music in ABA form.

Now most of you have no trouble when it comes to improvising and just playing the Piano. Your music flows out of you and this is how it should be. The problem comes when students try and think about what comes next. Wrong approach! Don't think! Continue your next section the same way - by using your intuition.

Here's how I came up with the (B) section for Rainforest Revisited. I simply sat down at the Piano, played the original Rainforest piece and allowed my intuition to guide me to the next section. I didn't ask what should come next? No. I felt my way through. I knew the (B) section would be 8-bars or so long and just came up with something contrasting to the original Rainforest. I now had a (B) section and could turn the entire thing into an ABA form piece of music!

Musical Improvisation Basics 8 Vital Things To Remember

This article discusses 8 vital things to remember as Improvisers - whether Advanced or just getting started:

1. Your technique is probably miles ahead of your ability to think.

This isn't just true for Classical players. I've known lots and lots (and lots) of jazz players who have let their technique run the show as opposed to their brains. Happens all the time.

With players who are just Beginning to Improvise, this is vital to keep in mind. Slow down! Even at furious tempi, you can long meter melodic phrases that dance and skip over the fast tempo - thinking them in real time. And you can have great preci sion and Musicality in doing so.

FYI, most players who play so fast you are asking yourself how can they think that stuff in real time - probably aren't really thinking that stuff in real time. Most are performing a memorized, yet impressive move. Sort of a human software, sub- routine call. To me, not the real thing.

Personally, I'd rather listen to simple ideas that are inspired than impressive, over- thought, over-prepared ideas any day. Particularly when they are masquerading as Improvisation.

2. You will be playing unexpected notes (mistakes) in the best of situations.

Yes, I know, we're supposed to KNOW what we are doing. But to get good at anything, we have to stretch, and stretching means taking risks, and taking risks means making mistakes.

Over time, you r eally will be able to hear a melody and execute it flawlessly. But by then, you'll be stretching into new realms of harmony or rhythm and hearing more possibilities in melody - and making more mistakes. It really never stops, if you're doing it right.

3. Keep a Music manuscript journal.

Write down any ideas that you have - chords, bits of melody, melodic shapes, anything. Use the notation system devised over hundreds of years. If you can't be precise, don't be. If all you can think of is a rhythm with undefined notes, write the rhythm with X's as the notes - defining them as non-specific. Non-specific is good.

4. Here's a big one - sing with your playing.

Start now. Start with your current repertoire. By doing so, we are unconsciously hooking up our brain with our voice with our instrument.

What we're reaching for is the ability to sing our lines as we create them, simultaneously playing the right notes on our instrument. That's a non- linear jump, but we can build the muscles for that now.

If you've ever heard a Keith Jarrett record, you've probably heard all the weird noises he makes with his phrases. Sounds like he's squeezing one out (and that's probably not far from the truth...). I think I can safely say that he is letting his phrases force the issue, physically and mentally. He doesn't sing perfect notes, but almost the intention of his lines - as I have said in the past, riding the forward momentum of the moment's creation. You'll note that the intensity of his vocalizations seem phrase related, as opposed to note defined. He sure ain't singing melody.

So, if you can't sing your phrases, growl them. Get yourself to the next level by allowing the force of the Music to drive the notes and phrases out of you. In time, they Begin to align.

5. Here's a related one - Think in terms of phrases, as opposed to notes.

Be non-specific. Any way we can keep the big picture i n mind is a very good thing. I have found that painting the big picture, tends to forgive the micro mistakes.

Another approach is to think in terms of texture as opposed to notes. This frees us from note definition and allows for us to discover the Music that transcends note specific thinking.

6. Create some time every day for you to experiment and not sound good.

This process really does take a daily commitment to achieve. Spend a good 20 minutes playing stuff you are willing to sound outright wrong. If you have to wear headphones with an electronic instrument in order keep the ego unmolested - so be it. But spend this time.

7. Mistakes often are the best means for discovering something that is unique to you.

This is a really big one. We are all shaped by a compilation of experiences, positive and negative, over the course of our life.

Why would Music be any different?

When you make a mistake, you may find a new melodic ide a, a new harmony, a new voicing. Write these down in your Music manuscript journal (see above). They will become the basis for your own library of Musical ideas that are unique to you.

A caveat. Your mistake generated idea may not be totally original. Your F minor 9 voicing may be the same one 40,000 other pianists may use. But it is your process that delivered the idea, and that process is entirely unique. It may make you write material that is particularly F minor 9 centric. Maybe that way, you'll write Music that hasn't been thought of before coming from that point of view.

Music Improvisation is a non-linear explosion of creative thought.

What makes us unique in life, works the same way in the Music that we create. Even if you were an identical clone of someone, there is no one who has all of your experiences and made the mistakes you've made.

Use this.

8. Finally, build a safe space for this development so you aren't dissuaded from your path.

This process is a very personal one. Sharing your results may not impress anyone except yourself for now. That's fine. Keep it private as needed. The last thing you need to do is show your journal to someone who says, Oh yeah, I've seen that before. So and so did it this way, and so and so did it that way. Deflation does not breed continuity.

It's almost as though you are building your Chi. In martial arts, Chi is the life force that is released upon a move (maybe that's what Jarrett is up to...).

You are interested in building your Musical Chi, because that will permit things to happen that won't happen any other way. Deflating it by sharing with the wrong people is counter-productive and makes little sense.

Piano Students Spring Into Piano Add Flexibility and Bounce to Your Playing!

Muscle Flexibility is important to playing an instrument such as the piano. This allows a student to play easily, with finger spring, wrist flexibility and control. But surprisingly this important element of playing doesnt begin with the fingertips. It stArts in the large muscles of the back, shoulder and upper arms.

Think back to your science or anatomy class. Remember that skeleton guy standing next to your teachers desk, waiting to be used as an example? Well its time to pay attention in class, because this boney guy has some valuable tips for piano students. All of the pArts that make up your collar bone, shoulder blade, upper arm, fo rearm, wrist, hand and fingers are connected and operate as one skeletal and muscular system. You remember how that tune goes: The head bones connected to the neck bone, the neck bones connected to the collar bone Well its true. So use this important lesson from your science class to get some bounce your piano step. Begin by using your large muscles at the top of this system so your fingers can do the walking with a spring in their step!

Follow the steps below to begin using your muscles correctly for piano.

Step1 - Sit up tall on the piano bench and imagine that your neck is stretching up to the ceiling from the top of your head. You should feel a sense of buoyancy in your posture. Arch your lower back.

Step 2 - Swing your upper arms out from your sides until your hands are flat (kind of like a birdie getting ready to flap its wings.)

Step 3 - With your forearms above the keyboard, reach out to the piano until you can feel stretch in your mu scles all the way back from your shoulder blade.

Step 4 - Keeping your hands in a rounded position, stretching each finger tip down to the keys. Play G, F, E, D, C. Shifting the weight from one finger to the next with a little spring in your step.

Step 5 - To get from one hand position to another or from one octave to another, bounce and land. Allow your finger to jump out of the first position by lifting at the elbow to bounce and land in the new position.

Step 6 - When playing a scale or run of notes, play the first note lightly, then spring out of the second note into the next one. This transfers energy and weight from one key to the next easily.

Keep following these simple steps and youll soon see how easy it is to get around the keyboard with a spring in your step. Then youll get an A in science and piano!

Lara Fabian: The Nue Album Honesty And Integrity In The Purest Form

Lara started her career with a self-titled album, showing to the world that she is the essence of her own music. Her Pure album also contains the theme of honesty, pure music means honest music. Her English career also started with a self-titled album that contained a track called I am who I am. Lara stated that this would have been the title of the album if it wasnt self-titled. Being the person who she is and being true to herself means that her music will always portray honesty and integrity to her audience. Nue followed after her self-titled English album and in 2005 came an album entitled 9. 9 was the rebirth of Laras music, a process coming to full circle. Again you could witness her honesty and the purity of her music throughout this album. Now Lara is working on a multilingual album. Lara has always emp hasised that music (and to me especially her music) is a universal language that cant be barred by language gaps. I believe that Lara will prove this philosophy with the release of her next album.

I have illustrated to you that Lara applies the central theme you find in the Nue album in most, if not all, of her music. Lara is one of the very few artists I know who is able to develop an album where almost every track is a smashing number one hit. So many artists these days focuses on one single track to promote their album with, that they tend to spend less time with the other tracks on the album, which results in an album failure. This is what makes people hesitant to buy albums from unknown artists. You might have heard one or two songs from the album over the radio, but you have no idea what to expect fro m the rest of the album. Once you buy it, you find that the other songs are not nearly as good as the singles you heard over the radio. When this is the case you will most certainly not buy another album of this artist again. Lara has the ability to keep her audience interested in her music by making each song on her albums a special song, as if each song is an advertisement of her music. After going through a whole album you cry for more when you finish the last song. This is why fans never can wait for her next release, there is always something new, something pure, something honest to look forward too.

Allow me to walk with you through each song on the Nue album and show to you how wonderful this album really is. To me, this is Laras best French album. I think my motives for rating this album as the best so far, is because of the success of her Nue concert. This was an amazing show with passion, power, excitement and one of the best performances by a band I have ever seen. Although the show was about her Nue album she also combined it with songs from her Pure album. This is what made this show a winner.

J'y Crois Encore (English: I Believe It Again). On her album A Wonderful Life, Lara wrote an English version of this song entitled: Ive Cried Enough. Lara is an amazing songwriter. When you compare the lyrics of the French version to the English version, you will see that the content of both songs are identical even if the lyrics are not a liter al translation of each other. The song speaks of pain and despair and dealing with it through faith and endurance. The song brings you to the realization that you cannot change what happened in the past. Lara sums it up beautifully in the English version of the song when she sings: Though I believe in the future, I keep in mind all the past, now that I live in the present I dont care about the rest

Aimer Deja (English: To Love Before). Lara loves to write about love. She has the ability to emote love so beautifully through her lyrics and choice of melodies. This song has so many themes, it speaks of love, betrayal and escaping from your pain to places where only you can find peace and calmness. The image of peace and calmness are beautifully done through Laras choice of melody, one that has a very calming and soothing tone to it.

S'en Aller (English: To Go Away). This song is packed with captivating contrasts. I think you can have several interpretations about th is song, but one interpretation that kept coming to mind was one of taking your own life into perspective by removing yourself from your current circumstances (to go away) and returning to make a fresh new start. In Laras own words: And to go away, as one returns.

Silence (English: Silence). An English version of Silence is also featured on Laras A Wonderful Life album. Like most of Laras English translations from her French albums, you will find that the English and French version of Silence is very similar to each other in terms of lyrical content. The meaning of Silence is straightforward. Silence is your best friend in tough situations where it is better to keep your mouth shut. But it also refers to the moments of silence where you are not distracted by the noise of the world. In the heat of the moment it is always easier to make decisions when there is silence.

Parce Que Tu Pars (English: Because You Leave). There is so much passion in this song that you ge t goose bumps when you listen to Lara singing it. It speaks of being left alone, solitude causing you to fade away. No one wants to be lonely. The song speaks of someone looking for a saviour to break the chains of loneliness.

Je Suis Mon Coeur (English: I Am My Heart). Although Lara did not write this song, she must have identified something in it that she wanted to add to this album. Lara never includes a song in an album just for the sake of the song. The song speaks of fear of rejection from a loved one, the longing of the heart that brings pain when you cannot fulfil that need. It also speaks of the fear of loosing the happiness you are experiencing, the uncertainty of the future and never knowing when it will be taken away from you. All this fits in with the title of the album. Being naked means you are exposed, stripped from all your securities and protection, which explains the fear illustrated in this song.

Tango (English: Tango). Lara uses a Tango dance r and a matador as a lovely metaphor for lovers who cant find each other, the one lover rejecting the other. Belonging to the matador is the challenge like the bull challenges the matador. The dancer dancing towards the matador, but the matador rejects her love by fighting back like fighting a bull. It is a beautiful image supported by a lovely and captivating melody. It is simply a joy to listen to and even better to see Lara perform it on stage.

Imagine (English: Imagine). Lara seems to have a soft spot for tribal music. She whispers the song, with tribal drumbeats and bagpipes as the backdrop. Lara plays with your imagination while singing the song, creating a picture of a paradise of simplicity, peace, honesty, joy and everything that is good. She paints such a pure picture in your mind that you realise it is completely unreal and impossible in our present world.

Tu Es Mon Autre (English: You Are My Other). A wonderful duet with Maurane. The duet supports the theme of the song and I think it will never have the same effect if it sung in solo. The song speaks of two persons so closely connected to each other that they are inseparable. You can interpret it as two close friends, two close family members or two lovers very close to each other. The image of two interconnected persons is strongly portrayed though the last line of the song: And if the one of us two fell. Closing the song with this rhetorical statement emphasises how close the two persons really are.

Rio (English: Rio). Playing games with your imagination. Lara paints the picturesque landscapes of Rio with this song. You simply lie back, close your eyes and listen closely to the lyrics (if you understand French) and experience the atmosphere Lara creates through this song. Laras performance of this song during the Nue concert is simply amazing. But even if you dont understand the words you still enjoy the vibrant music, the joyful melody and most importantly Laras beautiful voice.

Bambina (English: Little Baby). Lara co-wrote this song with Janey Clewer. Im not sure what motivated Lara to write this song, but I guess it is her motherly instinct that inspired her. The song can be interpreted in two ways, a mother that lost her baby or a mother of a full-grown child thinking back to the days when her child was a little one. This is one of those songs that easily bring a lump in the throat.

Immortelle (English: Immortal). This song is a masterpiece in every aspect. The lyrics, the voice of the artist, the music of the orchestra, everything is perfect. Again Lara makes use of a contrast to emphasise an idea. She describes herself as immortal but she dies from her lover, her lover makes her mortal. The song speaks of a person being strong and indestructible to ever yone but totally vulnerable to someone special, that one person who is able to break through all his/her defences and reaches the deep chambers of his/her heart. I like the way Lara writes her songs in such a universal way that you can interpret it in several ways. The fact that someone can break through your defences can be good and bad. It is good when the person is reaching out to you, but bad when someone uses it to their advantage.

Le Roi Est Une Femme (English: The King Is A Woman). I believe Laras motivation for including this song, another one not written by her, is her mother. I believe she dedicated the song to her mother because of the references to Sicile in the song. But you can also see it as Lara making a tongue in the cheek statement here in an industry mainly dominated by men. She showed everyone with this album that she can also make a success of the music she produces, not because she is a woman, but because she is an exceptional talented artist.

Lara co-wrote most of the songs of this album with Rick Allison who also contributed very much to this album. Lara and Rick did an extremely good job with this album and in my opinion they made a killer of a team when they produced music together. The album is concluded with a piano medley of all the songs on the album. To me the choice of adding a piano medley at the end was a perfect one. I could not have chosen a better way to conclude such a rich and invigorating album.

Special Thanks: David Rind of the LFIAG forum, for the English translations of Lara's songs.

Piano Music for Kids that Will Help You Rediscover the Child in You

John Paul Walters is a wonderful pianist and composer of childrens music CDs that adults really enjoy listening to with their kids. His heArtwarming, lyrics and lyrical arrangements of old tunes bring back warm memories of childhood that help parents make new memories for their own children.

So much creative energy is lost when we give up our spirit of childhood and choose to look at the world only through the safety goggles of emotional detachment. Make your home a safe place for everyone who dwells there by being emotionally available to your family, and it will be a creative resource for all.

John Paul Walters models the creativity possible when the sacred spirit of childhood is preserved and protected. One of my favorite tunes on his album, Rediscovering the Child in You, is Puff the Magic Dr agon.

I remember one evening when my husband and I snuggled my youngest son on the living room sofa, while singing him this beautiful song about childhood. Our ten-year-old boy was so moved by its words, and his own realization of growing up, that he began to cry as my husband and I were singing to him. We assured our young son that he would always be our little boy, and that no matter how old he grows we will never forget the special little boy that grew into a man.

We just celebrated his 18th birthday. We are so proud of him - and of that little boy! We chose a special birthday card to remind him who he is - the little boy of yesterday, the young man of today, and the wise man of the future.

Take some time today to preserve a special place for the creative spirit of childhood to dwell in your family, and when youre all older - youll remember it!

Learn To Play Guitar Sheet Music Part 1

Why is it so hard for many Guitarists to read sheet music on the Guitar?

Probably the answer is easy. They haven't done anything about it. An old used tyre can stand leaned against the wall of a car garage for thousands of years. Why? Nobody has thought about moving it. Could it be that easy also with playing Guitar sheet music? I think so. Sometimes we consider ourselves poor sight readers or not able to read Guitar sheet music at all and we think this is part of our personality. Every person who wants to learn to read Guitar sheet music notation properly has already taken the first step towards changing that condition, just like you have done by reading this article.

Climbing the Reading Guitar Sheet Music mountain starts with step one

Surprised? Well, I have been teaching Guitar playing for many years and I have found that learning to play Guitar is like many other activities. People, not you of course, often want to start from another position than from where they are. I would like to suggest that we approach the sight reading assignment from two directions. First by learning to find our way around the Guitar and learning the notes on the fingerboard.

Make a string safari on your Guitar

With the conven tional tuning on your Guitar you will have the note E on the first open string. I guess you are aware of the fact that you can find the same note on the second string too. If you dont know on what fret you will find it you can listen your way through the frets on the second string until youll find the note that sounds the same as the first string. Now I will be frank and tell you that E on the second string is on the fifth fret. Maybe you have already found that out. E on the third string is on the ninth fret. Practice to play E on these different places and jump back and forth until you can find the frets without effort.

How to proceed learning the Guitar fretboard

In a similar way you can invent small exercises on you Guitar fretboard like playing all Es on all six strings until you can play them with ease or finding all Cs and play them consecutively like a picking exercise or as an exercise for your right hand fingers.

Knowing the notes on the Guitar fingerboard will be a great help for you, not only when playing Guitar sheet music but also when you are playing by ear or improvising a Guitar solo.

Two Easy Steps to Describing Your Band for Greater Web Traffic and More Fans Part Two

It continues to boggle my mind how many bands don't take the time to come up with a decent description of their music. It's extremely important, and when you're marketing yourself online, it's essential.

So grab some paper, we're gonna create two simple band descriptions that will help you earn you web traffic and help you with all aspects of your music promotion. Whether you're looking to promote your band to someone in an elevator, on the phone or submitting to a directory, these two descriptions will serve you well.

2. Your Band in 500 Characters Or Less I publish the Celtic MP3s Music Magazine, and I can't tell you how difficult it is sometimes to find out Exactly what bands are all about. I have to search through the site, read the biography, etc. That's fine, but I don't have the time. I'm a musician first and foremost. So it's always impresses me when I can go to a band's homepage and find out who they are in 500 characters or less.

If you can desc ribe your band in about five hundred characters you are a head above the rest. That's really all you need to describe your music, talk up your band, and offer a benefit for exploring the site further. Post that info on your homepage and not only does it make it easier for the media and fans to learn more about, but there are other music promotion advantages.

You see, many websites, like mine, use scripts like the one offered by Gossamer to easily compile links on their website. Gossamer Links gives you 500 characters to describe your music. You can copy and paste that info straight from your homepage.

Do you promote your music on webrings? Webring.org gives you room to describe your site in just 400 characters. A little trimming and you're ready to submit.

There are numerous opportunities for you to submit up to 500 character descriptions of your band. Yes, you could just submit an Elevator Description, but any good copywriters will tell you that more text is better.

You see, your job is to convince people visit your website. Then it's your website's job to sell them on your band. But the first step is to get them there. And short descriptions usually are not interesting enough to compel visitors to look further. Just visit the Best Band Music Award links. What use is it to put your band name with a description that says great music. So?! Who cares!?!

Piano Sheet Music

Piano sheet music is a printed musical notation for piano. Before phonograph and radio became popular, sheet music was used by musicians to make their compositions known to the people. Many of these were piano sheet music since piano was the most popular musical instrument back then.

In the late 19th century, piano sheet music became even more popular as parlor music became a massive trend in the US at the time. Parlor music was a kind of popular music that was performed in a parlor, a small room in a house where performers play a musical piece before an audience. Almost all middle-class homes during this period had parlors and a piano.

With the advent of the phonograph, radio and other modern devices that played recorded sound, the popularity of piano sheet music gradually faded.

Piano sheet music, however, is not totally out of the music scene. Song writers nowadays still publish piano sheet music on sheets of paper. With the availability of advanced co mputer technology, many kinds of piano sheet music are now offered in computer-readable formats. They can be easily purchased and downloaded over the Internet.

Common pieces are sold from $3 to $5, while a piano sheet music collection of most recent hits sells at around $10 to $25. Rare and old piano sheet music, usually of classical songs, are priced at about $50.

Free piano sheet music can also be downloaded from the Internet. They are mostly old musical pieces with an expired copyright, such as the compositions of famous musicians MozArt, Brahms and Beethoven.

If you don't find the sheet music of your choice online, especially if it is rare, you may look for it in music stores near you. Some websites also offer listings of music stores where you can find both the most popular and hard-to-find sheet music, old and new alike.

James Blunt Britain's Newest Important Brings Talent Back to the U.S. Music Scene

Like much of the country I am sick of todays media driven, image based, digitized and synthetically enhanced Music. The so called artists who are studio packaged to marketing analyzed perfection complete with the synergistic packaging of cross promotional, cross sales compatibility. Reality television programs, perfumes, clothing lines, books, posters, and beauty products have overtaken and outweighed the importance of sound and soul. What is left is a sadly small handful of true talent, their existence almost an anomaly, a mere death rattle of the now mythical days when Music meant something and talent was a factor.

Due to this d own spiraling trend, I have ceased listening to the radio and stuck to exploring indie labels and lesser known bands through the internet and friends recommendations. Last week when a friend invited me to go with them to see Britains newest import, James Blunt, I arrived at Bowery Ballroom with little to no expectations except to hit up the bar.

With jack and coke in hand, I watched as Blunt took the stage. Young, attractive with piercing blue eyes and unshaven face, downplayed style with a green t-shirt and sneakers, I figured that the view would keep me entertained even if the Music didnt. From the first song, I was transfixed. The sound was affected, high yet masculine, tender with an undeniable strength of both voice and meaning. His ballad like lyrics, a mix of poetic waxings on dawns and beau ty, managed to avoid clich and instead invoke personal sensitivities with poignant delicacy. They resonated.

The entire concert maintained an awe I have not felt for a long time. The sight of true talent, raw and emotive, is such a rarity that it leaves the listener almost breathless. His piano playing paired to stunning perfection with his vocal falsetto during No Bravery, written in 1999 when he served as a soldier in Kosovo, almost produced a tear. The tucking of his guitar to the side during many of his songs came off as unrehearsed and a natural extension as he stood exposed, his voice raw and high with emotion. I bought the album the next day and have had it running on replay for two weeks now with no sign of getting sick of it.

In the U.K. Blunts debut Back to Bedlam has overtaken Coldplay selling 1.53 million albums and held the position of number one with the single Beautiful,: for several weeks. This is the first song that has been released in the U.S. and has deservedly won him an instant fan base. Songs such as Wise Man, So Long Jimmy, and Cry, are sure guarantees to keep him in the hearts of millions of adolescent girls and heartbroken lovers. I have personally experienced the spontaneous playing of the mental montage of ex-boyfriends while listening to Goodbye My Lover, and I am self-proclaimed die hard romantic cynic. My only complaint is the repeated reference to Dorian Gray in the chorus of Tears and Rain, which comes off as a strained attempt at literary intellectualism but manages only to conjure up a bad memory of the recent film League of Extraordinary Gentleman.

Blunts album was produced in L.A. by Tom Rothock and he is managed by the same person as Elton John which gives me a hope filled with a sincerity so lacking in the majority of todays Music, that Blunt is able to maintain his genuineness and remain centered now that he has crossed continental borders.

Musical Guide Review Of Showboat

In this article we're going to cover one of the oldest and longest running Musicals in history, the one and only Showboat.

Showboat first came to the stage in 1927, almost 80 years ago as of this writing. It was actually quite ahead of its time in many respects. For one thing, it featured African American performers in predominant roles. It also included as part of the story a mixed marriage, which in those days was unheard of. Yes, Showboat was certainly ground breaking.

There were actually several stories going on at the same time in the musical, very similar to one of today's soap operas. There was, of course, the actual operation of the Showboat itself and the struggles it faced along the way. There was the story of the mixed race couple and the odds that they had to fight agains t. There was the daughter of the showboat owner who wanted a career but also wanted to find true love. Instead she meets a man who betrays her and runs off leaving her with a baby to take care of all by herself. The sub stories go on and on.

As tragic as the stories in showboat were, that's how beautiful the music was. Some of the greatest songs of all time could be heard in this production. The list of great songs is pretty long but there are a few highlights.

For starters the is the great duet between the daughter and her soon to be snake of a husband. The song of course is Make Believe. This song pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the play, which has had so many renditions that it's hard to pick out which pair was best. More on the various versions of this play later.

Then of course there is Can't Help Lovin Dat Man which was sung by the highly visible African American couple. This is the kind of song that just makes one smile from ear to ear. In spite of the fact that her husband is a lazy so and so and pretty much drives her crazy, she just can't help but love him.

But of course the highlight of the play, and probably one of the greatest songs of all time, is Ol' Man River which is sung by the black man of the couple. This song so perfectly depicts the struggles of the black man in society and the hard life that he leads.

There are many debates as to who was the best singer of this song, whether it was Paul Robeson or William Warfield, which brings us to the number of renditions of this play.

While it first came into existence in 1927, written by Jerome Kern, it was later made into not one but three screen adaptations in 1929, 1936 and finally in 1951. Many critics feel that the 1951 adaptation with Howard Keel, Ava Garner, Kathryn Grayson and William Warfield was the greatest one of all.

Regardless of which one you may personally prefer, Showboat was without a doubt one of the mo st heartbreaking and musically beautiful creations of all time. Whatever version you decide to see, at least see one of them. You won't ever forget this one.

Musical Instruments for your Children

Music is the essence of life and I think that no one is untouched with this beautiful gift given to mankind. Even children also love to play music and enjoy it when they get a chance to do so. For this, you require various expensive musical instruments but what if you make your own music instruments at your home with little efforts? It is a fun and inexpensive idea to make Gongs, xylophones, hummers and triangles for children to play.

1. To make a Gong you need an old pie tin or a lid of a large metal popcorn tin, a metal table knife or spoon for a mallet, a hammer and nail, a string. You have to pound two nail holes on the edge of the pie tin or on the side of the popcorn lid two or three inches apArt. Thread the string through the holes and tie a knot. The string should be about 1 to 2 feet long enou gh so that you can easily hold it without touching the pan or tin. Hit the pan with the spoon or knife and you have a loud sound. To soften the sound, you need to wrap the knife or spoon with a piece of cloth and then use a child socks to cover the knife or spoon.

2. To make a Xylophone you require glass pop bottles of same size and then shape work best for a homemade xylophone and for this purpose, water glasses shall also work. Fill the glasses with different amount of water whereby one bottle should be almost filled to the top and the other one with very little water. The other bottles should vary somewhere in between the two. You can use as many or less bottles as you like. A knife or spoon would wok well as a mallet. Hit the side of the bottle or glass gently as each one shall make a different sound. You can even experiment with different levels of water to decide which note pitch you would like most. If you have a piano or other musical instrument that shall ma ke various pitches then you can tune your bottles or glasses to the instrument.

3. Making a hummer is also very easy where you need to have an empty cardboard toilet paper or paper towel tube, a rubber band and a wax paper. Cut a round piece of wax paper that is larger than the ends of the tube. Cover one end with the wax paper and hold in place with the rubber band and make sounds into the opposite end of the tube.

4. You can also make a triangle with the help of a horseshoe or 4 to 8 inches of metal pipe, string and a knife or spoon. Loop the string at the curve of the horse shoe or thread it through the pipe. Tie a knot at the top and hit the horse shoe or pipe with the knife as soon as it dangles from the sting. Make sure that the string is strong enough to hold the pipe.

Me and My Gang by Rascal Flatts CD Review

Rascal Flatts, the current reigning Kings of Country have released their fourth CD entitled Me and My Gang.

Rascal fans will find that the band is indeed maturing and to my ear Musically this is their best release to date. Consisting of mostly slower tempo songs, all of which have a moral message to them Rascal Flatts has clearly found their audience on the female side of the ledger.

That said the CD launches with a great track, Stand, and rolls very smoothly right through the full 13 tracks in the collection.

I especially enjoyed their treatment of track 3, Backwards. It's like a Musical comedy. Very funny!

Overall I found Me and My Gang a real pleasure to listen to. I like it's smoothness a lot and it certainly does not lack at all in production value. I give it two thumbs up.

The standout tunes on Me and My Gang are Backwards [track 3, Yes I Do [track 7, and Cool Thing [track 11. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in Stuck On REpeat is track 2, What Hurts The Most. Very nice!

Songs About Me by Trace Adkins CD Review

Country music sensation Trace Adkins has released his latest CD entitled Songs About Me.

One song makes this CD well worth the listen, Honky Tonk Badonkadonk. Awesome baby!

Now, I'm not a huge country music fan, in fact it's more like I just like to explore any and all genres of music and whatever I find that I like, I like. Regardless of genre. I stumbled across Honky Tonk Badonkadonk on somewhat of a lark and just had to check out the entire CD. Wow, am I ever glad I did.

The CD launches with the title track, Songs About Me on which the silky smooth voiced Adkins basically tells his life story. Which by the way is I think what makes him work so well with country music fans. He's a guy who has lived the music he sings. That never hurts.

Anyway, Songs About Me is a collection of tracks that has just the right mix of everything as far as I'm concerned. Up tempo, down tempo, and songs that take you deep like track 2, Arlington. Reminding us that at th e end of the day we're all more alike than we are different.

These days it's a very rare CD on which every single song is easy to listen to. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs. Not even one of them will make you anxious to get on to the next one.

Overall it's an outstanding release. What I call, must have music. I give it two thumbs up. Even though Songs About Me is very decidedly country, this is an album any music fan can enjoy. I sure do.

The standout tunes are Songs About Me are [track 1, Arlington [track 2, and I Learned How To Love From You [track 10. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in Stuck On REpeat is track 11, Honky Tonk Badonkadonk. Lovin It!

Release Notes:

Trace Adkins originally released Songs About Me on March 22, 2005 on the Liberty record label.

CD track list follows:

1. Songs About Me
2. Arlington
3. Find Me A Preacher
4. My Way Back
5. I Wish It Was You
6. Bring It On
7. My Heaven
8. Baby I'm Home

Legal Music Downloads

Let's face it, the majority of today's youth over the age of 12 know how to manipulate a computer better than their parents. They are also much more knowledgeable in technology in general; be it the latest cell phone or the newest mp3 player out in the stores. What is mp3 ? That is a question you will hear most often from parents when talking about the subject. They may have heard of the ever-popular iPod, but do they even know what it looks like ?

It is estimated that by 2010 there will be approximately 300 million mp3 players in circulation. That is astronomical ! Mp3 is basically a musical format which is compressed whilst retaining the quality of the sound. It isn't the only format in existence, but is the most recognized. You also have WMA (Windows Media Audio - used by Windows Media Player), AAC (encoding technique employed by Apple), ATRAC (used by Sony), and a few others. Some mp3 players will not play WMA files, for example. There are ways of getting around this but it usually involves some illegal manipulation of the music files. WMA files can only be played and copied for a limited number of times.

With internal capacities of up to 60 gigabytes (approximately 30,000 songs), today's digital music players are in hot demand. Almost every teenager has one. People are willing to spend over $400 to get their hands on the latest gadgets capable of storing an unprecedented number of songs (and other media files such as videos and pictures). How do you transfer this media onto your newly-acquired mp3 player ? Scores of people are still downloading music illegally on the internet, infringing copyright laws. Others download their music legally.

Apple has its popular online music store, iTunes. Sony recently launched Connect, and Real has Rhapsody. All these are legal music downloading services with a low monthly service charge, with a small additional charge for downloading a song. The cost varies between 79 and 99 per song.

With Rhapsody, for example, one has the possibility of browsing their entire catalog of over 2 million songs and creating a personalized playlist. You can listen to the songs as many times as you wish.

Using the legal music downloading services such as the aforementioned ones is a far better option for you the consumer, and your PC ! The RIAA is actively pursuing file-sharers (illegal music downloads) and serving them with lawsuits. Just like the AIDS virus, the RIAA doesn't discriminate. They once sued a 12-year old girl for sharing copyrighted music online. Nobody is immune.

Another downside to downloading music illegally is that you are also downloading hundreds of viruses that can cripple your PC. They hide themselves within the music files and then attack your browser or registry.

You are better off paying less than $15 per month and download your music legally, than have to bear the embarrassment of a lawsuit, or having to purchase a new comput er because a bunch of viruses have rendered it useless.

Reflections

Some could argue that the downfall of John Lennon came when he met Yoko Ono. After the releases of Two Virgins and Life With Lions, the somewhat controversial and humour enticing Albums, (both within a year of each other), the future career of Lennon seemed lacking in all the speciality of The Beatles. Even Lennon was seen to be doubtful in his departure from the band. He married Yoko on the 20th of March 1969 which was then followed by the infamous 8 day peace protest in bed as their honeymoon. The Plastic Ono Band Album was released almost immediately after The Beatles split officially in May 1970, yet the final Let It Be, The Beatles swansong wasnt released until after this date.

Moving to New York in September 1971, he released the Album, Imagine only a month later after his departure from England. It wasnt long until immigration almost successfully got him packing his bags and heading home. Splitting from Yoko for about a year later, he went out on several heavy drinking sessions with old friend and known alcoholic, Harry Nilsoon. Together they recorded the Album, Pussy Cats, sadly I cant find a listing for this anywhere as a chart entry here or over there. Eventually allowed his green card after Sean was born, he retreated from the Music industry to be alone with his new family. Putting the lid down on his piano and closing the guitar case, he seemed to have found his perfect home. On the brink of a come back with the signing of a Music contract, the future seemed bright for the Lennon family until the fatal meeting with Mark Chapman where he shot Lennon out side his home on the 8th of December 1980.

We take a look at one of the compilations that has graced our record shops since his death. It would appear that on every anniversary of birth or death, an Album has followed featuring his best known Music from his solo career. This is one of them

Imagine theres no Heaven, its easy if you try.. First released i n November 1975, it went straight to number one. Again issued in December 1988 and then again in December 1999, in total, it sold over a million copies, but still, the simplicity of this track was always destined to be one of the great anthems in human history whether he was still with us or not. The hands make very little movement across the keys and with a video piece in just the same vein, they are as uniquely powerful as each other. The essentialism is within the opening piano chords. Lennon was not the greatest singer, in fact, straining his poor voice in early Beatle recordings was not unusual. (The song, Twist And Shout, always had to be left until the end of a show due to the anxiety it would have on his vocal chords.) He was primarily a poet, a collector or words, creating images for the heart and for the soul of his listeners. As Dylan as his constant Musical guide in his head, Lennon was, it could be said, imitating the Legendary folk singer, but naturally what shone through and essentially what we connected to was the person who enlightened us from within John. Love or loathe The Beatles, one cane listen to Imagine and feel something. Whether it is thoughts for our own families and children or the world as a whole, this song is very much affective and will remain so for generations to come. The tragedy of this heart dominating piece of humanitarism, is that the song is forever remembered, but the words have long been forgotten

Instant Karma is the second track on this compilation Album. It has to be said that one is struck by the extent of the love that John shared with Yoko, not just for each other but for their dedication to the projects that they had together. Flicking through the sleeve, we notice that the simple black and white photography is relaxed and we feel welcomed into their world. The twenty tracks are performed by John but mostly by The Plastic Ono Band which on many occasions incorporated some well respected Musicians including Klaus Voorman (the German friend from the days of Hamburg who designed the Revolver Album for The Beatles) and Eric Clapton. One is also struck by not just the political strengths of this man but his diversity within his Music. We shift from grief stricken soul to folk, pop and rock and roll, Lennons first being the latter. It was released February 1970, reaching number 5.

This track, I wonder is probably more autobiographical than a political statement. The extent of this track Musically throws out to its audience the same crowd-filling-a -room feeling as Give Peace A Chance. A lot of hand clapping and a cast of thousands fill our ears. These tracks are primitive in their recordings in following the Ono/Lennon theme of Musicians jamming a song rather than playing it in a studio situation. A mumbled counting in at the intro gives the full feeling of a song almost made up as they went along. I felt, lyrically, it was a personal dig at his shallowed emotion from being the star of The Beatles. One gets the impression that Lennon, after leaving the band, spent the rest of his life reflecting and analysing his former existence.

Mother, is very definitely a self therapy track that was actually spawned by some sessions with a certain Dr Janov. It is crucially a very personal track and once the words have been digested by the listener, it feels as thought we are encroaching on something so intensely intimate that its is like extreme intrusion. The opening line may bring a lump to the throat; ..mother, you had me, but I never had you I wanted you but you didnt want me is an incredibly disturbing statement for a child to make to its mother. Another line isfather you left me, but I never left you If we knew a small fraction of Lennons u pbringing, we would know that he was abandoned by his father, whom in twenty years of Johns life, he only saw him twice. Also brought up by his mothers sister, Mimi, so with this information in hand, it is a painful ballad about ones parents to bear, even from the voice of a grown man. Released in December 1970, it failed to enter a chart.

Another self analysis mark of Lennons life is portrayed in the beautifully gentle, Jealous Guy. Whilst hitting the bottle in a suicidal fashion at the temporary break from Ono, this simply tuned song offers a touching and affectionate plea for his lost one. For a man to open up his inner most feelings surely is a mark of dignity and strength. We see the sensitive side of Lennon, a side not seen whilst a foul mouthed, bad tempered Beatle. In this violin complemented ballad, we can surely be thankful for the presence of Yoko in his life. If not, he would never have penned such poetry. Released in November 1985, but failed to ge t any higher than number 65..

Power to The People, is back to the chanting, peace seeking days of the strong Lennon/Ono union. Again, a marching demonstration song easily shouted from the roof tops in great chorus. Yet with its anti war themes of such poignancy, I can only think of Citizen Smith shouting from outside Tooting tube stationUnlike Smith, Lennon found himself on many occasions being labelled as part of Americas radical left. Released as a single in March 1971, it managed a fairly decent number 7.

Cold Turkey, may have had all the signs of a drug addiction track but it was actually directed at the governments from both side of the pond. At the release of this track, it was at the same time as Lennon handing back his M.B.E to the Queen. Naturally, the timing for Lennon was appalling and the single flopped. A fairly mediocre rock track by Johns standards, it does not help with the cries and wails of his voice towards the end. Deeply analytical an d self opposed, it denotes a less than happy time in his life. Released in November 1969, it reached a weak number 14, despite its surrounding situations.

Love, is again a personal reflection on the love in his life and the love lost from his parents. He describes love is wanting o be loved.. I feel with these tracks that it is Lennons attempt to quite openly bare his soul. We, the majority, only accept the Musical quality of the sturdy piano and ever so soft acoustic guitar. Perhaps it is because we dont know how to deal with someone elses instantly personal feelings Released November 1982, it reached only number 41.

Mind Games, is a whining track that may get on ones nerves after too many listens. I do believe that John took his Music too far sometimes in the respect of his introverted perspective view on the world. Being so disillusioned with the leading heads of state from both sides, he became withdrawn in his ideas, far beyond anyones comprehension, these were strange, avant garde pieces for his own personal benefit. Lennon totally looses himself in the immensely droning and brain washing theme of this song. I do believe he forgets, that there are people, in the future, out there who will be listening to thisA fairly awful song, it was surprisingly released as a single in November 1973 and got an average number 26.

Whatever Gets You Through The Night, is a jolly, happy clappy song that takes on a sudden change of theme from the rest of the Album. It says, hey, forget everything I just said, its okay, whatever you fancy, gets you going, floats your boat, just do it.. Gone briefly are the overly emotional, 3-in-the-morning analysis of the plight of the world. We are awoken to this disco/party track to jump up and down and forget about lifes troubles.. Im all for that Released in October 1974, only to struggle to number 36.

#9 Dream is what the title suggests. A dream state created by the distorted, drif ting vocals of Lennon with slight Sgt. Pepper instruments. Floating violins, whispers and taps on tambourines have us swimming down a slow moving stream in the afternoon sun. Again, a track that probably held a deeper meaning for Lennon and Ono rather than the listener, who thought, hey, this is cool.. Its tracks like these that were wasted on us public.. Released in February 1975, it managed number 23.

Stand By Me.. id the only track on this extensive Album that is not written by Lennon. A classic track written for Ben. E. King by the ever Legendary songwriters, King, Leiber and Stoller; the men who were responsible for some of the greatest rock and roll songs ever recorded. Lennons love for rock and roll was widely known. He later blamed Elvis for seducing him into creating his own band.. Th is was not a well liked cover but it still stands well with Lennons own backing track and vocal range. Although not his song, he had the ability to take such a song and create it as his own. Adding a croaky vocal and heavier guitars allowed him to do this.. Released May 1975, it failed to get any higher than number 30.

(Just Like) Starting Over was the ironic record which shot to number one a month after his death in 1980. A quivering rock and roll moment and somewhat retro aiming at the Teddy Bear re run moving through the younger set of the day. Its popularity stemmed from Lennons untimely death. The starting over theme personally related to his life re born with Yoko and Sean, their son. It was some what a macabre anthem in the feeling of life after death and the strengths his record selling abilities after his passing.

Woman, finds us soothing over with the gentleness and humbly inspiring themes of his obvious relationship with Yoko and some may say, th e respect he had for his mother whom he had loved with equal tenderness. It is a sensitive tribute to any woman from a man feeling failed in his adoration for her. An emotional piece with just as much feeling Musically as in the lyrics Released January 1981, shot to number one.

Beautiful Boy, has the same tenderness as the previous track but now, more focused on the birth of Sean. Much a piece picked on by the media, they highlighted the pushed-aside Julian who had been almost rejected in his earlier life by his father, Lennon, and had been the subject of Hey Jude, by McCartney. This had been written several years before as an arm around the shoulder comforter to Julian after the break up of Lennons first marriage to his mother, Sylvia. Beautiful Boy, features the lyric, life is what happens to you while you busy making other plans.. A sweet song completed with the tinkling tune denoting a childrens Music box in this swaying nursery lullaby. Never released as a single.

Watching The Wheels, follows and the nest four tracks take the tempo up a little. This song is particular lifting Musically, but yet, still very middle of the road by today standards. Even though the subject remains with its element of struggle in life and the man coming to terms with his own complicated mind, his mood seems more optimistic and on an even keel. His mood always was heavily reflected in his Music. Like many of us waking up knowing were going to have a bad day, I guess Lennon felt much the same thing Musically Released April 1981, reaching number 30.

Nobody Told Me, is one of my favourite Lennon tracks from his solo career. Yet again, it is a stab at the human race but somehow tongue n cheek. A song for a day that isnt going so well, a song that I have in my head most days! There is a great deal of electric guitar playing a looped riff on a melodic theme and percussion that lifts the track to a foot tapping, skipping down the road effect from a happier Lennon. Released January 1984, to a fairly impressive number 6.

Borrowed Time, is a little on the new wave, Ziggy theme with its abstract Level 42 riff and its fading in and out lyrics. I wonder if this may have been the way forward for him, if he had still been alive. Its fundamental basis is a calypso style for a summers day on a Jamaican beach. Lennon delights us in his won vocal percussion. An unusual turn for the rock and roll head strong artist and a refreshing approach for the listener. It prides us into an understanding that Lennon could lift our spirits with open and future forward thinking themes as well as the gut wrenching ballads that have us reaching for razor blades. Lennon enjoyed all Music and could adjust his uniqueness to even such foreign and unravelled paths of sounds such as calypso I just wish I could roll my Rs like he could Released March 1984, only to number 32.

Working Class Hero, will have us throwing away our bongos and reaching for that bathroom cabinet door. This was the titled that labelled Lennon from his death and beyond. In this track, he reaches out to another hero of his, Bob Dylan. With acoustic guitar and minus a harmonica, he extends his talents to hard minded folk Music. He falls to the very depths of personal humanity lyrically and the very struggle faced by millions just to go and earn a crust. A cold, truthful legacy to the working class, which is all of usIt was the B side to Imagine in 1975.

Happy Xmas (War Is Over,) was admittedly, his greatest anti war, anti government chant which only became famously known after his death. Unfortunately, it took seven shots in his chest to make us sit up and listen. The one disadvantage of this track is that we can hear Yoko singing, of course, she couldnt sing a note, so for this, it is amusing. The other down side is a personal one and it reminds me of Christmases of years ago with the family. With all the spangle and droopy tinsel of all that is festive, it will always be tinged with the tragedy of Lennons death. It is a song that will may the listener feel humble and sorrowful for perhaps not appreciating the man when he was still alive. On any account, I do find this song very depressing. Released in December 1972 to number 2 then again in December 2003 but only reaching number 33.

Our last track is Give Peace A Chance and we have gone full circle in his career within this Album. Released as a single in July 1969 and recorded at the famous bed in with all sorts of hangers on, Musicians, drop outs, press and intellectuals, one can almost smell the mustiness of the unwashed bedclothes and the sweatiness of the enormous crowd huddled into the small hotel room. Don a bed sheet and a guitar and invite a few hundred of your closest acquaintances round for a chanting session. Youll find this track enlightening, spirit lifting, soul soaring and it will make you want t o sway with arms and legs and sing to the top of your voice. The words are simple and effortless and very much Lennons finest moment. In my mind, he could have started and finished his career with the very release of this record and this one only. The rest of the songs could all have been recorded but perhaps left to one side for his own personal therapy and reflection. I believe the real tragedy was not the fatal introduction of Mark Chapman, but his career, his Music and his thoughtful words, wasted on the shallow human race

Violent and troubled in his youth, he found self assurance and peace in age. His power was sometimes immeasurable. During the 8 day bed in, he and Ono had boards erected across the world in 12 cities campaigning against the Vietnam war.

On the 28th of November 1974, he made his final public appearance in concert at Madison Square Garden.

All songs written by John Lennon (except Stand By Me by Leiber/Stoller/King. EMI Records Ab bey Road. Bought in HMV for nine pounds.

Punk as a Rebellion

Punk is the mixture of the American avant-garde and the British roots that boomed in the 1970s. This subculture is very contradicting and hard to define. Punk rock opposes to anything that Art rock represents. Punk is a chaos. The chaos becomes evident in everything that punks have to do with- in their clothing style, in their behaviors, in the aggressive attitudes. Punk is the culture that is against the social imprisonment of certain people. Punk is a rebellion against dullness.

Fashion in the mid to late '70's took a dramatic plunge from the glamour rock era (late 60's - early 70's). From suits and gowns to torn jeans and shirts, and marvellous make-up to tattoos and safety pin body piercings. Punks' weren't the most pleasingly aesthetic group to socialise with! Along with their ragged dress style, pun ks' flaunted their behaviour to go with their shocking visual appearance. Parents considered punks' to be an undesirable influence on their children due to the latent violence, explicit music, sexual attitudes, drug habits and the way punks' presented themselves both visually and musically.

Musically punks' were very inexperienced. Punks had a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) attitude which basically encouraged the youth to stArt a band even if they couldn't play their instruments. Most band members had only been playing their instruments for a few months before they stArted. Punk rock brought rock 'n' roll back to its bare essentials; four chord songs but strummed a lot faster to create a chainsaw buzz. This buzz created a head nodding action in both the crowd and the band members, sometimes around 240 times a minute. Nearly all concerts were drug fuelled and bands presented loud chaotic performances. The majority of punk songs were about the way the youth felt about their political stance in society. This resulted in indecipherable and non-intelligent lyrics.

Where does punk fit in? Basically the New York Dolls created 'Punk Rock' before there was a term for it. They set the scene and aesthetic for what eventually became known as 'punk'. The generation they influenced in New York and Londoncreated the terms Punk and Punk Rock. The first 'punk rock' band was The Ramones from New York. The Ramones created the musical ideas of 'punk'. They achieved this by speeding the tempo up significantly and breaking rock & roll down to its basic form - four chords; simple catchy melody and alluring inane lyrics. In Britain, the Sex P istols were the first and most influential punk band. Their immediate impact in 1976 directly inspired almost every punk band that stArted. The Sex Pistols formed the blueprint for British punk, using simple, raw, stripped-down guitar riffs. Their 'in your face', playful destructive exaggerated behaviour resulted in the band being physically attacked in the streets and the media portraying them as 'demons'. The Sex Pistols weren't the only key punk band in Britain. Incorporating early rock and reggae, the Clash became the most politically idealistic and musically eclectic group in punk.
